Father-Son MechWarrior Costume is Adorably Epic

Ryan Bowen has been planning a father-son MechWarrior costume for years and finally got to do it this Halloween.

For most people Halloween costumes are a somewhat casual affair. You head to Party City, maybe with the kids in tow if you have them, and then you purchase whichever overpriced costume that winds up striking your fancy. For some, however, coming up with a costume is a something that involves a lot of time, effort and, of course, giant robots.

Ryan Bowen, for instance, recently completed work on a father-son MechWarrior costume that is nothing short of awesome. The costume, which was built primarily with PVC, cardboard and zip ties, has apparently been in the work for several years. "When we found out we were having a baby, he got to work," said Bowen's wife in a gallery description on their Imgur page. "Ryan sketched out the rough designs probably two months before Geraint was born. With so much baby stuff coming in the mail, we had plenty of boxes for him to work with, so he just had to buy a few things to make it." Once the frame and shell were completed he fleshed them out with additional detailing sculpted from pieces of cardboard and foam. Bowen also used to hold together the costumes many pieces once had and his son are wearing it.

Speaking with The Escapist said that he was inspired "by that great father-daughter power loader costume from Aliens that went viral" several years ago. "I saw that and thought that a Mech would be perfect for that sort of costume." He selected the Sunder Mech of its "fairly basic" design and because it "has the pilot in the chest instead of the head."

As well done as Bowen's costume is, the finishing touch is easily his 6-month son Geraint who in videos and photos appears to be having nothing short of a blast. Honestly, who can blame him. The idea of riding around in a mech of any sort is something that would make me giddy today.

Now somebody has to build another one and they can have mock battles in the street, no targeting cockpits...

The only thing he did wrong was choosing a Sunder instead of an Urbanmech.

Also, for reference, the Sunder:

The third set of four missile tubes is oh so slightly incorrect, but who really cares.

o_o

that is fucking brilliant.

Awesome. Truly awesome.

Make three more, and you can have a lance marching down the street.
Of course, they'd have to be painted in House Steiner colors; because who else fields Assault Lances for general patrol?

Methinks someone that does Conventions just got an idea...though they might be a bit stymied in mech choice due to...physiological restrictions. (No reverse jointed mechs.)

Damn it, I was going to put off having a kid but I've got to get cracking to be in time for next year.

Ya know, this almost makes me want to have a kid. Then I remember my stance on children is "medium-rare with a good white wine reduction". Still, this is damn nifty.

A 360 ton Steiner Scout Lance? As a Lyran, I take offense to that idea! Its forty tons underweight! Atlas, Atlas, Atlas, and Atlas! Who do you mistake us for, Capellans?

You wound me!
We both know Capellans wouldn't hit 300 tons in a company with their level of impoverishment, let alone 360.

And there's no shame in the Sunder! It's a fine assault mech, even if it lacks the gravitas of the Atlas or the raw power of our own Fafnir (100 ton national treasures those).

Alright, who wants to have a kid with me so I can do something similar?
Seriously, this is awesome, and this is something I might even have to think about the day I get kids :D
Father of the year award, and of course, the kid will have to get this video accompanied by somw MechWarrior games for his 18th birthday!

As long as you hold off on that stance until just after Halloween then you can have your mech-kid and eat it too.

Does it make me a nerd when I could instantly recognise the mech as a Sunder? Mechwarrior 3-4, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, good times good times.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA! That costume is brilliant! XD

There's something hilarious about seeing that kid's grinning face poking out of that mech suit!

Kill the meat, save the metal.

I'm so behind the times. I thought it was a Rifleman.

> No Mad Cat

Son, I am disappoint.

Seriously, Mad Cats have got to be one of, if not the coolest mechs in the MechWarrior universe.

If you can figure out how to wear a costume with reversed knees I will pay you money.

Wear it backwards. Send the money to me via PayPal if you would please.
