PS4 Sells 2.1 Million Units Worldwide

PS4 Sells 2.1 Million Units Worldwide

That figure includes 700,000 consoles sold in Europe and Australasia.

It's been a good launch for Sony so far, and it has announced total PS4 sales of 2.1 million worldwide, as of December 1st. So far, 700,000 units have been sold throughout Europe and Australasia since November 29th, and by this point Sony's new console is available in 32 countries all over the globe.

"PS4 delivered the best launch in PlayStation history with the North American release and we've continued this incredibly successful start in Europe, Australasia and Latin America," says Sony's Andrew House.

"Demand remains incredibly strong and continues to overwhelm the supply worldwide, but we are diligently working to meet those growing demands and to deliver additional PS4 units to our retail partners throughout the holiday season."

The European sales figures should come as no surprise; we already know it's doing phenomenal business in the UK and Germany. Demand's been so strong that the PSN has suffered outages, now all those new machines are trying to access the network. PSN problems may persist throughout the holiday period.

Will there be enough supply to meet holiday demand? Well, Sony thinks so, and it's forecasting 5 million PS4 sales by next March. Just another 2.9 million to go, and with Christmas very near, it's looking as though Sony's expectations will be met.

If the PS4 does reach its 5 million units goal by March that will complete the book that the other two companies need to read call "How to Not Mess Up a Console Launch."

I hope they are able to meet the demand. The only one for sale at the Gamestop near my place is some bullshit 800 dollar bundle with a bunch of games I don't even want. And even that isn't available until the 6th.

Here's hoping they announce a Metal Gear Solid 5 Bundle. I'd buy the shit outta that.

You mean the book that has only one sentence: "say you won't do stupid shit the other guy did and launch with 2 mediocre games"?

I here I thought the 3 million by the end of the year estimates were a little unbelievable, this is crazy.

And it still is yet to be released in Sough East Asia and Japan.

"You must make sure your console launches with more than 2 worthwhile games."

I guess just add "also don't count on grandmas and soccer-moms to buy your next piece of hardware"

Sooo 1 million in North America within the first 24 hours, 2.1 million after European and Australia launches (still haven't picked mine up, they're out til shipments next year. I talked to a friend of mine working in retail, Xbone is still in stock. And that console sold 1 million in 24 hours after a worldwide launch. Go figure.

And they owe most of it to Microsoft's arrogance, incompetence and just plain old-fashioned greed.

It seems that Sony has well and truly learned from it's mistakes. That alone would be great news but hearing the PS4 constantly pay off for them is incredible. I can't wait to pick up a PS4 myself, though my current financial situation will probably keep me from doing so until it drops in price in a year or two.

Sony didn't learn anything, they basically did nothing. I mean, MS went ahead with their 'vision' and people hated them for that. Sony capitalized on that mistake by saying their console won't require always on connection and games won't be tied to your psn id and that was enough to win. As for the console itself launch titles are bad as always, and we will still have to wait, for at least a year, before any worthwhile games come out.

Make no mistake sony will still maintain their harsh policies regarding modding and if that story about every xbone being a dev kit will end up well MS may have the upper hand in the future.

It appears that only game devs can get the Sandbox ID, at least for now.

Microsoft having its 'vision' does not mean Sony didn't learn anything.

In fact its Microsoft who didn't learn from its mistake (until it was little too late).

That Orth guy's (or w/e the name is) twitter controversy should have been a warning sign for Microsoft to think: "maybe going with always online is not such a great idea."

These masturbatory statistic are pointless.

In the next year or two, the amount of X1 and PS4 consoles will level off to be nearly the same just like last generation...except with Japan because Japan is Japan;predictable.

On the contrary, their understanding of what the opinions of their target market are has substantially improved since the PS3 launch. It's not just about not following Microsoft down to a PR disaster; they also made sure to correct every mistake they made back in the last generation, making a console smaller and sleeker, the controller MUCH better, and crucially making the price point reasonable ("five hundred and ninety-nine US dollars" probably still haunts Kaz's dreams).

Furthermore, the dev kit part won't sell consoles. The market is different from PC gamers, and 99.9% of console gamers don't care about making their own mods or games. Remember, the Ouya was marketed as completely open to modding and hacking... And that hasn't exactly set the world on fire, hasn't it?

And the news keeps banging on about recessions and people feeling the pinch of inflated prices, but seriously, that many already? Its not even launched in Japan yet either, that'll add a million or so more perhaps. Plus the people like 2 of my mates who ordered their console late and are still waiting to pay for it. Pretty impressive.

I love my ps4 like a fat kid loves cake but my golly gosh do the games suck a fattie!

