Valve Releases Team Fortress 2 Update

image

Steam cilent updatin' mah game!

Team Fortress 2 received a fairly significant patch today, which adds a number of notable gameplay tweaks to the TF2 formula. The changes should please and anger a decent amount of folks in equal amounts - Spies and Engineers see significant buffs while Demomen might not be too happy with the changes they're receiving.

Engineers can upgrade teleporters and dispenser to a third level now. Taking a teleporter to the third level will reduce the annoyingly long downtime after each teleport, while upgrading a dispenser will boost its healing and ammo dispensing capacity.

Meanwhile, Spies can now recharge their cloaking devices by picking up ammo. Most Spy players have learned to play methodically, cloaking and decloaking and laying in wait while their devices recharge. This change should make Spying a more brisk, fast-paced experience, though don't be surprised to see large quantities of Spies playing recklessly in the near future as they go a little overboard with the newfound versatitility of their cloak.

Finally, the bad news: Demomen's sticky bombs can now be destroyed by any gun that uses bullets. It used to be that you needed a Soldier's rocket or a Pyro's airblast to take out fields of sticky bombs. No longer - shotguns, the Sniper's machine gun, the Heavy's minigun - they can all take out sticky bombs. Demomen will have to play a bit more cunningly (or less stupidly) to get their kills.

Valve also looked to the future of TF2 beyond this patch, announcing that the next class update would be for the Scout, and that they were focusing on making the class more versatile on different maps. They also mentioned that work is progressing on a "massive" update for TF2 on the 360 which will include all the new content that the PC version has seen in the past year. Finally, the TF2 engine will be getting a little bit of nip/tuck courtesy of the Left 4 Dead engine, meaning "some of L4D's performance improvements, like the better multicore support."

Cheers, mate.

Seems to be a fairly good patch. I'm a little worried however about the third level of dispenser. It can be a chore to get a bunkered up sentry, dispenser and engineer combo out of the way without having to pull out an ubercharge.

What A lovely birthday present.
Thanks Valve! It's perfect!

EDIT: Thank you. And I thought the next update would be Engineer.

^ Happy birthday to the person above me.
And <3 Valve. Can't wait for the scout patch next =D

Yes! The Scout! I am pleased!

I love the changes. Now Demos will put extra effort into the placement of their mines, keeping them out of sight.

Sweet. I'll have to fire up TF2 and check it out. Haven't played in a while :)

Good news. I'm glad the Demoman has been kinda nerfed.

Yay for having an effective counter against stickies! About damn time....

Any announcements on new Meet the Team videos?

Finally, I'm definitely going to have fun with my cloak refilling addition, previously the fastest way to refill it was to die...
No longer will I have those moments where I'm waiting secretly in a corner in the enemy base, everyone is just walking right by and my cloak is almost full and...out comes a random flame-swinging pyro. He didn't even know i was there, he just kind of came out of the doorway spinning around with left click held down...
The engineer is my second favorite class next to the spy, and the upgrading of the dispenser and teleporter seems pretty interesting.

And as for the demoman...about time. Now sticky guarded areas won't be completely impassible without a "sacrifice" like before. Well, maybe it wasn't like that every time, but the sticky's blast radius usually still killed someone even if it was blown away while in a hallway or the like.

No, but here's hoping! They'll might produce some new stuff whenever the Scout update comes out.

Good. I was afraid of an avalanche of whiny Demomen players coming in here and complaining how Valve won't stop nerfing them.

The demoman nerf is a bit too much of a nerf in my opinion, And this comes from someone who plays engineer more than demoman.

I held off a single demoman for 2 minutes as engy until an ubered heavy came along, he couldn't do anything because I simply shot his stickies with my shotgun.

The goldrush change is a bit odd, because it seems to be easier to defend, not attack on cap 2 of first stage.

The cloak refilling means I can stealth from one side of the map to the other on goldrush, it's great.

So does that mean no update for PS3? I love TF2 but my PC isn't good enough so I have the PS3 version. It seems a bit unfair to neglect those people who went with Sony over MS.

Havn't played for a while, is it on the 360 version?

PC

Be nice when they sort the multi-core support out for TF2, L4D runs lovely and uses all 4 cores. But TF2 only takes advantage of duel cores right now.

