Porn Game Maker "Starting A New Industry"

image

The maker of a new adult videogame called BoneTown says it is creating a "new industry" after criticizing the ESRB for failing to allow the marketing and sale of adult-themed games through regular retail channels.

Console manufacturers Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft refuse to license Adult Only-rated games for development on their systems, leaving the PC as the only viable alternative for companies that want to develop "porn games," but even those endeavors face significant obstacles from retailers, most of whom won't stock AO titles. As a result, the only practical way to market and sell the games is online.

"It doesn't make sense," said the CEO of BoneTown developer D-Dub, who refers to himself as Hod. "The ratings boards are not telling us that these games aren't for kids. We know that already. What they're telling us is that adult games shouldn't exist at all. We don't agree, and neither does our customer base of adults who are interested in games that might include themes like sex, drugs, and language."

"Since they've made it so that games like ours can't be marketed and distributed through the channels other video games use, we are starting a new industry to get this game out to our customers," he continued. That "new industry," according to the company website, is a merging of "the two most popular industries in the world," taken to the internet, where regulation is less intense.

Which leads to two obvious questions: One, can this effort succeed? Traditionally, porn games have run the gamut from juvenile to embarrassing to atrocious, and BoneTown doesn't look like it's poised to break that mold. They typically lack anywhere near the depth or complexity to keep gamers happy, while pornhounds are obviously less interested in playing a game and more interested in... other stuff. Porn and videogames may be hugely popular individually, but that doesn't mean there's an inherently worthwhile crossover between the two, a fact borne out by the simple absence of any viable sex game genre thus far.

The second question is more relevant to the industry as a whole: If BoneTown does manage to do more than simply vanish in a puff of nerd trivia, how likely is it to result in renewed efforts to rate and/or legislate videogames that are distributed exclusively online? It's unlikely, given the safeguards already built into the internet - can't buy this stuff without a credit card - and the fact that the distribution of pornography is already regulated to the satisfaction of the U.S. government, but a successful melding of videogames and porn is bound to get at least a few knickers in a twist.

Interestingly, while Spong claims the game has been given an Adult Only rating by the ESRB, the ESRB database has no listing for it. Not that it matters much, from a practical perspective: It may not have an AO rating but it very obviously would if D-Dub actually applied for a rating, so you'd never see this thing on a console or a Wal-Mart shelf anyway. Thus, BoneTown is available exclusively for the PC in digital format and, for those who prefer something tangible for their money and are willing to pay an extra ten bucks for it, a boxed release. To learn more about the game, check out BoneTown.com - adults only, please.

What's a Norse blind-archer god doing making teh pr0nz-game? /clueless *

Seriously, though, I think this guy is barking up the wrong tree. The vast bulk of "adult content" in North America is sold in specialty venues outside the MPAA rating system, and that distribution system would work fine for distributing games with the same content as well. It's not like you're going to see WalMart or Blockbuster carry these titles in any case...

* Who says Too Human is worthless? At least it taught me that...

Can we just ditch this whole Torchwood of an idea that 'Adult' means Shagging, Swearing, Stabbing and Jacking up?

Adult content could easily mean "Contains Philosophical Choices, Worldly Perspective or Understanding of the World"?

Given that a lot of the kids actually are far more 'Adult' than a lot of Adults?

If it's a informative view of the troubles inherent with the Porn Industry, like the use of 'fluffers' etc. then it could be an interesting diversion.
If it's just another reason to show titties, then just bung it on the top shelf in a newsagents.

And having seen the Youtube of it... Dear God, it's like Southpark without the production values, or the writing, or the innuendo, or...just it's AWFUL.

I can't help to see a slightly tragic irony in that; here is this guy trying to push porn games as a perfectly valid commercial entity yet he still feels the need to 'refer to himself as' Hod

What are you so ashamed of mate? Oh, wait...

Adult Only games would improve in content (meaning be less about over-the-top eroticism or immaturity) and quality if someone would have the fucking balls to stock AO titles. If you won't stock them, they won't make them at comparable quality to traditional games.

And if the ESRB would just fucking die and stop censoring things they disapprove of, maybe games could have a smattering of adult content in a tasteful way, rather than be entirely adult. I would love to see more realistic and adult situations in games, not for the eroticness, but for the realism. But put a strip club in the next Sims expansion, and the ESRB will yank the G rating on the whole series, not just AO the one expansion. They're biased, opportunistic prudish assholes who have the power to tell the world to live how they want us to.

What? Forgetting a little something called the entire freaking dating sim genre, are we?

I'm disappointed. This article has zero mentions of Leisure Suit Larry.

I checked the site just cause?
read a review and it sounds like...
Diablo, with porn. :P

Leisure Suit Larry not only contains "Adult Content" as it also is one of the hardest Adventure games I've ever played. Full of humor, sexual references, and ingenious puzzles.

Kudos to "Adult Content" because, as far as I see, it doesn't only mean sex & drugs, but also mature discussions, themes and issues (be it war, love, family, science etc).

