Oculus Rift Selling "Just Fine" After Facebook Buyout, Claims Company
Oculus Rift Selling "Just Fine" After Facebook Buyout, Claims Company ![]() The Oculus Rift is selling "just fine" after Facebook acquired the company, according to Oculus' Community Manager. While Facebook's acquisition of Oculus VR, makers of the Oculus Rift, have been mixed at best, it apparently hasn't affected the sales of Oculus' second developer kit (DK2). In a post on the official Oculus Rift forums, Community Manager "cyberreality" states, "Just FYI: Sales of DK2 are doing fine. Thanks," which is in response to assumptions that the VR headset would take a hit commercially following Facebook's controversial buyout. For more news surrounding Facebook's acquisition and the Oculus Rift, make sure to read up on how the device will supposedly have a Facebook branding and have its interface changed, and also Cliff Bleszinski's rather lengthy response to the buyout, where he calls Markus "Notch" Persson a "pouty kid." Do you think Oculus' profits will take a hit due to the Facebook's involvement, or are people unjustifiably hating the sale and jumping on the "I hate Facebook" bandwagon? Well considering this will probably be the last dev kit that doesn't have facebook stamped all over it... yeah. It'll do fine.
Is it really appropriate to bring up the supposed Facebook branding when it's been disproven by a Facebook rep? It's been revealed as a false rumor; the article should at least reflect that.
I will wait until the final product is released before I put any consideration into purchasing it. Companies say a lot of shit and I have no reason to hold Footbook to its word. For now I do no more then read, listen, and contemplate.
Yup let's not condemn the thing before it's released, but keep a careful eye on it.
It was pretty obviously a fake rumour, and The Escapist has luckily corrected the original article, maybe just let it lay dead instead of throwing more gas on the fire?
It's been less than a week since the story broke, of course it's still fine... Anyways, even with one rumour being disproved (thankfully), there are still other reasons to not like where this could lead, forced Facebook integration, Facebook ramming in their business practices, etc,. EDIT: And before people say "durr nothing has happened stop being negative", yes this is all speculation.
It says a lot about facebook as a company that all the speculation has been negative. I mean if the news had ead 'Valve buys Occulus' the internet would have had a collective joygasm since the first leap everyone will jump to is 'HL3 + Occulus'. Heck even EA would have made a few people hopeful.. say what you want about EA and the microtransactions but they do have some nice games in their stables.
The difference being that Valve has been established as a company for the consumer as opposed to Facebook which is pretty much for advertisers.
In other news, British Gas CEO says power sales are doing "just fine" despite community distrust and the head of PR at RBS claims the bank is doing "just fine" despite thier constant string of public money funded cock-ups and bonuses.
im not sure it will 'take a hit' , but i am 95% certain it will have Facebook Required to use it on some level
This isn't like hating Bieber, Twilight or Ultramarines, Facebook has actually earned real reasons for people to hate them. Sure, a lot of those reasons might not be directly related to the Rift, but it's enough to worry people. It's not just baseless fear.
Excuse me? No reason to hate Bieber? He said rape happens for a reason.
It's funny for them to say sales are going fine when they still have only a devkit to offer. Had this been in the middle of selling their commercially-released final product, they would have probably seen a more tangible shift in numbers.
Reddit was filled with people cancelling their orders for the DK2. Personally, I don't see that as "selling just fine". Unless the internet is filled with liars or something.
Ummmm, no, it's moving devkits. Just because you sell them doesn't mean that they are "selling" just fine, seeing as how there isn't a consumer model yet. That said, I'm not surprised they are still moving. All the hate aside, this is the consumers first chance at eventually getting one. It was never going to be mass produced until it was bought out.
It's probably going to sell better after Facebook acquisition. Most people don't know about Oculus, but they know about Facebook and they use Facebook. They will want its latest toy.

I mean, it's been 3 days since acquisition. I don't think we all figured some magical Facebook fairy was going to fly into their office and just instantly change anything. Corporate policy creep is slow and subtle. It comes in the form of "Let's consolidate the oculus build system with Facebook's internal system". "Let's change our unit tests to conform to Facebook's style guidelines". It comes from a dozen shareholder meetings where they're scared of the Oculu's profitability, so you work with corporate to figure out how to help assure the investors it will make money. Slightly changing the product a hundred times to meet their expectations. Maybe it's conforming a little more to Facebook's brand or stylistic choices. This kind of change is hard to detect until one day you look back at where you were 3 years ago and how everything went to shit. It's a death by a thousand cuts.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Steam has blood on its hands, the internet just likes to ignore that it because "lolgaben". OT: The amount of people suprised by this news is Noone. Ofcourse it's going to sell fine, everyone on reddit was just blowing hot air.
I still don't know if I can blame the Oculus Rift people for selling out to Facebook. At this point, we really don't know what's going to happen. I'd say we should all just hope that Facebook got scammed out of 2 billion dollars, and the Rift will keep on working as advertised.
oh great now they are starting to sound more and more like EA "Sim City was a success" "Battlefield 4 didnt damage the franchise" etc
Wow that is a response straight out of the "Being EA 101" handbook, you really are trying to burn all the bridges now aren't you... next thing we know there will be an Oculus PR guy on twitter telling people to "deal with it".
Probably because the people you hear doom-saying the VR, such as the ones plastered over the Escapist Forums, are only a tiny, vocal, minority of people who are interested in the product. Most people don't think of Facebook as some sort of grim reaper, killing off anything it so much as touches. Some people just view it as another company, whose main service is a large social media website. Most people, when hearing this news, don't think, "DEATH OF VIRTUAL REALITY, RIP OCULUS, WHAT HAST THOU DONETH TO THINE SELF!!!" Instead they think something more along the lines of, "Oh, cool, now they'll have enough funding and exposure to make the best product they want."
As long as the product continues to speak for itself, I don't think there's any reason not to get it. There is nothing else even close to the rift that's available for purchase and this one has been getting incredible reviews.
Uh... Why don't you let us know in about a month or two if no negative and/or "drastic" changes in sales happen... Otherwise, I'll be cautious until the product becomes more available to the public, thank you...
you mean, facebook rep is above mark zuckberg? because he himself said it in interview with Reuters. I am now saw that you were faster than me on this.
I don't think I'll be buying one. This comic pretty much sums up my fears concerning the Facebook buyout, but mainly because I wear glasses and I don't think the Rift will take into account that not all gamers have 20/20 vision.
The week the consumer product comes out, I'll likely greedily gobble it up pending any reviews claiming that FB has mandatory logins of course. I expect the first release will be exactly what they've promised though.