The Pyro likes these changes, back to the shottie for a bit.

Actually....if you combine Spy and Engie, you can have a cloaked backstabber on your sentry.
Spah now be protectin' mah sentry!

Possibly, but think of the Spy being uberhealed by the dispenser as he's sneaking up on the sentry.

It will be Meet the Pyro - its just 3 minutes of muffled grunts.

It is unfair, but thats not going to stop them doing it.

Unless he/she takes off the mask and shows us whos underneath!

It's too hard apparently, due to the fact there is no team that can code for the playstation working there, and xbox is apparently a lot easier to code for in relation to the regular PC version.

So they just give up. Come on Valve you're never going to stay on top if you give up if it's "too hard" grow a pair.

Played a morning of the new patch: Engies can team up to make some great strucures but have to stay to defend them, which means they can be sniped.

Spies are scary now...you can get stabbed at any time.

Demos can't just kamikaze through things, but they can certainly blow through things.

Nothing bad to see about the patch at all.

Had some giggles early today with a few clan mates, the new demo changes make em fun to fight against, but from demo point of view, I've not noticed any change, I still rake in the kills with them. Probably as I use stickys secondry to the pipe launcher.

The new dispencer is way nice and looks funky (has a medical pulse thing ontop thats animated, very cool Very Happy.) Level 3 teleports take next to no time to charge which makes attacking more fun, and isnt game breakingly fast. Plus upgrading EVERYTHING will take a while for a solo engineer.

I also think they've altered the medic particle effect around people as well. Its definately more noticeable.

With the 360 patch, maybe it will breath a bit of new life into the consul side of TF2, which might lead more into the PC side of things. One can only hope! As for the not coding for ps3... well, Valve are a PC developer, and have only just started branching out into consuls, the xbox360 is basicly a purpose built gaming PC, so I imagine its pretty easy to code for, whereas the PS3 has more cores the you can shake a stick at, and TF2 is designed for 2 max, potentially with more later on with the L4D improvements they're on about bringing in. But they'd have to do major recoding for the PS3 I think to remove DX8 and implement core support.

Its always been the PS3's problem is that lots of developers complain about codeing for it.

It has nothing to do with Valve being a PC developer or the PS3 being hard to code for; Valve outsourced the PS3 port to an external company, and as a result that company would need to update the PS3 build (but something tells me that Valve is not willing to pay project fees for that).

SWEET!, though, you could always move stickys with guns o_O, As engineer I always used the pistol to move away stickys
Though Now the spy will be over powerd, I hope the cloke will only restore like 1 second when you pick ammo.
Till next time
-"Bonk!"

The Spy isn't really overpowered, as he still flickers at times; and you really need him that good to take out the wall of sentries on Goldrush/Badwater.

One thing that slows the Demo down is that a sentry opening up on him obliterates any lobbed stickies.

I did the same. Though now rather then them moving they just pop out of existance when you hit them. Kinda better. As they still did damage to something or other when moving them out the way (or you get a retarded heavy pushing them away from him, only to knock them into a sentry farm...

My laptop and the L4D source engine don't co-operate.

Sadly, no. Valve doesn't have much love for the PS3, or at least some of the people in charge of them don't *cought gaben *cough*

1: GOD DAMN DYING POWER SUPPLIES!!!!! :(

2: valve didnt do the ps3 port, ea did. valve doesent want anything to do with the ps3. gabe newell has continually been saying that the difficulty that comes from programming ps3 games isnt worth the extra time and effort. its not just valve that has said this, a shitload of developers and publishers have said the same thing. and contrary to what someone has said there ARE people at valve that can program for the ps3.

3: honestly, the "pc isnt good enough" excuse maybe works for games like crysis, but you can build a new computer that can max out ANY source engine game for less that you can get a ps3 for. source engine is 4 years old at this point and runs VERY well. if your pc isnt good enough either upgrade or get a new one, just get an old geforce 7 series card and a cheap amd dual core processor and your set to go for $300-400.

Too little, too late...

Indeed, if he's inside he'll find it tricky to get around the problem, unless he shoots at an angle away from the incoming fire. Then however the stickies will only do minor splash damage due to them being further away.

Outside however, without a protective roof the Demo can just lob-em-over as usual, and hope that an Engy isn't hiding behind it shooting them down.