As for "Diablo with Porn"...let's check out the demo. :)

These games will fail for one reason, and one reason only:

Who, with the internet being as wide and vast as it is, would pay 40-60 dollars for porn?

I think I want this game, it should be good for a few laughs.

There's a demo...tempting...

As with Guitar Hero...

...why not just make actual porn?*

I guarantee it'd be more fun than a simulation of the very same thing.

*OuroborosChoked is not encouraging anyone under their respective and semi-arbitrary local legal age to follow this advice. Think with your brains, kids.

And you think the porn industry is both thriving AND growing because people download all their porn for free? Ever see what porno DVDs go for?

not always they are refering to nudity and such, games do have those types of choices now but aren't rated AO, once you show some virtual booty you get slapped with an AO rating. i mean it's ok to show some guy's head explode when a bullet hits it but show a boobie and OMG IT'S THE END OF TEH WORLD!!!!111

the movie "This Film is Not Yet Rated" kinda explains it but more from a film view, games are pretty close to the same thing tho

Given that a lot of the kids actually are far more 'Adult' than a lot of Adults?

never been on xbox live or WoW have you?

as for the big 3 game companies not allowing adult games, they do in japan, well at least Nintendo and Sony do

Oh yeah? How would you like a sex minigame in Fable 2, to go with all of the other jobs? Tap A at the right time to insert, withdraw, insert, withdraw.

Unfortunately yes. There's a lot more 'Adult' comment on there about sexuality than you'd ever get in most 'Adult' media; but a lot less Adult behaviour.

Anyway.

Eh, I dunno. I enjoyed the Leisure Suit Larry series, but then again they were renowned for being over-the-top hilarious (to me, at least).

i was just going to say that.

I knew somebody was going to make a point of throwing Japanese sex games into this, but I decided that as long as it's necessary to link to Wiki to explain to people what the hell you're talking about, it wasn't particularly relevant.

If these X/AO rated games become as good as A Clockwork Orange or Requiem for a Dream, then Hod can start complaining.

Malygris:

After thinking about it, I'll concede that since that particular genre has so far proved unsuccessful outside of Japan, it isn't relevant to an article about the western market. However, for the sake of indulging my pedantism, I'll go ahead and post the argument I was originally planning on posting anyway:

Except that you were using the absence of a sex game genre to back-up your point of such a pairing being unlikely to produce a commercially and/or critically successful game. While I can't comment on their quality, the fact that there's a thriving market for these games in Japan surely shows that they are at least commercially viable, does it not? As for it being "necessary to link to Wiki", I'd be willing to bet that if you asked any member on this website about them, there's at least an 80% chance that they'll have heard about them at the very least as "those weird Japanese porn games".

Nice. Maybe soon Nintendo will get their shit together and finally make use of the Wiimote to design an interactive porn game.

Downloading pornographic games off the internet? Makes sense I guess, we all know the internet is for...

Sorry, It had to be done.

To seriously address the issue... there are plenty of pornographic games, even a pretty decent one I once played called Brave Soul. It was kinda like Diablo but with worse graphics. It wasn't a TERRIBLE game though, and was decently interesting. Which was good because it didn't jump into the sexy bits right away. There IS a market for it, but it's an incredibly niche market and not nearly the size that normal pornography would be. Now, Digitally Distributing movies is an idea, and one i'm suprised hasn't gained more steam. Usually Pornography leads digital technoligy.

Also, as much as I hate to agree with a guy who dev'd a game called BoneTown, the AO rating IS soft censorship. Unfortunatly it's just something built into the US culturally- the stores won't carry AO stuff because people would pitch a bitch, the Consoles won't carry AO becase the people would pitch a bitch. It's not likly to change anytime soon- look how long it took us to get a black president, and racial equality has at least a centurys headstart on "sexual liberation". The internet is their best option for...whatever atrocious games they're going to make. Honestly if you want a Porn game? Dead or Alive: Beach Volleyball. Nuff said.

TsunamiWombat:

Hoorah! But yeah, I don't know if porn-game have a real market. Or rather, a real market big enough to be marketable. People watching porn tend to want to..well, you know....one hand too busy to use the mouse.

Whilst gamers tend to prefer having something to do (sorry, I'm not actually trying to create these innuendos).

Maybe I'm wrong, but my thinking is if there were money to be made from this, a good game with porn in would have been developed already.

For example, Second Life isn't a porn game, but a red light district developed within there as almost a bi-product.

To riff on Yahtzee, "Press X to Not Ejaculate Prematurely"?

Ten bucks Fox News Doesn't report on this but Mass Effect 2 will receive a Fox News "News Alert" when it emerges that your avatar can butt-rape squid creatures with an uncanny resemblance to Bill O'Reilly.

ESRB has it pretty rough, but they need to step it up. Aren't ratings meant to inform people? Or is it a stamp of approval that the game is OK because it has a rating?

"Mom buy me this one!"
"It's rated Mature?!...I can't believe this!"
"I WANT IT!"
"Oh ok."

Reading the second paragraph (non bold) I can't help but laugh at the idea of Language themed games for Adults.
