Batman and The Avengers Get Mechanized in Robo Fan-Art

Artist Justin Currie has produced a series of art pieces re-imagining his favorite heroes as roboticized warriors.

If there's one thing the many disparate breeds of geek can usually concur on, it's that robots have an inherent cool factor. Most would probably agree, in turn, that combining robots with other awesome things is usually a great idea. Just take the work of Canadian artist Justin Currie. For some time now, Currie has been producing a series of art pieces transforming famous heroes from comics, television, film and video games, into robotic warriors that look like they were ripped straight from the brain of our collective inner nine-year old.

Included among Currie's creations are mechanized versions of Batman's rogue gallery, the Avengers, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Link from The Legend of Zelda, Sephiroth and Cloud from Final Fantasy VII and the starting Pokemon from Pokemon Red/Blue among others. Speaking to The Escapist about his art, Currie stated that he was inspired by the re-design work of other creators. "I [started doing] this after seeing the Batman of Shanghai short by Wolf Smoke Studios," he explained. "I distinctly remember thinking, I need to do some character redesigns... how cool would robot versions be?" Beginning with the Batman franchise, he decided to continue into other worlds after his art pieces built a crowd of fervent followers. "I was floored by the overwhelmingly positive reactions and the sheer amount of requests for characters people wanted to see roboticized."

In addition to illustrating his robotic renditions, Currie has also created (frequently amusing) back stories for his art pieces, along with a multitude of specific and strengths and weaknesses. Taken altogether it adds up to one of the niftiest and best fleshed out art projects we've seen in quite some time. Give it a gander and let us know your thoughts. Which illustrations are your favorites and who do you think Currie should transform next?

Go to the trouble of giving Spidey extra arms, but don't go the whole hog and boost him up to eight? Pff, fail, one star, would not view again.

I jest, of course, I always like looking at art like this if only to pick out all the details I may have missed the first or second times

Spiderman! Still ... just an insect, with the six limbs...
Awwww!

Anyway, Cloud and Sephiroth are my faves <3

The overwhelming majority of those are some of the worst character designs I've ever seen. Kudos to him on coming up with the most unreadable visual mess I've seen in some time.

Clearly you must not be a big fan of tetsuya nomura...! Why are they bad designs? they're overly flashy, dramatic and devoid of logic. Isn't that a good thing?

The hearts on link is a nice touch, I want a robot Batman series now :)

At least there is Spinnerette & 1970s Spinnerette.

I'm kind of disappointed there isn't a Scarecrow variant.

Or how Mr. Freeze & Penguin make me wish there was another batman movie where Danny DeVito & Arnold Schwarzenegger take on Adam West & Burt Ward.

Oh if only Warner Brothers had a sense of humor.... And no I'm not talking about the ones with the Warner Sister....

Some of these bots I wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley... Banebot.

But those pokebots were so cute.

But where is Ganondorf bot?

There is.

The Deviantart page has little writeups for each bot as well.

It slightly bugs me that Cloud bot isn't blonde.Makes me think it looks more like Zack.

They're bad designs because he has too many things going on in the images for the eye to immediately recognize what the hell it's looking at. It's too visually busy, and most of the visual details that are cluttering things up are there for absolutely no reason other than to add some extra lines and splashes of colour.

And I'm a big fan of Nomura... from back in the 90's before he started adding belts and buckles, and drawing clothes and armour that make no sense. His designs from back in the days of FFVII were brilliant overall. His recent Batman design tells me that that Nomura was bludgeoned to death, likely in his sleep with a belt buckle, by the imposter who's been wearing his skin since Kingdom Hearts 2 at least.

Something of interest to me is that some of the images the artist felt "no need to identify. They'll know who it is," like the Captain America for example. And others, the artist felt "I'd better make a note of who it is so that they know." Poison Ivy for example. I'm trying to decide whether or not it's a failure on the part of the artist that the characters had to be identified.

I like the designs.

Sounds a lot like Jim Sterling in his video "Batman Is Everything Wrong With Square Enix."

Those are some wicked designs! My favourite is probably the TNMT mecha.

The moment this said "Roboticized", every Sonic SatAM fan immediately cringed.

*looks over towards Sonic and company, who are still shuddering from bad memories of the Robotnik War*

...and so did a few of my friends. *sigh* Seriously, after seeing Chaos Croc's stuff, you guys should have known better...
