E3: Play as Nathan Drake, Big Daddy in PlayStation All Stars

Sony drops details on some new characters and crossplay with the PS Vita in the Smash Bros. lookalike.

There's a lot of characters jam-packed into PlayStation All Stars. Jack Tretton, the CEO of Sony Worldwide, mentioned the awesome ad in which many of platforms most memorable characters gave tribute to Micheal, the player who controlled them. After that toast, Tretton said the characters all decided to duke it out in a 2D fighter platformer. We got to see the game in action at Sony's Press Conference tonight in L.A. at E3 2012, with two players using a PS3, and two using a Vita, all playing together.

In addition to known characters like Sly Cooper, Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal) and Fat Princess, there will be a little scoundrel named Nathan Drake from Uncharted as a playable character in PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale.

Then the lights went dark in the coliseum, and the crowd of eager gamers were treated to a fancy video reveal. A girl's voice giggled, and the unmistakable helmet appeared on the screen. That's right, the Big Daddy from BioShock will get into the ring along with Solid Snake, Kratos, and the rest of the PlayStation All Stars.

The crossplay between the Vita and PS3 is a brilliant move and gameplay seemed to work seamlessly between the handheld and the beefier console. Hopefully, PlayStation All Stars will help Sony sell some Vitas. At least, that's what Jack Tretton is betting on.

Wait, when was Solid Snake confirmed!?

This game is a definite day one buy for me :D

I always wanted Super Smash Brothers on a handheld...

I shall settle on this ;)

I like Smash Bros a whole lot...and the more Smash Bros style games on different consoles, the better...

The problem is they ALWAYS turn out to be utter garbage...

Crossing my fingers that this one will be different...

Kind of looks like Super Smash Bros with different skins.

I hope it's much more than that though.

Well, if you're going to blatantly rip off another franchise at least do it with panache. From what I can see I think they could achieve that.

I've never really liked these kind of games, but I might be more positively inclined if Akiyama from Yakuza got added in...

Hell I'll bite. The chance to stick a drill in Nathan Drake's chest is worth throwing down a few bucks.

My sides blasted off into deep space.

OT: I may get it if I ever decide to overlook it's official status as a SSB knock-off, even if it was pretty much all but said before. :/

Snake's becoming quite the little fighting game whore isn't he? Next thing you know he's gonna be in Soul Calibur VI, or Marvel Vs Capcom 4, for some reason.

All right Microsoft! Get in on this! I wanna see Blinx the Time Cat getting chainsawed by Marcus Pheonix, who is then torn apart by a L4D witch. Who is then shot by Solid Snake, just to complete the set.

New Smash Bros is coming to the 3DS and WiiU. But I get your point.

Im suprised I dont see more flaming of this. I see so much hate elsewhere for copying Super Smash Bros. Which it does, I'll admit. But when has shameless copying been a bad thing? Theres a demand for the game, it looks like it will be top notch, and it looks fun. Is it so horrible that its not original? Thats my rant for today.

Anyways, cant wait for this to come out. Dont own a PS3, so Im glad to hear its coming out on the Vita.

Marvel vs Capcom vs Snake.

Snake wins.

No Legacy of Kain characters = NO MONEY

Using the Soul Reaver to stab the smug bastard know as Nathan Drake is a dream that every Amy Henning follower should have as reality.

While this does look like a blatant copy of SSB it still looks awesome. Too bad I just have an xbox.

Is it so horrible that its not original?

Nope. If they're copying a game, it might as well be a game we could use more of. I mean, let's face it, what other cross-platform fighting games are there other than Smash Brothers? No, Capcom vs Whoever was on the list this week doesn't count because they're different kinds of cross-platform fighting games. Also, it'll be cool to see how they treat the mechanics and characters.

Just hope it doesn't suck. That, and that they still let Nintendo borrow some characters for their titles, too. Maybe even borrow Nintendo characters later...

Still rather Smash Brothers, but will definetly give this a look.

is Snake dlc? It sounds like a golden dlc moment

Imagine: Super Smash Bros v. Playstation All Stars (providing the latter turns out as great as the former) ... I would buy that cross-over in a second!

are they even allowed to put snake in there? In such a similar game?

He wasnt added by the developers, he snuck himself into the game.

Well, I really hope they don't forget about Spyro and Crash to put in. They better not put in the abomination that is the new Spyro though, I want the old one! Snake is of course gonna be in it, since he's the main character of a lot of PS exclusives. But yeah, it's an obvious Smash Bros clone, but I love Smash Bros so a game with sony characters in that style is gonna be quite good.

probably in a box

And we finally see Yahtzee's favourite new game emerge - a game he specifically asked for.

OP: Wait a minute... Playstation All Stars??? Wasn't Bioshock an Xbox exclusive until well after it's release?

Or another way of putting it: "DAMNIT MICROSOFT!!! Why didn't you do this first??? I wanna be a fuckin' Big Daddy!!!!"

*sigh* Well It's finally happened... A Playstation exclusive that I cannot deny is an amazing idea and wanting... really, REALLY badly...

This might just be the ticket that buys me a PS3 or a Vita...

