Sony Invites Notch to E3 With a Golden PlayStation

Sony golden playstation one for notch

And you thought your custom console plates were classy.

How do you send an invitation with style? Email's out of the question, and a card simply won't do. Well, if you're Sony, you send a gift that's not only classy and stylish, but also plays Final Fantasy VII. That's exactly what Minecraft creator Notch recently found in his mail - a golden PlayStation One, paired with a VIP invitation to Sony's PlayStation 4 press event at this year's E3.

At the moment, console gamers can only enjoy Minecraft on the Xbox 360. Despite this, Notch and Microsoft aren't exactly best buds: the indie developer has openly criticized the direction of Windows 8 and Mojang has expressed interest in porting Minecraft over to the PlayStation when their exclusivity deal with Xbox expires. Notch also remarked that the Xbox One is shaping up to be a disappointment, commenting that he "wanted a game console, not a voice and gesture based TV remote box." It seems Sony has been listening, and in keeping with the company's recent efforts to win over indies, they'd like to extend a welcoming hand to Mojang.

Ever the thoughtful gift giver, Sony evidently packaged an old copy of Dungeon Master 2 with the golden game system. Granted, the company overlooked the fact that the gift did not include PlayStation One video or power cables, but it's the thought that counts, right?

LOL! They sent him a PSone to lure him away from the Xboxone.

Personally they would've had me at "Plays FF7".

I really am liking Sony and their aggressive move to support the indie scene.

Fair play, it's a little crazy seeing just how hard Sony are courting the high profile indie's right now. I hope they can turn it into sales for indie developers too

I never heard of Dungeon Master 2. Anybody ever played it? What is that about? 0_0

OT: Very cool of Sony to do. If you're going to bribe, do it like this! :D

PSone, I am not disappoint

OT: that's pretty sweet. I'm sure Notch has the cables lying around somewhere.

Wait, is it gold-colored or made of gold? Either is pretty neat, but I'd much prefer the latter ;)

Heh, PSOne. Wonder if that's a jab at Microsoft.

You make a dungeon and are evil, it's pretty fantastic. I adore it.

Seems Sony's getting their ass in gear now that they see their chance. Great for them I suppose, I'm not into the console scene but so far the PS4 is looking much more attractive then the xBone

I instantly want this to be available to purchase despite the fact that I already have two consoles that play PSOne games.

Seeing Sony and Nintendo going after indies has been interesting. E3 is going to be very interesting, that's for sure...

If nothing else, Sony is making all the right moves as far as PR is concerned. They're playing this brilliantly so far. Also everyone who said their reveal event was pretty bad, in hindsight after the XbOne's, it seems pretty good. As it focused on...games and game development.

"won't due"? Think you might have to change that a little.

OT: That's a classy way to invite someone there Sony, props to you. Smart too getting one of the Big Indie guys out there to turn up to E3 for you.

The PSone is looking better than the Xbone!

It's funny how Sony are mopping up the popular indie developers that Microsoft fucked over, whilst Microsoft are getting in to bed with two time Golden Poo award winners EA. I guess that is a sign of the directions each console is going in.

He should flip that case over and check for the mark of the beast.

I too aspire to be someday have attempted bribes sent to me.

wouldnt it be funny if they make that the new console look

Initially, I was planning to just go straight for the Nextbox, because I have a 360 with a bunch of games.

After Xbone reveal, the lack of backwards compatibility, and an effectively always-on internet requirement had me decide to skip this generation entirely.

Now I'm pretty much set on getting a PS4.
Sony is doing everything exactly the kind of way I believe should be rewarded with a purchase.

More reasons Sony is better than Microsoft in every way. Let's just hope Sony's conference doesn't disappoint Notch. That would be pretty embarrassing

I'm throwing money at the screen and nothing's happening...I want that golden Psone!

Well played Sony...Well played.

Indeed, this might be a basic PR move, but at least it's reassuring that Sony is competent enough to pull off a basic PR move without pissing off everyone, and they are at least vaguely in touch with what their audience would hear about and approve of.

