Shadow of Mordor Free DLC Adds Option to Play as a Woman

Lithariel Shadow of Mordor

The Power of Defiance DLC has a skin where you can slay orcs as Lithariel.

Warner Bros. and Monolith released a batch of free DLC yesterday for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor that adds some new features, such as the unexpected addition to play as female character.

Talion's story is similar to that of many game protagonists - revenge over the death of his family. Being able to play as a different character - especially one who's a woman - at least makes the game feel a bit different on a surface level. This character is Lithariel, the Warrior Commander of the Tribesmen of Nurn. Daughter of Lady Marwen and Queen of Nurn, Lithariel also wears setting-appropriate clothing not all that different from Talion's.

However, Lithariel is available only as a skin rather than an entirely new playable character. Playing as Lithariel won't give you new abilities or actions. As Lithariel players will fight Sauron's forces through the new Test of Defiance challenge mode where you are unable to revive or use Wraith powers.

The Power of Defiance DLC also includes an Epic Rune called Defiant to the End, which gives an additional Last Chance to re-enter the fight after dying in combat.

An update released yesterday adds the DLC, but only for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. It is not available on PS3 and Xbox 360.

With plenty of people asking game developers add options for inclusivity for women, it's nice to see there's an option to play as war commander Lithariel.

Oh my God, a woman. And one that isn't flaunting massive bouncy cleavage. The SJWs have won, this game is ruined.

...But on a serious note, the article leaves me slightly confused. Can she be played in the main story, even if she is "just a skin?" Or is it solely in these challenge modes?

I hear that she can be played in the story, but that in cutscenes that the skin won't appear. I suspect that the skin might not carry over a voice appropriate for it as well.

thats...really bizare...

at first I was like WHAAAT??

and then I snapped back to the real world and saw unsurprisingly it was an add on/multiplayer/I'm not sure what it is actually

ah well...there's always dragon age

Meanwhile, Ubisoft PR guy heads exploded as they read this article. XD

Anyway, this is kinda neat. More options are always good.

Thats completely ass backwards, gamers generally don't care if a character lacks huge bouncy cleavage but the SJWs soon start whining when one does have massive bouncy cleavage.

Shit man, imagine how much hyper-intensive animation work they had to do. They must be losing so much money releasing this for free.

I can live with that. Not my preferred option, but still.

Well, I was going to get this anyway, eventually, so it's more a perk.

Well, unless you're concerned with reality, that is. I mean, people bitched about Lara Croft's breast reduction, and that one game where the cover art changed the midriff, but sure. Gamers don't care. It's the SJWs who are whining about these things. That are completely antithetical to being an "SJW." Because ponies.

Y dey do dis to myne faevrith gaem?!

I very much like the trend of "free DLC" content. I wanted to take on a challenge within this game anyway, for I found it slightly too easy (but luckily: unforgiving when I did die).

I think that's unfair. Given ACU, it's evident that it really IS hard for Ubisoft to animate characters. :p

One of those is changing a beloved and iconic character, the other is a midriff not breasts and the reason they where upset is the developer got coerced into changing it.

Sure. Let's make excuses for why this is totally different.

Why were none of these people concerned when that "beloved character's" breasts got bigger? I mean, if it's only about changes....

Come now. Does this fool anyone?

Relax... they opted to not include jiggle physics so it wasnt that expensive.

They should have gone with the male/female choice from the get go for the main campaign.

I would actually kinda like seeing a woman avenging her family for once.

That was actually people thinking that the change was sexist because it somehow meant bigger boobs were bad and women should feel bad, or something.

But keep going on your random rants, though they are getting a bit annoying right now though.

Plus, it'd be hypocritical to tell me not to "rant" if you're going to keep lying.

Urr, what? No, what are you talking about? Of course you're free to randomly rant in threads that have nothing to do with what you're ranting about, like this one. You're even free to rant even if it means you're completly in the wrong (like now), there's not rules about ranting, which is good, because that would be dumb.

However, you shouldn't tell people they're "lying" if you get called out when you're talking shit, mate.

Hubblignush:

Which is why I only say that people are lying if they are lying.

Hell, you even contradicted the other guy trying to argue the same thing.

Everyones talking about white women radicals finally getting their way... and here im wishing to play as a robot or a magic golem, or some story in the vein of Data from StarTrek trying to be human in a world where he... you know what? My idea!! *Runs out Apartment then drives to patent office*

Jesus man, I even provided the fucking post where the whole debacle was argued, it's a bit late now to go "menenene, you're lying". Yeah, the other guy got it wrong, dunno, maybe he wasn't around, or misremembered it. Does this chaneg the fact that you made something up and got called out for it, and is now calling other people liars? Don't really know if this adds up.

Hubblignush:

You may have added it after the fact, but it wasn't there before. I can screencap the original message if you want to go to the mat on this one. Regardless, the OP there doesn't make the argument you think it's making. Maybe you should read your own "evidence" before using it. In fact, it's a counterpoint to just what I was saying! Not to mention the sheer volume of straw being beaten out of man-shaped objects.