It would probably not get the hate mail if it weren't a blatant attempt to cash in on the Wii's success (again), but as the previous few years of E3 have shown, Sony has absolutely no interest in being original. It'd rather copy its more successful competitors to the letter and then wonder why people don't want to buy its more expensive version instead. :p

There are other designs it could have chosen but the devs got somewhat lazy and went for the SSB model. I'm not angry so much as disappointed that they didn't try to differentiate themselves and gamble a little bit. Nintendo really stuck their neck out with the Wii and other such things, and their gambles paid off BIGTIME for once. Here we see Sony playing it safe instead of getting crazy and creative with it, which isn't bad necessarily....it's just less than what they deserve.

But I suppose if "Book of Spells" was meant to be Sony trying to be creative....*shudder* then I guess I understand why they might be fond of copying other people's stuff instead.

SilverBullets000:
Nope. If they're copying a game, it might as well be a game we could use more of. I mean, let's face it, what other cross-platform fighting games are there other than Smash Brothers?

Well there's Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, a number of DBZ fighters....

I mean let's be realistic here, there's any number of styles they could have chosen to copy from. The fact that they once again opted to copy Nintendo is sort of hard to ignore.

No, Capcom vs Whoever was on the list this week doesn't count because they're different kinds of cross-platform fighting games.

That's sort of the point: why copy your competition directly if you could try to mix it up a little and be unique? There's a lot of cool styles they could have gone for that would have made their game more unique and possibly way more fun. They'd get a lot less hate for being SSB....if they weren't SSB. Just sayin'.

Also, it'll be cool to see how they treat the mechanics and characters.

Demo seems to play a lot like Brawl, except with the Smash Ball mechanic reduced to a simple "build up damage and deal out damage to get more power" sort of thing.

I'll only show real interest if Sir Daniel Fortesque gets confirmed...

CriticKitten:

Okay let's bring this back to actually saying something, rather than spouting silly hyperbole on both sides. All you're saying here is 'I don't like Sony' instead of providing reasons for your opinions.

So I counter your 'Sony has absolutely no interest in being original' with Sony has supported the creation of a game where you play a character growing and evolving over 15 years, played by Ellen Page
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117638-E3-Sony-Unveils-Ellen-Page-in-Beyond

What's more they paid for and spent extensive marketing money on a cutscene based, story game where you follow the adventures of 4 characters chasing a serial killer with no restarts that was so different from anything else that people aren't even completely sure if it counts as a game in the normal sense.

Or they sought exclusivity on a game where you play the dream of a flower

Or they created a game where you can make absolutely anything in existence, more creative and original than anything ever to come out. And when people didn't buy it, they slashed the prices and continued promoting it, because they knew it had potential
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuCFvRW6sSo

For that matter, describe me one game that plays like their flagship franchise, Uncharted. (there is precisely one other game, Enslaved, which copied Uncharted and from the looks of it Tomb Raider is going down that route too)

On the technical side, how about allowing Steam to run on consoles? Or creating cross-platform games?

Pioneering console MMOs,
Creating a game where you play as a photographer taking after animals.
Making a card game where you scan the cards in with a Playstation Eye
Follow that up with a game that's like ICO, Shadow of the Colossus

Now I'm not saying that Sony is a particularly original company, just that they have and will shown interest in some stunningly original things and games, if you would like to reformulate you position and come up with a consistent standpoint I'm happy to talk about that and we can decide how original Sony are as a company in a meaningful way.

How is this not Sony taking an interest in innovation?

All this amazing stuff (and check out the Last of Us gameplay footage) is not cancelled out by Sony making their own version of a game type that's only really had one successful franchise ever. Put that in context, when we have CoD, Medal of Honour, Battlefield, Homefront you want to call Sony out as not seeking innovation for making a type of game that Microsoft, Activision, THQ, EA etc have never tried to make? Yeah it's not innovative, but SSMB is a brilliantly fun type of game that has only ever come out on Nintendo consoles, isn't it about time someone actually though that maybe other people would want to play a similar game too?

I mean it's already been established that even the gameplay is much more Dissidia style than Smash Bros. It's not innovative, but it's not unoriginal either, it's just an untapped genre that it looks like they're going into for the own thing. It would be unoriginal if the skill sets layout etc was just copied from Super Smash Bro's. Instead they're going into it with a 'we want to make a SSB type game, how are we going to design it?'

How do you think I feel!

As much as this is good news to me (especially the big daddy)...
ADD JAK AND DAXTER DAMMIT
*whew*, sorry I'm good.
Jak seems BUILT for this game, considering his abilities.

Ye, I remember when Bioshock was an "exclusive" my friends, who all had PS3s called it the shittiest game they had ever seen...and as soon as Bioshock was ported to the PS3, their opinions changed as well. Weird that.

OT: Looks cool, but can't really say I'm all that interested in it. Depends on how it ends up being, really.

we need Snake(maybe Raiden or someone else from MGS games) Jax,Ratchet in this game as well.

So, is "Smash Bros Clone" gonna become a subgenre of game now? I kind of figured it was coming when they started shoehorning cameos into the Soul Calibur games, but it looks like things are in full swing now.

Huzzah.

If not an M+ game I'd probably buy it. Can always use more games that are actually fun to play with the kids.