Kill zone is a little second rate. War planes (or some such) has awful controls. Resogun is pretty and meh (pretty meh, huehuehue). I don't think the cross generation games won't be as good as just generation exclusive

I agree on the price point :D

I think they reason why people generally don't care about console mods it's because previously it's been reserved to tech-savy guys, who really knew what they were doing. If these things were much more accessible and open who knows what would happen? As for Ouya don't forget, Ouya was never an established brand and it didn't have your CoDs, Battlefields, GTAs, Skyrims, Dark Souls etc. Anyway, only the time will tell us what it will end :P

Meh, it seems everyone went derp.

I don't understand how can PS4 sell this well. Not many good exclusives, and PC is better at the rest.

I get PS2 and PS3, after all, PS2 came with DVD and PS3 with Blu-Ray Disc, many, many people bought those systems for those reasons. But PS4 brings nothing new to the table.

I hope this is just big fans buying the console at launch but that the sales come to a halt.

*Looks to his right*

"PS2, PS3, X360, Wii... And, oh, behind that, a closet full of unplayed games."

*Looks back to his screen*

"Oh - and right in front of my nose, a computer that has a Steam-library full of games from Humble Bundles and Steam Sales. More than a hundred titles, of which I've probably only tried one fifth so far."

Yeah, not gonna buy any current gen consoles any time soon. Maybe I should just skip a few generations till I can finally plow my way through all those PS2-games I wanted to play.

All Playstaion needed to do was not fuck this up and... well they largely didn't fuck this up. apart from the PSN problems and the forecast Microtransactions in some games it's largely been a pretty standard launch.

On the other hand the Xbone has been mired in problem after problem. Here is a small list;

Baffling £450 price point
720p Resolution Gate
Unfavorable system performance comparisons
The hangover from the used sales debacle
Continued mishandling of the press
Kinect Privacy concerns and "Dick-Gate"
Massive rollout of microstansactions culture in Microsoft published games

It's been a sea of huge issues even if they were effectively forced to change some of the worst excesses by what can only be described as a consumer and press popular uprising. All the while people continue to not care the Wii-U exists.

In that regard it's not hard to see why the PS4 is selling so well. It's not the best show in town, but it is the least horrible.

I think a lot of people are buying a PS4 simply as a big "fuck you" to Microsoft. Let's face it, both consoles don't have much going for them at the moment and won't really hit their stride til mid next year.
I've said it once and I'll say it again, the console release supremacy is cyclical. One side edges out the other, gets cocky and then proceeds to alienate it's fans when their next console is launched. The underdog humbly panders to fans and then gains the ascendancy the next round, before getting cocky... rinse, repeat. Except for Nintendo; they're the strange kid tinkering with something in the corner.

Yeah, I heard about the microtransactions in the games. Seriously, that is just messed up. Fee to Pay as Jim dubbed it. I've seen none of that in my PS4 games and the Killzone Devs have stated that the Killzone multiplayer maps will be free.

I honestly love my PS4. And I'm so happy that I'm in the PS+, now. I've already downloaded over 80 dollars in free games just in the last month.

Also, where is your avatar from? I half suspect it's from the recent Desert Bus of Hope stream.

Adam Jensen:

Probably not all off it, they have been strenghtening the Playstation brand for quite some time with the last couple of years on ps3. I think they might have won a lot of goodwill on their exclusives while MS seems to have been resting on their laurels. Combine this with the recent PR disaster and we might have an explanation for their current succes.

I'm not buying a new console though, i'm content with what i got, there's still plenty of games i need to play, i haven't even scratched the surface of the DS library yet. But i would prefer if the PS4 ended up as the biggest, mostly because i want the japanese exclusives to be collected on 1 console instead of being spread out. Since i'm only getting 1 machine, it just seems more convenient that way. And my choice falls on PS4 because it seems the most interesting (no motion controls, voice commands and acces to ps1-3 titles) and i kinda hate Microsoft as a company... But right now, both machines look pretty damn boring, i don't think i could name any games that i actually want to play. There's a few on the orizon but they'll also be available on ps3...

I've heard PlayStation plus actually provides some nice benefits for users, it's one of the few pieces of pure good next gen news.

Desert bus may be over and molly may be gone from our screens but she will live on in our hears... and our gifs. Molly was fantastic this year, she's like some kind of Uke virtuoso. Also she has a very expressive face XD

In terms of release titles yes. In terms of sales they broke the record for biggest console launch in the US and fastest day one sales for consoles in the UK. I don't think they could do much better in that respect.

The PS4 only had about 2 worthwhile exclusives so there is that. One of the WiiU's problems was people who don't game regularly (basically the people who buy consoles mostly to play the annual releases) thought, and to a small degree still think that the WiiU is an attachment rather than a new console.
