Hardware: Shipbreakers Teases Glorious Gameplay

The Hardware: Shipbreakers debut gameplay trailer has a style that will be very familiar to fans of the classic RTS Homeworld.

The lineage of Hardware: Shipbreakers will be immediately obvious to anyone who's played Relic's brilliant space opera Homeworld. The similarities are blatant and undeniable, from the weaving trails of exhaust and dust to the pulsing, percussive soundtrack and even the clipped radio chatter. Even the logos are virtually identical; if I didn't know better, there'd be almost no doubt in my mind that this is Homeworld 3, especially since this trailer could very well be about the discovery of the great ship in the desert that launched the original quest for Hiigara.

Alas, it's not to be. While Hardware: Shipbreakers boasts a similar visual style, it will be a free-to-play multiplayer RTS set on the graveyard of LM-27, a world littered with wrecked spaceships. Players will struggle to survive the harsh conditions of the planet while battling one another for the wealth of salvage.

Hardware: Shipbreakers is more style than substance at this point, but a beta test is on the way that will reveal to participants whether the developers at Blackbird Interactive have been able to capture the "feeling" of Homeworld as effectively as it's nailed down the look. If you're curious, you can sign up here; if you're more than curious and want to guarantee yourself a seat at the table, you can pre-purchase the game here.

The Hardware: Shipbreakers closed beta is scheduled to begin sometime in the final quarter of 2013.

I suck at RTS's but I'm sold on that. Looks fantastic.

All that sand and yet Matthew McConaughey is nowhere to be found :(

You know, more Homeworld wasn't even something I knew I wanted. Can't wait.

This looks like fun, though I hope it's a bit more gated than traditional MMO games. I'd hate to start off with my dinky little group going to my first salvage operation only to get steamrolled by someone with a gigantic caravan because he played more than I did.

I so want to throw at them the $99 to get in on the beta...but alas i'm too stingy :(

I'm curious how they will make all those destructible modules and how big these vehicles can get. I loved Homeworld for the scale and detail of the ships. Targeting systems was awesome fun!

From what they have shown so far that big 6 wheeled thing is your base, so things will be smaller or equal to that I am guessing

OT: Want. Though I am still iffy about throwing 100 dollars at them. If the guide they offered was a tablet kinda thing like they show in the concepts for it, I would do it in a heartbeat though!

That's a bit beyond obvious, as in they fully lifted some assets.

But hey I don't mind if you bring us the next Homeworld story... sadly with F2P I suspect it will not go beyond online skirmishes, and that is just not what this show was about.

The Baserunner better unfold into a giant city or something. D:<

Hmmmn . . . thus far unimpressed to be honest. The thing that made homeworld cool was the outer space aspect. So this seems a bit more C&C ish or whatnot just with a homeworld aesthetic. Will need to see more

No sandworms to kill the unimpressive voice actors. Dissapointing.

I don't think i need prescience to figure out this is the kind of RTS i just can't get into.

It looks very intriguing but the F2P tag immediately turned me off. I just want to pay a single fee and get everything right off the bat. Only one game I know of and enjoy got F2P integrated in such a way that it does not feel intrusive. (Though avoid its godawful forums at all costs for God's sake!)

Are we sure about that? I mean, they did say the 6-wheeler housed the salvage crews, so how do we know it's not just the gatherer unit. After all, all vehicles shown in that bit of footage were scouting units.

Homeworld + Dune = good mix

but i'm worried about F2P model

An MMO RTS?

How will their servers be able to handle that? With a unit cap of like 200, that's 4,000 units for a 10v10... Are they putting a cap on the maximum number of players in a given area at one time?

As much as I love homeworld, I'm not really interested in an MMO. A large part of what made the homeworld games so great was their stories, I don't see how they're going to be able to replicate the kind of moving story with a whole race at stake in a FTP Free For All MMO.

The trailer they showed specifically for the unit had others in it as well, the biggest if I recall was a tank about half the size of it.

Though it is note worthy that the thing has shrunk by about 50% since their first concepts hit, so who knows these days!

That is assuming if you have a unit cap of 200 that each unit only costs 1. Maybe a salvage team costs 1, tank costs 10, fighter costs 50 ect.

Take a look at Wargame Airland Battle, they do 10 vs 10s on there and generally you will have tooons of units per player. If they do instanced battles then it shouldnt be too much more difficult than any other game that has its games run on company hosted servers.

I have literally no interest in a non-SP-campaign successor to Homeworld. F2P? Delusions of MMO Grandeur? No thank you. I'll just sit over here and cry quietly in the corner with my Supreme Commander and GOG copies of better games from better days...

Capcha: Grilled Cheese. Why yes, I would like some cheese with my whine...
