Star Trek 3 May Be Fast and Furious In Space

star trek poster

Does the Star Trek 3 director announcement mean we'll be getting Fast and Furious in space? We could be okay with that.

Since the announcement that Roberto Orci would no longer be directing Star Trek 3, Star Trek fans have been waiting with bated breath to find out just who would be filling the captain's director's chair. Long-time Trek fan, actor, and director Jonathan Frakes threw his hat in the ring, but it seemed like a long shot with Paramount rumored to be courting names like Edgar Wright.

And it looks like the long shot hasn't won out (though we are, unfortunately, still not going to see Edgar Wright's take on the franchise) as Fast & Furious director Justin Lin has been named as Trek's new director. Those hoping for a change in tone for the "less talk, more action" direction the rebooted series has taken aren't likely to find it here, but Lin -- who directed Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6 -- has the action chops to make Star Trek the high-octane action series Paramount clearly wants it to be.

Sorry, Riker. We had our fingers crossed for you.

Multi-nacelle drifting!

Excuse me, I've got to go repeatedly pound my head against a wall. When can we get Star Trek to feel like Star Trek again instead of feeling like everything BUT Star Trek?

When you wish upon a dragon ball.

It's like Paramount want their Star Trek movies to underperform.

If I could get the Dragon Balls and summon Shenron I'd wish for every Star Trek movie after Nemesis to have never existed.

So Its likely with this news that I will turn this ST movie off even faster than I did the Second one. If I even bother to try to watch it at all.

Change that statement from Nemesis to First Contact and I can hook you up with a guy who will you sell wishes for the small price of your soul.

oh great. never liked the fast movies since i dont give a damn about cards, and now this guy should be directing star trek? i highly doubt we will have enough diplomatic speeches and intellectual discussions.

You know, I can only think of one worse choice and he's busy making terrible Transformers and Ninja Turtles movies.

Yeah, let's not give it to the guy with loads of experience with the franchise and ask him to "spice it up some"; let's hand it over to someone best known for an utterly different genre.

I almost feel like we're trading lens flares for "space drifting".

Siiiiigh... I guess I'll go call up my short bald friend and that psycho inventor girl.

Did you forget that Uwe Boll exists?

Because if so, I envy you.

Fast & Furious? That's a big NOPE from me that will give me no interest in this movie whatsoever.

Of all the directors, the talented people who have worked with and loved the franchise over the years, did you get the guy who directs the single most generic action movie series on the planet?

We can take solace that this is alternateverse Trek, and not canon Trek.

I really liked the new Star Trek movies... I wasn't aware that people wanted less talking in them. Like, what?

It's as if they are trying their hardest to make these movies as repellant as possible to Trek fans. This just went from a 1 to a none on my interest scale.

In truth, part of me is actually relieved that Frakes won't be involved. Even he could never save this travesty of a timeline, and at least he won't have to take any blame when this inevitably misses the point by about fifty parsecs.

The makers, stars, and new fans have made it clear the nerd fanbase that made them so popular and last so long to begin with aren't welcome in the "cool star trek universe"

Same thing's started to happen with Star Wars.

Well, fuck it. I've got my TV serieseseses and you can't take them away from me!

I wish they would make a Star Fleet Academy TV Series, I think that would rock!

......I'm going to watch the Next Gen episode Darmok, just to spite this rumour.

TBH I don't have too many quarrels with the first one. The second one is a different story though...
Anyway I think that's not pointing in the right direction for me. Considering that my taste in movies seems to not align very well with box-office sales I deduct that this one is going to be a hit... wait what?
I want Star Trek movies of the quality that was The Wrath of Khan, The Undiscovered Country or Frist Contact, you know something that has some action but is also bit meaningful (or pretentious depending on your view). Apparently that's too much to ask.
But who knows maybe Mr. Lin is one talented son of a bitch and just waited for an opportunity to break away from his action stick and will blow us away? - Whom am I kidding...

That's certainly not someone who ever entered my mind as someone to direct Star Trek.

