Spy Hunter Returns in Spy-Slaughtering New Trailer

The legendary 1983 arcade classic returns, for PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS.

Spy Hunter, the Bally Midway arcade thriller from 1983 that became a videogame legend, has a new lease on life courtesy of Warner Brothers. The G-6155 Interceptor - capable of transforming to a boat and an off-road monster, all the better to chase down enemies - will return later this year for your spy-killing pleasure. Their latest trailer shows of a little of the action you can expect, provided you have a Vita or 3DS.

You play as the unnamed Agent, driving the revamped supercar down the most dangerous highway on earth. Spies - or terrorists, this time out - abound, and it's your job to zap the lot of 'em without gunning down too many civilians en route. "Strategic strike long-range weaponry," will be at your disposal, according to Warner Brothers, "plus additional support from of an unmanned aerial support drone, enable players to plan their destruction when assaulting enemy agent strongholds." The original featured machine guns, missiles and oil slicks; the drone is new, and there are probably other tricks up the Agent's sleeve. Plus, of course, the iconic Peter Gunn theme tune, which thankfully doesn't seem to have been changed too much.

Hokay folks, repeat after me: "oh God! I'm how old?"

Now that's over with: this is due out October 9th for the Vita, slightly later for the 3DS. Yes, there will be multiplayer, but only for the Vita, and Warner Brothers also promises "multiple mission types" based on the kind of vehicle (boat, car or off-road) you happen to be driving. No word on how many elements of the old game will resurface in the new; maybe this time there'll really be a graveyard level after all ...

I hope Grey Mann doesn't get his hands on that!

Loved the original a million years ago,("oh God! I'm how old?") not so sure about this one. I hope there is a demo for my Vita.

Oh-ho-ho-ho, that thing looks great! Welcome back, Spy Hunter.

Ah fond memories, even if my memories come from playing it on my dads computer. A shame it's getting such a limited release though. Spy Hunter seems perfect for the Gritty urban reboot" treatment.

Wasn't there a spy hunter game for the ps2/xbox with The Rock in it? Was that any good?

I remember playing the original game but this updated version look so and so. Well either way I joped it's good.

I wasted too many hours on the original. (Hums Peter Gunn theme.)

???? I remember a PS2 revamp but I don't remember hearing about The Rock. As far as it being good, I recall that it came out around the same time as a really bad James Bond game and a few reviewers were saying something like "If you want a good James Bond game, play Spy Hunter instead."

There was a Spyhunter released on that generation of consoles, but I'm not sure if The Rock was in it. The Rock was actually slated to appear in a Spyhunter movie and video game though at one point, but they thankfully were shuttered. Especially since if I recall correctly, gameplay was going to include sections where you GOT OUT OF THE CAR.

YAY!! loved classic spy hunter going on my must buy list

Well, video game movie. Or, more generally, adaptation problems; getting out of the car is kind of like Judge Dredd taking off the helmet.

And Rob Schneider.

Diane Lane can stay.

There was "Spy Hunter" on both the PS2 and XBox which actually was pretty good (I think I still have my Xbox version). Then there was "Spy Hunter 2" which, if I remember correctly, had nothing to do with the first game (aside from the car and weapons....oh, and you're a spy) because it had a different storyline and I'm not even sure it had the "Peter Gunn" theme

THEN there was "Spy Hunter - Nowhere to Run." This was based on the movie starring The Rock. I remember seeing a trailer for the movie, but not sure if it ever came out.

Somewhat off topic, but speaking of revamped retro games, did anyone see that Giana Sisters Kickstarter that's going on? I'm a bit Kickstarted out, but they've got the thing mostly finished. And more Hülsbeck and Machinae Supremacy music in the world can only be a good thing.

Sounds like a prize candidate for development hell. I used to know someone who's a big wrestling fan. If The Rock did that movie, I'd have heard of it.

wow, i love that song. It's the song that i remember the most from the original, which i was playing on a Colecovision (!). so many years ago...
