Take the "Old School Gaming" Quiz!

Take the "Old School Gaming" Quiz!

How many of these classic gaming consoles and controllers can you identify?

Greetings game fans! Did you know that it's been just about 40 years since the first home gaming console hit the market way back in 1972? Our favorite hobby is getting up there in years, so to help teach everyone a little bit of gaming history, we've put together a little quiz on some of the most classic (and old school) gaming consoles out there.

Do you remember the Atari Jaguar? The Commodore 64? Or what about the Sega Dreamcast? Take the quiz and find out!

Take the quiz!

You'll have as long as you like to take the quiz, and can retake it until you get 100%. Just remember your cumulative time will affect your position on the leaderboard.

Blast. Only got a 60. I guess my 20 years gaming experience isn't quite enough. Oh well, I'll try harder next time.

Also, does the GameCube really count as "old school" gaming?

I think the quiz might be buggered somehow cause I keep on getting 90%

For some reason the Commodore 64 image isn't taking Commodore 64 as the answer.

50%. Pretty good considering I was guessing half the answers.

In hindsight those were probably the ones I got right. :P

I've looked into that and corrected the mix-up. Apologies!

It's all good =) Thanks. It is all correct now =)

Good quiz, I sort of randomly guessed the one with the 3DO pad, never seen one before.

Damn, overread the hint for the panasonic pad. 90% on my first try is quite nice, though.

never seen some of those despite gaming and PC obsessing since my dad bought our first computer in 1990. took 2 tries, never seen/heard/been aware of panasonic 3DO whatever it was.
Also gamecube and dreamcast aren't old school. heck one of my current generation consoles has hookups for gamecube.

A good quiz, though it made me feel old. Took me a while to remember the Mega Drive was called the Genesis in the US. Wouldn't consider the Dreamcast or Jaguar old school, but that shows my age. Was jealous of my mate who had the wood finish Atari 2600, I had the black plastic version. I want the next consoles to have wood or leather finishes, would make them less of an eye sore in the living room.

Easy Peasy. Should've clicked faster through it, though.

80% on my first try, not too bad.

Damn, misread the answers for the nes controller and clicked on snes just cause it was the first that said Nintendo. Should always fully read the question or else you only get 90%.

Commodore screen threw me for a while as I recognised the screen, but not the monitor and keyboard in the picture with it. You may want to blur the commodore in the actual screen text though....

Also the C64 question 'This console...' may want to change that....

Glad I had uncles obsessed with the C64. Hurrah 100%.

I had to take an educated guess on one based on the other options, but I got them all on the first try!

FYI the photo of the Commodore 64 boot screen had the words "COMMODORE 64" pretty easy to see despite the blurring. Not that I needed the help.

That black controller threw me off. I got 9/10 three times before I got the right one for it. The rest I knew.

But...

The Gamecube is not retro, I refuse to think of it as old school. >.<

It's my most modern console that I happen to own, it can't be retro yet.

I got a 100% on my first try.
That... greatly surprises me considering I was -4 years old when the NES came out.

I only know any of these because of the angry video game nerd.

Same here.

90% oh yeah. I'm lucky to be old enough to have played those things first hand. I remember breaking one of those switches off the Atari 2600.

How sad is it that the Gamecube made it into the list? Maybe not as sad as me getting a 60.
If it wasn't for the Wii, the Gamecube wouldn't be THAT old... >___>

MY kinda quiz right here!
I hit up the History of Video Gaming exhibit the weekend it opened at the Smithsonian. I was explaining to my gf (and surrounding crowd) how awesome Intellivision was and why there was a keypad on the controller... lol

100% on first try. Yes. I truly know all about games.

Ask me what the first ROM cartridge based console was! Or what Sgea's first console was!

Though I have to say, the quiz was pathetically easy for me. And I mean, come on! Dreamcast and Gamecube? I didn't know the 6th gen was retro? (Hint: It's not. Not yet.)

There was a Commodore 64 console released in 1990.

That's the wierdness of the Early Console Wars.

True, but the picture was of a Commodore 64 computer, with keyboard, etc, not the console. So the description was not accurate. Having the console in there would have been interesting for a difficulty point of view.

60 % but it was just luck... i didn't recognize most of em

100% on my first try, no struggle whatsoever. It was outrageously easy and I never even played half those machines before.

Beautiful End:

The Super NES was widely considered "old school" by the time its 10th birthday was celebrated in 2001.

The GameCube is now 11 years old.

100% on the first go.

Honestly, you should have thrown an actual Fairchild Channel F in there. They had 8-direction joysticks (up, down, left, right, twist clockwise, twist counterclockwise, push down, pull up).

And, of course, I recognized the 3DO controller immediately. Although you got the description a bit wrong. The machine was generically referred to as the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer. However, it was manufactured by Matsushita/Panasonic (model numbers FZ-1 and FZ-10), and LG/Goldstar (GDO-101M), each of whom did their own industrial design. The controller pictured was the Panasonic unit. Creative Labs also made a "3DO Blaster" as an ISA expansion card for the PC, but I don't think they ever sold very many.

Also, I object to the description of the Atari Jaguar as the world's first 64-bit system. I think they had one 64-bit data path in there, but the CPU was 32-bit, the memory address space was 32-bit... It was about as honest as claiming the 3DO could render 64 million pixels/second (it was really about 16 million).

I scored 100%, with 10 of 10 correct on The Escapist's The Old School Gaming Quiz!.
Take this quiz

Holy crap I got them all right on the first go! I guess the Angry Video Game Nerd shows on youtube helped me out with a couple of the old school models I wouldn't have known otherwise.