See, that's lying. Right there.

Of course, if you change the facts, it won't add up.

I wasn't aware that breasts were an integral part of a character?

Surely if we gamers don't care about the lack of cleavage then this isn't a big deal?

Doesn't really make sense in a game with a storyline and an established character.

However, I guess there's nothing wrong with options.

Is it really worth turning this into yet another SJW vs Misogynerd argument over a FUCKING RE-SKIN!? People, calm the fuck down, it's a nice bit of DLC is all. If Roseofbattle wants to phrase it in such a way it's his choice, why doe's every article that mentions the word 'women' have to explode into a bloody flame war?

I'm so tired of this shit.

Cool little bonus. Even if it's just a skin.

Come now. Does this fool anyone?

The same happened with Dantes hair in DMC, in fact the noise was far louder so explain that. It also happened with some of the Sonic games when the characters eyes where a different colour or something, people don't like their favourite characters being changed.

I also remember the SJWs whining about Tomb Raider and drowning out any dislike for the character changes because they didn't like a cutscene shown in the marketing... Oh I don't doubt there where a few forum posters complaining about Laras breast size but thats nothing to compare against a torrent of blogs and attention grabbing headlines because the SJWs believed the cutscene was "misogynistic".

Honestly, I'd prefer if you could just customize like in other RPGs. Games like the Mass Effect series kept you stuck with one particular name (to make voiced cutscenes and the like easier) but you still had a lot of options. Why not do that with Grumpy McDarkbrood in Shadow of Mordor?

That's pretty cool.

I don't want it, but it's nice that it's offered for free as DLC for those who do.

It's also feels like a smart move towards inclusivity.

I'm okay with this. Makes me feel like a woman is doing all the heavy lifting while Talion shows up just for the story stuff.

That's cool, though I would have much rather seen an actual story involving the character rather than a reskin. I wonder if they changed the cut scenes. To match it. Like, can I start a new game and the play the whole game as her.... I'm guess not since she would effectively run into herself in the campaign. I was hoping for DLC with more substance, though at least it's free.

I suppose there is a next generation of Godwin's law: As any online discussion progresses, the potential for SJW/feminists to be mentioned approaches 1.

I saw this article and was like, "Awesome!" and then I read it and I was slightly disappointed. I thought that she would be a completely new character to play as in the story. I realize that is insane--all new voice recordings and whatnot--but still, I had hoped.

But this is pretty awesome nonetheless. I'll be sure to download it when I finally put the game in. Dragon Age is consuming all of my time right now.

Lithariel also wears setting-appropriate clothing not all that different from Talion's.

It's kind of annoying you phrase this as if there was a doubt.

Tolkein's world was pretty much always practical when it comes to things people wear, so it's somewhat obnoxious to have someone drop a 'hurp durp, normal clothes!' in regards to it.

Then again, this entire discussion thread turned into one massive derp-fest, so I guess I'm not surprised.

Ubisoft sitting there going "but... how is this POSSIBLE?!"

Kudos to Shadow of Mordor. Easily the dark horse game of this year.

See, that's lying. Right there.

Of course, if you change the facts, it won't add up.

"Isn't this description of the "new" Lara Croft much more offensive to female gamers in particular, and women in general? It manages to imply that large breasts make a woman less human for starters."

See that? Right there. read that over a few times, and rethink on why you shouldn't call people liars, when the guy who has no idea what he's talking about, is you. This is, I don't even know what, first you made up something, then someone posted direct evidence you're wrong on basically all accounts (except that people actually did complain about the boobsize change, but you were completly and provably wrong on what kind of people and why) and then you have the fucking gall to call other people liars? Just, fucking, what?

What are you actually talking about? You haven't pointed anywhere, or been even close to clear, or pointed to any evidence supporting that anyone but you is talking out of their ass. Are you suggesting that the post I posted, directly to a fully accessible excapist forum post that actually isn't a screenshot, made by a completly different user is falsified? I mean I hope you're not, but Jesus fuck man. If you're not, then you mean that I edited in later evidence for what I was saying, and you made your reply beforehand, which is fair enough, but jesus fuck man, when you've been proven wrong, you don't just keep going and call other people liars just because the evidence was submitted shortly after you made your fucking comment.

This is insane, I'm not even sure what you're on about.

People complained about Lara's new breast size because they want to see big boobs <- So far, you haven't linked anythign saying this, you made it up on your ass. Might be true, but so might everything be.

People complained about Lara's new breast size because they felt it was offensive to women <- Actually provably happened.

You with me where I stand, sugarbumps? This is about as easy to understand as it gets.

The Lunatic:

Isn't the general agreement that Talion is a shit character though? And that when Orcs aren't involved the storyline in Shadow or Mordor just kind of sucks in general?