After the Reveal, I'm starting to believe that if someone would have suggested this at Microsoft, they would have replied: "Notch Who? Is that someone we saw in Television? No? Then let's make a public stetment about how he can kiss it, I bet no one will notice."

Well If he can't find any cables, at least he can put it on a pedestal like a golden statue.

Well it seems Sony has the high ground this time, but i wouldn't finalize any bets Juusstt yet, if their reveal at E3 goes bad that might cause some shifting opinions. Of course I don't know how M$ are going to recover after this huge disaster so how this turns out is anyone's guess.

P.S I wonder how much that Golden PSone is worth?

I think most of this press stuff is going to be eventually pretty inconsequential either way to how well the consoles do. Christmas is a long time away and stuff like prices and exclusives are going to be more important to people than whether a press conference had the right focus or not.

But the bit about being in touch with their audience is the one thing that might really mean something and whats so cool about this. Sony actually recognised that the sort of people who make these games will totally geek out about an original edition of an old PS1 game and this is the stuff we love and a pretty cool way to connect.

Plus it shows Sony are learning, they're stepping way away from their 'our advertisements can be nonsense because we're that good' sort of thing they were doing before.

I finding it interesting that Microsoft and Sony seem to have sort of switched strategies. Ie. Microsoft are now trying to push strange tech, and Sony are now trying to make is self as appealing as possible to developers.

That sounds a lot like Dungeon Keeper, are you sure are thinking of the right thing?

I checked with two friends today and was left speechless when they both said that they'd rather have an Xbone. One of them's reason? "It has a projector!" Tomorrow I'll make sure to fix them.

Ugh. Sorry for the double post, Argentina's 3G is terrible.

It's strange isn't it? Why would Microsoft swap a winning strategy for a losing one? They are either unfathomably arrogant and think their supporters will buy anything they put out or they are 100% convinced that this is the way of the future and will back it to the hilt. Either way it comes off as a bit mad.

It's good to see a gaming company actually trying to appease gamers instead of just telling us to "deal with it". Encouraging indie developers seems like a very good move on their part.
I do have a feeling that no matter how much hate people have for the Xbone, they'll just shut-up and take it when MS will announce the exclusives.

I think you are confusing it with Dungeon Keeper. Dungeon Master 1 & 2 are old-school dungeon-crawler RPGs.

They are either in denial about the Xbone, or know literally nothing about it if that is their only reason. Set them straight fellow Kingdom Hearts fan! *salutes*

OT: I'd nerd out so much if I had a golden PSone. Seriously, this may be a PR move, but it's a damn good one that's for sure. If Sony does well at their E3 event then there is huge hopes for their console. The Xbone has a lot of things that it's gonna need to do to be able to recover from the abysmal reveal they had.

And this shows they have a good sense of humor too, bribing Notch with a Playstation One to move away from the Xbox One, bloody perfect move whoever came up with this I take my hat off to them.

recent efforts? Sony has, for the last few years, worked hard on developing it's relationship with indie developers, by treating them as equals in business and as valued clients sony has been able to provide a remarkable selection of high quality indie games.

Sony has had some really good PR in the last few years and i hope they do continue on their current path, focusing on developing great games and making it easier for developers to work with the PS4, i like the developer minded approach they take, because while we the customers are the lifeblood of the industry, it's the developers who play the most important role, and when it's easier and cheaper for them to make good games then we all win (and 3 million sales won't be considered a failure)

Well, good to know Sony decided to fire it's entire marketing group, and then hire competent people. Great idea.

Sony lost my love a few years back with how they acted, especially during the PSN hack crap. But recently, between how awesome + subscription is and things like this, I'm warming up to them again.

This made me smile.

I wonder how long it took to tunnel down into the earth to mine all that gold?

What's this?
GOOD PR PRACTICES?!
Impossible. Silly Sony did it all wrong, don't they know that the cool kids (Microsoft) would of just letter-bombed him instead?

Got a few extras, Sony? I'll take one.
