Scientists from Movies, TV Ranked by Level of Madness

Mad Enough For You?

Mad Scientists In Article

Dorkly has made a great step forward in the name of science! They've charted 26 of pop culture's favorite scientists by their levels of intelligence and, of course, madness.

The chart plots the scientists across these traits, all the way from poor Zoidberg, who holds the rank for most insane but least intelligent, to the extremely insane and very brilliant Rick of Rick and Morty. In the lower half of the graph,The Muppets' Dr. Bunsen Honeydew stands strong as the least mad scientist with above average intelligence, and Fantastic Four's Reed Richards as the most brilliant, and only slightly mad, scientist charted.

It's impressive to see that such a vast array of doctors and professors from all walks of pop culture have made the cut, including a few often overlooked scientists like Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory. The chart also offers up an interesting opportunity to see which scientists are most alike; my personal favorite neighbors being Dr. Farnsworth and Dr. Krieger. One thing I'm not so certain on, though, is whether Doc Brown should be considered less insane than Poison Ivy.

Who do you feel is missing from the list? Are there any scientists you'd rather see in the coveted "Off Your Rocker/Brilliant" slot? View the full chart below.

But he is just a sweet transvestite.

How is Princess Bubblegum the lowest madness on the chart? She gets really mad and really creepy as the series goes on; this placement only makes sense if you only saw the first season or two.

P.S. Thanks

Zoidberg? Did I miss something?

Also need to add Twilight Sparkle, The Doctor, Doctor Gero, and The Brain (Pinky and the Brain) to the list.

Zoidberg is a scientist? Pretty sure he's just a (terrible) doctor.

Dexter is there, lower right.

So he is, I fixed it and replaced him with Twilight Sparkle ;)

A terrible choice of axis (no such thing as negative intelligence), they should just have put everything on the positive quadrant.

Lucca! Dexter!!! Rick!!!!!

The Brain is missing though...

I was ready to rage when I saw Lucca, one of my first video game crushes.

And then I realized I would have been mad at anything that had Lucca on a chart that wasn't listing Deities.

Ah, Rick. Truly the goalpost of both brilliance and madness.

I guess Hank Pym ego didn't fit in the chart ?

How is Krieger smarter then Farsnworth? Sure, he is more mental since he isnt even old yet but as far as I know he still hasnt created his own doomsday device

Eh, the 4 point chart doesn't work for this as it's common utilization is for two pairs of opposing points. Considering that everyone on the chart is insane and intelligent to some degree a basic 2 axis would have worked fine. I get the idea that this was done this way because the 4 point is somehow "smarter".

Dr. Thadeus S. "Rusty" Venture has to be somewhere on this list (probably around Dr. Wily). Actually, characters from The Venture Bros. alone are enough to blot out the top half.

And why is Wily so far from Dr. Light? I thought Wily was right behind Light in robotics research, plus, the man convinced the world several times that he turned a new leaf, after repeated world conquest schemes. Being the greatest con man ever, he must be well versed in human psychology, too.

It's only a matter of time until Krieger reveals one.

Pretty neat graph. Not sure how I feel about the Madness axis though, since it seems to refer to both "insane" mad and "mad scientist" mad. For example, Zoidberg is "insane" mad but not "mad scientist" mad, and in my opinion, Rick is "mad scientist" mad but not "insane" mad (he's definitely broken, but still sane). And then you have Krieger and Farnsworth, who are both "insane" mad and "mad scientist" mad. I think it'd be neat to see a graph that had "insane" mad on one axis and "mad scientist" mad on the other. Still, pretty cool graph.

And leaving Rusty Venture off of this graph is an unforgivable crime.

Is it just me or should Krieger be higher on the "off their rocker" axis?

Not really. She has dark moments where she has to do morally grey things (Even as a PB defender, I'll admit that) but that doesn't translate to insanity. She's clearly always fully aware of her actions and the larger implications they carry.

I don't really see how Zoidberg is "off his rocker". He's just lonely, miserable, poor, filthy, disgusting, has no friends or social life and is a terrible doctor. Farnsworth is far more nutty than Zoidberg has ever been.

to be fair, one of the later episodes reveals that he's a fairly competent xenobiologist, its just that alien medical knowledge doesn't translate well to humans

No Professor Utonium. This list is incomplete.

Needs Dr. Venture (Junior and Senior), needs Dr. Mindbender (GIJOE), Needs Hououin Kyouma (Stein's Gate), needs ALL of the Ghostbusters (even though Winston's not a scientist), and it DEFINITELY damn-well needs both The Doctor and The Master!

Too brilliant, way too crazy.

Needs Dr. Peyton Wilder...justice has a new face...

It makes me happy to see Dr. Forrester on that chart. It also makes me sad as I miss MST3k. Rifftrax is awesome but it's not quite the same.

Mordin Solus would also fit well on here. I'd stick him pretty close to Farnsworth.

I really do admire this chart, except it needs more Ricks. I'm pretty sure that this just covers Rick C-137 and not the other Ricks, such as Rick J-19Z7, who is considered the dumbest of the Ricks, and would still outclass many of these amateurs.

GENTLEMEN, BEHOLD! I AM NOT ON THIS CHART!

BULLSHIT!

My initial thought was also that Zoidberg was completely sane but unreasonably bad at the job he was assigned. After all, his Doctorate is in Art History, and he is good at that, but he is a terrible physician.

Did you just randomly plot these on here? The amount content creators will make without even trying on this website is outstanding.

Aren't rick and morty basically charicatures of the Doc and Marty from Back to the future anyway? XD

Figures the charicature is both less sane, but also more 'genius' than the original. That's what a charicature is after all...

Still, I'm probably wrong.

That reminds me what about poor old 'often wrong' Soong? Aka the creator of Data in Star Trek...

Hmmm. I'm pretty sure Dr Walter Bishop should be on here somewhere.

Doctor Doom is the smartest guy on this chart, and should be against the right side..

Doctor Light is the most sane (he's completely sane), and should be at the very bottom.
He should also probably be AT LEAST at Dexter's rank of intelligence.

Princess Bubblegum and Doctor Doom should both be at around Dexter's level of madness.
Peebles is just as scary as Doom when you get her going.

Dr. Zoidberg is only about as insane as Professor Farnsworth. It's just that Zoidberg's an idiot.
