Anonymous Threatens Internet With "Operation Blackout"

Im not too bothered by this, even if they do manage to take down the root DNS servers, many of the websites we visit will still be visit-able. In fact if youve visited the site previously, its likely that your browser has stored that address and IP address in a cache, this to save having to constantly query DNS servers. If by chance you visit a website you have never been to before it is probably cached on your ISP's DNS servers, if not then you probably wont be able to view it.

Bottom line, dont panic it probably wont effect us too badly.

Not Anonymous.

Shutting down an entire form of infrastructure? Come on, they already stated they're not doing that after the NSA claimed they were going to bring down power grids. It's just an attempt to smear Anonymous, to give authorities a better excuse to hunt down the members of Anonymous (which of course is impossible considering the nature of Anonymous) and nothing else.

Or it could just be some wannabee idiot.

wintercoat:
Didn't this already get denied on Twitter and Facebook by Anonymous? Coulda sworn this first came out last month or so, and they already said it's just some fuckwit using the name Anonymous to get more attention.

Yeah, it did, and was originally put forward by the NSA, not anonymous, but I'm dying to see if someone does it anyway.

Bobic:
That's it, they have officially moved into the realms of internet terrorism. We don't like what a specific group is doing so we're going to attack everyone regardless of how related to the offending party they are or even if they are against them.

Of course, saying that would make them feel good, so I'll go back to referring to them as being on the same level as angsty teenagers breaking glass windows and tearing down posters thinking that makes them 'hardcore'.

100% this. If (and I doubt they will anyway) do this, it will just provide as much ammo as angry middle-aged politicians need to ensure that the internet turns into some police enforced hell-hole. They seem to forgot that if it was Al-Queda or Iran threatening to do this, people WOULD be calling it terrorism, yet they want us to label them as crusaders for internet freedom.

How is this going to get them support, and hurt the "bankers" (or whatever "evil" they claim to b after)? Oh, it's to demonstrate how the world would be without the internet? I thought we did that in a nice, free, legit way just a month ago?

It's quite sad really that it's probably not going to happen. The ruckus caused by HTTP being globally down - even for an hour or so - would be hilarious.

Captcha: "Mind the gap". I can swear it's getting sentient.

If it works they will only succeed in alienating any potential supporters.

Dumb idea.

TitanAura:
I am seriously doubting the authenticity of this threat. Seeing as how ANYONE can claim to be anonymous, it doesn't mean the entire collective is for shutting THEMSELVES down. Why in the hell would you attempt to shut down the collective's ability to communicate with one another? How would they know when Operation Blackout is over if there is no set date?

Not only that, but anonymous usually has a habit of claiming credit for an attack *after they've already done it.*

They can shut down HTTP internet. They'll still be able to use IRC to communicate

Na what actually happened was they announced they were going to do it, failed horribly, and so used the its some random fuckwit defense.

If they really want to hurt bankers that DEFINITELY shouldn't be doing this on a weekend. Bank's business would be most harmed during... well during banker's hours.

While I want to see if they could pull this off, I think that stopping the flow of information for those who just don't know as much about the internet as you is a gross misuse of that knowledge and completely goes against your own principles of free information (allowing only those who have the knowledge access it).

Anon, if you as a collective do this, you lose a lot of respect from me.

... Whatever, thanks for letting us know in advance I guess

Just get it out of your system, OK? I don't think that hitting everyone with a protest is a good idea but then again, Anonymous is one of those groups that tends to isolate itself and make decisions in a vacuum.

I know, its all very cool and cyberpunk, which is why i'm not that pissed off. In fact i kinda want to see if you can do it. But its only really going to hurt the average user, militaries will have IP backups and hard lines as will governments. And the average user will think you're attacking them. Its really fucking stupid.

March 31st...the day before April 1st? A day commonly know for jokes and hi-jinks?

Yeah, imma put my scepticism hat on here.

