Left 4 Dead Demo Now Public

Left 4 Dead Demo Now Public

Can't wait until next November 18th to blow some heads off the undead? Get a sneak peek right now!

The wait is almost over. Valve's terrifying zombie-infested first-person shooter is marvelously close to fruition. While those who pre-ordered Left 4 Dead have already had plentiful opportunities to fight for survival in the first two levels of the oncoming zombie apocalypse, anyone with an Xbox 360 or a PC can now get a taste of the action. In case you missed it yesterday, the demo is now available for the general public to download via Xbox Live and Steam.

A free demo is a free demo, but the pot is all that much sweeter - and the brains much tastier - when zombies are involved. Still need some persuasion? Take a quick gander at game's heart pounding opening cinematic. If that doesn't get your blood pumping and your itchy trigger fingers twitching for some zombie slaying, first-person shooting survival horror nothing will.

The Left 4 Dead demo will be available until Nov. 18, when the game launches on Steam and at retail outlets for the PC and Xbox 360. Get in on the zombie infestation a bit early, while you still can.

w00t, ive been playing this since the preorder demo release :)

still not bored :D

best game ever

I just got this last night, and it's fan-freaking-tastic.

I love Valve, but I refused to give into the hype. Mostly because I'm not big on survival horror games.

But my buddy and I played this last night split screen, and then I played 4 player co-op over LIVE, and I'm hooked.

It's tense, you HAVE to work together, it goes from quiet creeping to fighting off HORDES of zombies in a split second...it's awesome.

I was really worried about playing online in a game that relied so much on teamwork (I'm sure every LIVE subscriber and their grandmas have stories about douches online), but either I lucked out on the two guys I got (The 4th was a guy on my friend's list, I knew he was OK), or the game just brings everyone together. We were communicating, running for our lives, saving each other's asses, healing each other, giving painkillers to the one who needed it...it was poetry in motion...a zombie bloodlust poetry...but poetry nonetheless.

It was supposed to be released yesterday at 3pm GMT (may be +1 due to daylight savings). It was delayed for 3 hours and I was sat in a Steam forum for that time trying to get information as to when it would be released. Within about 2 hours a thread went from about 10 pages to 50.

Totally worth it, downloaded the 3200mb and played both levels to death.

played it. love it. Freaking hate the tank though.

Fucking fantastic. Shame so many people are playing it on the pussy settings. Expert or nothing!

Wait, does this mean that it's only gonna work till the 18th? I hope not; I'd like to keep playing it, till I can get my new computer...

Afraid so. Demo cuts off at launch.

QFT
Smoker and Hunter are only dangerous in that they take control away from the player, not an issue when things are light, but when the horde comes out of nowhere, having one of these fuckers take away a player while the others are occupied with not being eaten by the regular screamers is VERY dangerous. Boomer is nasty because of his ability to attract aforementioned hoard, get vomited on or covered in that bile and your in for the fight of your life... horde just destroys. Now the witch is bad news, but if your prepared (and have a spare Molotov) she's can be dealt with fairly quickly so long as you keep your distance.

But the Tank...

Fucker.
Won't.
Die.

(note; now only play on expert, the lower levels just don't kick you in the balls hard enough)

ARGH. Thing came up behind me without me noticing (I was in the middle of a mob) and knocked me into a hunter's withing jaws. And I find it ironic that a L4D commercial just came on the TV in the background in my room. Although I've played through 3 times and have yet to see a Witch.

Before I said that this game looks average. Well after seeing that cinematic I take it back.

Boy do I take it back.

The witches are bitches. I saw one, but I thought it was just a woman sobbing on the floor, went up thinking it was an escort quest, and...BAM! One shot kill.

It's been out for two days now, not really news.

Be glad, be very glad. If you want to see a witch though, play on a harder difficulty, that will probably do it.

Last night there was a sobbing woman just outside the safe room. Party wipe.

Oh, and you 'can' jump from the roof, but I really wouldn't advise it. It's when the smoker and hunter tagteam that you're really screwed. Closing the doors after you does help though.

I worked that out when she clawed my face off. 80 health to dead in under 5 seconds, despite taking a shotgun to the face.

First time I saw a witch my team-mate shouted "Witch!" so I thought "SHIT NEW ZOMBIE SHOOT SHOOT!" Did so and recieved a great big fat claw to the face :( It then told me while I was getting mauled not to startle the witch.

Thanks a lot for the hint ;/

As for the rest of the game, played it, lots of fun, just wish I could get a game working that wasn't full of fucktards. Three games I just tried recently where we didn't get past the first kitchen because people were too busy sitting up on the rooftop shooting each other.

Damn fine game, Demo still throwing up surprises and LOL moments. Very anxious to continue on my way to Mercy Hospital. :)

First I'd like to say tactical coop is THE most under appreciated genre of the decade. It rarely gets even the lamest of considerations in most games despite being by far the most fun.

One of the biggest fears I had after watching all the gameplay videos is that it was going to be mindless fast-paced Serious Sam style action. Anyone who's seen a zombie film knows that it's the lulls and tension built up between action that makes the film engaging. Thankfully the demo showed me that they know that too. It's a little much action peppered with tension instead of tension peppered with action, but close enough. I really hope we got a "customize the AI director" mod where we can adjust the frequency and severity of the attacks.

One of the things I like about L4D is how it forces you to challenge your conceptions about playing shooters. Sometimes you don't want to go through every room must because you can. Most of the time going into a crazy circle strafe in combat just means a lot of friendly fire. Closing doors, turning on and off lights, and actually avoiding some enemies are all good examples of expanded thoughts. How many games of Unreal would you ever willingly give up your health pack to another player? In L4D its often one of the only ways to improve your own chances of survival.

I really like how it punishes individuality, discoordination, greed, and impulsiveness. It really is at odds with the typical gamer mind set and so you get an excellent set up by putting people who usually aren't good at teamwork into a setting that requires it. The interplay between 4 human players is by far the best part about the game.

I'm hoping the full game is more dynamic and more complex. The demo so far is variable but still hugely the same. I'd love to see a bit pile of rubble come down between two pairs of players forcing them to link up later, pathways open or blocked randomly, and other considerations that force you to use your head.

Ok so after spending a hour and a half and about 9 restarts from the subway. I posted my thoughts on the demo. Then realised no one was talking about it there, your all talking about it here. so copy and pasted from there my thoughts.

Ok so i just got through my 1st expert run through of the l4d demo and i have to say it was awesome, this was my 4th run through so far and each one has been different. Also my 1st run through with my mic which i think adds to the experience greatly.

I do have a few issues with the game in that i was expecting a higher level of realism. Not that im saying its bad how it is, but some custom settings for realism might be nice. It may have these in the full version i dont know, but i think for added realism, maybe realistic ammo, no ammo pooling, no health packs, no rescues, no reviving, it would force every to be extra careful, and add a real sense of impending doom i think.

Now as it is i have to say i really enjoy the game, i love CO - OP PVE stuff, i like the whole teamwork thing its what keeps me playing city of heroes. Its just nice to have it in fps format for a change.

Also Zoey is hot lol.

Additional on a zombie theme, has anyone watched Dead Set. Just about to finish up the 1st half of the 1st ep as i didnt have time before work, So no spoilers please!

Ok fast zombies are offically in the nightmare file in my brain now, and how cool is a shooter not set in WW2 or some middle east country like Bullcrapistan.

Rats. Shame... though, quite a few people would just play the demo levels instead of buying the whole game. A testament to the replay ability of the game, for sure.