Well, atleast we won't figure out the big plot twist months before production begins. So they won't tell us repeatedly that "no guys it's totally not it!", then make that the twist, because mystery box reasons.

I have never seen a single episode of Star Trek, but shouldn't a Star Trek movie be kinda, you know, LIKE STAR TREK?

Naw brah, cuz liek Dork Trek is totes liek all diplomasnore an' moraliturds lulz. NuTrek is AWESUM!!!1 *guitar solo* for liek propa bros yeah? PEW-PEW-PEW IMMA FIRIN MAH PHAZORZ! lulz

Seriously though, there was some vague glimmer of hope that now JJ "fuck your childhood" Abrams had waddled off to cop a squat over Star Wars, NuTrek(formerly known as JJTrek, and "wtf is this shite and why did I pay £7 to see it?!") would be able to at least rise to the level of a Generations(which was pretty blegh but not as bad as some claimed) or a Final Frontier; instead it seems we're not even getting a Nemesis.

I look forward to seeing the Enterprise "drifting" around a small moon being chased by a ridiculously over-designed alien ship piloted by a being that just happens to resemble a crude latino stereotype...*shudder*

And why not? They've already destroyed the franchise with these terrible reboots, so who cares anymore?

Adzma:

The rebooted Star Trek franchise has been underperforming.

That's why Paramount is installing NOS on the Enterprise.

thinking about it more, i actually wait until JJ is back. doesnt matter if it takes 5 years or more. at least he made a good mix between action and diplomacy.

At least when I watched the Fast & Furious films that Lin directed I can understand wtf is going on in the action scenes, unlike Abrams who in action scenes is a very bad Micheal Bay wanna-be.

Adzma:

You do know that the reboot films have performed far better financially than the originals and even if you take inflation into account 'Into Darkness' crushed 'Wrath of Khan' and 'First Contact'.

People have to realise that the 10 original Star Trek films were not blockbusters and to barely break even is no longer acceptable in the modern film landscape.

What do you mean "may" be? Abrams turned Star Trek into Fast and Furious from the get-go, in a vain attempt to turn it into Top Gun.

I hereby propose a swap: Michael Bay should bring his military-drama boner "experience" to Star Trek, and Abrams should take his ridiculous lens flare and fetish "enthusiasm" for hardware/gadgetry to Transformers.

When we get another Star Trek TV series.

You just chose my reaction for me,thanks!

'Shaka, when the walls fell'

*shakes head*

Edgard Wright or Frakes would have been fantastic, but I'm really not terribly enthused with this guy being chosen.

Not to say he wouldn't be able to pull of action and great visuals, but Star Trek is about characters too, and well....
Yeah, FF isn't exactly Shakespeare, is it?

If anyone needs me I'll be swimming to Tenagra...

"The Next Star Trek may be Fast and Furious in space!"

You know, as opposed to Actual Star Trek.

Having recently rewatched the entire run of Star Trek I'd say something like 80-90% of the episodes are utterly forgettable boring dross. Funnier were the episodes without a consistent moral stance or that undermined the moral stance of a previous episode.

Well that's one way to take a huge dump over three generations worth of cult classics. Are they even trying? Or are they purposefully destroying the entire franchise?

Actually, that's probably it. Some passive aggressive sport jocks wintered over from the 70s are finally getting their revenge on Trek. And making millions by shoving this trite shit down an unsuspecting new generation's throats.

I'm not happy about what's happened to Star Trek; I never imagined it would be worse than what happened to Star Wars. But here we are.

Yes, true, and Star Wars Episode 1 beat Ep 4-6 together by double or so. No solace there, at least not for me. I don't think that's really a valid comparison though, since the later films where only blockbusters because of the legacy of the previous ones. More interesting is whether they performed to expectations; I can imagine Paramount expected even more out of Trek, although that's speculation on my part.

There is that. I was really annoyed that the new stuff was in a YAAR (yet another alternate reality), but now I've come to be grateful for it.