So just like they took down facebook? And created their own country? and ended the tyranny of high gas prices?
My reaction:

THE END IS NIGH!!! Quick everyone grab all the porn and ponies you can and meet me in the vault!

Also, im generally interested to see how DAR GERVAMENT respond to this if it actually works. Will they have a new found respect for creative people on the internet or will they just use it to launch a man hunt on a loosely tied group of people to boost their own numbers... don't answer that.

Seriously though the idea that this is so easily possible is worrying... can we back up the internet?

Honestly, I would rather give Anonymous guns and send them to do some real cleaning.

So their going to punish SOPA by shutting down the internet...

Right.

Excellent plan there./sarcasm.

And on a Saturday? Really. I have to work 7 1/2 hours ON THE SLOWEST DAY. Thanks. Jerks.

Richardplex:
Funny, I read something when SOPA was still kicking about about anonymous doing exactly this. And they didn't do it. So I'm calling BS on this.

I was just thinking "haven't i seen this already?

It was done before.
Some grad student want to see how wide spread his virus can be, though he meant no harm. However, there is a bug in his virus on how it reproduce, needless to say he cog up half of the internet servers(DNS).
I only remember his exploit buffer overflow on a function of the server called finger. Basically instead pass in an address he pass in a string of machine code, which overflow the program stack and overwrite the return address to his choosing.
It was pretty famous I'm sure someone know much more about this.

That IS an unbelievably good point... which leads me to believe this is just a joke, you know, for da lolz.

So basically, put Steam in offline mode when I go to bed tomorrow.

Captcha: tear us apart -- seems pretty fitting

I'M CUTTING DOWN THE INTERNETS!

Also this sounds like a random Anon trolling y'all.

A day before April 1st, huh? Interesting timing, there.

So apparently Anon subscribes to a Mutually Assured Destruction way of thinking about Free Speech.

I just hope this doesn't affect Steam or any of my precious online games D:

Oh well, better search something to do over the weekend, if that fails, I can set Steam to offline and play lots of Skyrim over the weekend.

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't think Anonymous are capable of taking down the internet the proper way the big league hackers could. So instead they're doing it a shitty way. If you going to commit a crime do it properly. I probably won't post here again because Anonymous are going to blow up my house, by hacking into the MoD.

doubtful. quantum computers are possible in theory too, no one has been able to make one thou.

Hey, we're talking about the same bunch of idiots that buy those Guy Fawkes masks off of Warner Brothers, and then wear them to protest against big movie corporations.

Not to mention that Guy Fawkes wasn't really a great role-model for Freedom!

Someone says they're Anonymous, then they're Anonymous. Doesn't work any other way.

Yeah, he should have said not AnonOps.
This is a small group that has no chance of success, most of AnonOps has been making fun of how stupid these people are for over a month now. Nothing is going to happen.

I just don't see how Anonymous can DDOS the servers that do DNS lookup for the entire internet...

It would just be like on days when the internet naturally gets more traffic.

does this mean i have to get my porn through IP addresses now? i don't know enough about this, but it sounds....complicated, but not impossible. it won't harm them, because they probably can communicate easily in other ways other HTTP usage, and i suppose i'll do other things during that time, like see my girl friend or play a game or watch a movie or something. if it works, sounds like a decent form of protest, i guess. who knows, might be interesting to see how things work out. might be funny to hear all the bitching when i go back to school of "omg, i couldn't even access my facebook, it was a total travesty!"

Realitycrash:

Implying that "nice, free, legit demonstrations" accomplish anything. Not that this stunt (assuming they pull it off) will do much more than inconvenience EVERYONE (yes even Big Business) for a moment...

I'll believe it when I see it...

Of course, they won't actually do it. Without the internet what would they do? They'd have to go outside or something! XD

Yeah, im going to be at a convention so I'm not gonna give a damn about this. but are they painting themselves as the villian instead of the vigilante heros. Lawmakers can use it as leverage against them to pass bills that we don't even want. thats in it seems a little hypocritical to limit the flow of information.
