Microsoft Spokesman Takes Potshot at PS4 Event

Microsoft was not overly impressed with Sony's strategy.

Larry Hryb, better known as Microsoft's Major Nelson, might not have his own show anymore, but he's still one of the more recognizable names associated with the Xbox brand. Like many gamers, Hryb watched the proceedings from Sony's PS4 event with great interest. As one might reasonably expect from a competitor, he was not thrilled with the results. Hryb took to Twitter for a potshot at Sony, marking one of the first official Microsoft responses to the new device.

In the hours leading up to the announcement, Hryb tweeted a photo of his team's 3 PM meeting, showing that they brought popcorn to watch Sony's proceedings. When the live stream ended, he shared his thoughts. "Announce a console without actually showing a console?" tweeted Hryb. "That's one approach." There are many ways to interpret Hryb's response, from a smug statement, to a harmless industry jibe, to genuine disappointment at the lack of details, but fans won't have to wonder for long. "I'll share my thoughts on the show this weekend," Hryb promised.

Microsoft may have big console plans of its own for E3 later this year, and if Hryb's comments are any indication, fans could reasonably expect to see an actual system on display. Otherwise, Sony has thrown down the gauntlet, Victorian duel style, and Microsoft is prepping a proper response. This weekend, we'll see what it has to say.

Very.

PS4 Official Announcement: Better with Kine- Nope, can't say it with a straight face.

It's cute when console devs fight eachother.

It's like watching small children call each other names.

Larry Hryb

How on earth do you pronounce that surname?!

Let's hope Microsoft has a strong contender in the Nextbox to warrant this smug reaction.

I mean seriously. Does anybody wonder about that? I think that if he said something positive about it, he'd face consequences instead.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if he had said "S&£t! That looks the [email protected]££$?s. f€$k me that is sweet. And check out the new controller. F$!k me but I want it!"

These people do realize that nothing they say has any real meaning until they actually announce their own console, right? No? Well then, let the pointless name-calling commence.

I think it's pronounced "Herb" but don't quote me on that.

Thats not news, it'd have been news if he'd tweeted about pre-ordering one or something.

By the way...

The H is silent :P

I looked it up, and for those wondering, the correct pronunciation seems to be "herb," with an audible "H." I would have guessed "rib," with a silent "H" like in my own name, but there you go.

He kind of has a point.

I mean, really, at this moment, the Playstation 4 is kind of the Schrödinger's cat of games consoles.

If that's the only criticism he has, it means he's jealous and scared. And he should be. Especially if the rumor about Kinect being mandatory and watching you all the time is true.

Larry "Herb" aka Major Nelson my friend

As long as both consoles have a decent stable of exclusives and aren't both steaming piles of horrid (A distinct possibility) I'll once again probably end up owning all major consoles AND a half decent gaming PC...

Microsoft's big announcement: we have thrown out the controller, everything is kinect Drivin! The PS4 trying to show us up by having motions sensors built into it's retail controller, we'll make the human body the controller now!

Seriously, in terms of sheer gaming, both consoles are probably going to be relativly on par with eachother. I can't see Microsoft outdoing Sony by "that much" unless they beef up their console, and either have it cost a bundle, or be at a significant loss for Microsoft.

In terms of gimics, I couldn't care. I don't social game, I don't share, the fact Sony already has it makes no difference unless spontaniously I got into id. Microsoft might have a similar interface. Weather people like it or not, social gaming is a significant topic and they both will have it as a sub focus for their consoles.

Sony has already shown their controller gimics with touch pad, eye motion sensor, and Vita connectivity. Microsoft's rebuttle will be more Kinect support, and possibly pad support for their version of "mobile gaming". They will announce a FPS, possibly more Destiny, or Halo. Gears of War most likely, at least something from Epic. A single original IP that is comperable to the cartoony Knack. Maybe get their hands on an RPG just to be contrary to Sony not having anything conclusive from Square. ( I admit their presentation with Square showing off a demo we saw almost a year ago, and " a new final fantasy " didn't impress me).

These are my wild preditcions. The system specs will try to be pandered off as being "supirior" to the PS4, but in likelyhood will probably be no less more powerful then eachother.

At least Sony have given an event, Microsoft. I always find that when MS bashes a product, it's usually one that is yet to, or is taking off.

Ballmer on iPhone | You don't need proof of the iPhone's success
Ballmer on Android | Android's Success
Ballmer on Chromebook | Chromebook's Success

I'm not saying PS4 will be a hit, but if it's got MS's attention to bash it, then it means MS are scared of it and are likely to be hit hard by it. I really hope Sony can regain ground in this generation. The specs aren't impressive, but they don't need to be, just give us a great experience.

Captcha: "Hold your tongue" - Too right, captcha.

I want the PS4 to succeed now, just so MS will have to face up to all the cheap jabs.

Not unveiling the console was probably pretty clever, because they can drop that bomb whenever they like and be guaranteed a fresh wave of press

To be fair, he is just saying what, judging by Twitter after the conference anyway, most people where saying anyway.

We all know the PS4 event sucked. But, thats only because they are saving all the good stuff for E3. Sony have insulted the Xbox and the Wii. Its what these companies do.....or do you expect them to praise another companies console? They never think much of their competition, but behind closed doors, im sure they like some of what there competitors do.

As always.....wait till E3 for the real war. To see the ACTUAL games and gameplay footage. Then we can make a better opinion of what we think is the better console. For me personally, WiiU is blah.....but then ive no interest in Nintendo products, not interested in Mario, Zelda and Metroid and never have. Had a PS1 and PS2 (greatest console ever) but PS3 was very blah to me as they lost all there exclusives like GTA, Resident Evil and Silent Hill among others....cough cough..Final Fantasy. So far the PS4 is looking great, eventhough the event sucked. Time to see what the new Xbox has to offer.

An for the record, its about games. Not all this social media bullshit.

And when the next Xbox contains more faulty hardware that causes it to explode on contact with a disk?

Sony showed me what I wanted, the games, but then again Microsoft has never been good with the whole "exclusive" game thing

I look forward to learning about the new adbox, and how it's better than PS4 because it has a subscription for everything every other console offers for free.

I want to say "how childish" but then I remember this amazing commercial from Sony:

I agree with him. All I heard was bad news. One thing I'm still confused about is did they actually say every digital game I just bought on PSN is just gonna be gone when I get a PS4? Why the hell would anyone start building a collection on PSN now if it's gonna be a wash. That seems insane. They just got PSN working properly less than a month ago. I have a pretty large collection of PSN games not to mention paying for PSN+ access. If thats true no wonder their stock is dropping. I'll certainly be in no hurry to get a PS4. I'm backlogged as it is with PS3 games.

I'd be weirded out if he didn't take a potshot.

Can you imagine, a world where console developers got along and work together?

It just means that you want to keep your PS3 hooked up. If the PS2 is any indication, they will continue supporting the PS3. The thing they need to do is up the number of activations by atleast 1 so I can activate my PS4 without removing a PS3.

Adam Jensen:

That's still a rumour, whereas the dualshock 4 is confirmed to be designed to work with a ps4 included evolution of ps move......

Can't say MS should be worried that kinect being in the box may affect their standing relative to Sony if Sony has already confirmed move will be.

They'll probably show the console immediately after microsoft big reveal.

By giving limited details they can wait to see the competition and make changes to counter anything special ms announces.

Wait, that's it? That's all he said? That's barely even a potshot at all. That's more like a bit of snark. How is this even news? It must be a slower news day then when the 6 o'clock news runs that story on fireman rescuing a cat in a tree.
