The Last Guardian Will (Probably) be at Tokyo Game Show

the last guardian tokyo game show

Team ICO has heavily hinted that The Last Guardian will be at this year's Tokyo Game Show.

The list of games that will be on display for this year's Tokyo Game Show did not include Team ICO's ambitious new adventure The Last Guardian, but a recent Tweet from the developer hinted that it would be making a surprise appearance at the show.

genDESIGN - the folks who are the creative team behind the project, recently Tweeted "We are thinking about how to take Trico to the Makuhari (in a new and different way)." For your information, the Makuhari refers to the Makuhari Messe - the convention hall where Tokyo Game Show is held every year. This seems to be pretty conclusive proof that the game will be in the show, and the accompanying image (which you'll see above) showed a large projector screen of the game, with a shadow of a man holding what appears to be a PS4 controller.

The good news for you guys is that The Escapist will be on-site for this year's Tokyo Game Show, so if The Last Guardian is there, then we will be sure to check it out for you.

It will be nice if this game actually does decide to show up for a change. We've waited long enough.

Why are we still waiting for this game? Don't people understand how to move on from something?

Uhm, you did see E3, right? The game is back on, it's no longer vaporware, and it's looking great. So yeah, people feel confident enough to look forward to this game again, myself included.

Man, it looked the exact same as it did when it died. It may be back on, but it's not gonna be good.

That's in all likelihood because they overestimated the capabilities of the PS3 at the time. It looks the same, because they way it looked back then was impossible for the PS3 to handle. Sony admitted that that very first reveal trailer was not genuine. It was the in-game engine, sure, but it was sped up to look like 60fps.

And honestly, even if it does look the same, it still looks fantastic. We'll have to wait and see whether the actual game is going to be good, but the fact it even still exists the way it does is a miracle.

You must be new to the internet. ;)

Oh, sure, I mean, they deceived us before, but this time they're on the level. What reason could we have to not believe them?

It's always good to have some doubt obviously, but that latest footage looked like gameplay. There didn't even seem to be any sort of fancying up, just 'Here you go, here's some Last Guardian gameplay'. Now again, grains of salt, but for Sony to shelve this game for years knowing people desperately want it, then for them to finally put us out of our agony and show that, yes, this game is still alive and well, and have the footage be "bullshot" or not even releasing the game... I think Sony knows that would cause an epic shitstorm.

So I don't think they would've showed that footage this E3 if it wasn't actual gameplay, and if the game wasn't actually coming out. Anything can still happen ofcourse, just as it can any other game still in developement, but I highly doubt that particular E3 showing was Sony pulling our leg.

Plus I feel like if they were going to pull our leg, they'd have made it look a lot better than the previous one, instead of a small step up.

This needs whole mounds of salt. I saw the trailer, and I just watched it again to be sure. I don't know, I'm still not seeing anything to make me forget the time this spent in development Hell, or the track record of media that has spent that kind of time there. The idea that we should immediately jump to their defense over this is kind of farcical.

I also think Sony knows by now what an epic shitstorm leads to most of the time:

nothing.

Not a damn thing.

I mean, maybe if we weren't the base that rewards Rockstar after two failed launches of the same game, or the one that didn't buy more copies of Aliens: CM than Bayonetta 2, or the base that complained about "bullshots" from Watch_#%@^@$&^%^$&*Dogs and then bought it anyway (9 million is pretty good for a new franchise everyone was going to boycott).

It wouldn't be too out of character of Sony to lie to us simply because they know they will have purchases anyway, and rabid apologists who will defend this to the death. They may not be Nintendo, but they sure have their base.

Putting faith in a company not exactly known for its transparency because the latest trailer doesn't look like a "bullshot" isn't taking things with anywhere near enough salt. If the game comes out and turns out to be good, awesome. But there are no grounds for defending it now and as-is. None.

To be fair, Kingdom Hearts wasn't exactly vaporware, like Half Life 3 and Do-Not-Finish were (and in the case of the later, should have stayed). The main issue with that perception is that people like to assume that the franchise has had absolutely nothing new between 2 and 3, assuming that Days, BBS, Coded, and Triple D were all mini-games or non-canon filler; as if they were the "Link's Crossbow Training" of the series, which is entirely false. Other projects have just been in the way of development for 3, but it's only been 3 years since the last new Kingdom Hearts related project (and if you do include some of the additional remakes and whatnot, then there's been activity every single year for about 8 years straight), as opposed to the, what, 12 years for DNF and so far at least 7 years for A-Boy-And-His-Griffin?

I'm in the "skeptical as fuck" camp with Last Guardian. I believe a bit more that it -might- be coming out soon, but I certainly don't expect the quality of the game to be indicative of the amount of time spent working on it. If it manages to stand on it's own feet I'd be a bit impressed with it, since that's certainly more than Duke could manage, but I'm not expecting much more than that out of Trico, and I only consider that much because of how fucking fantastic Shadow of the Colossus was.

Then again, if Last Guardian comes out as claimed and is not only good but an absolute tour de force that completely dominates every single game of the year list unquestioned by every single critic that comments on it, the few people who speak of Half Life 3 without needing prescription medication to function or that aren't crafting combustible-lemons (or who aren't obviously taking the piss) might be onto something.

...we'll call that one the long shot.

Yeah, I'm not... it's just, remember Starcraft: Ghost?

I want to believe, but in a sane world, Scully's right more often than Mulder.

The thing is though, this isn't a hot commodity. It's an artsy game from a team whose titles sell notoriously bad. Watch_Dogs was hyped to hell as the big new IP by Ubisoft, and Colonial Marines sold on its brand recognition alone. And Rockstar, well, they sell because they're Rockstar.

The Last Guardian on the other hand is going to sell bad regardless of quality. Maybe a bit better since artsy, emotional games have grown in popularity a bit between Shadow of the Colossus and now, but it's very unlikely it's going to recoup its investment.

That E3 showing didn't look like Sony trying to push how AWESOME this game will be, but trying to regain some genuine goodwill. Even going as far as putting Fumito Ueda in the spotlight, making it clear that this is his baby. They were directly targeting the people who know and appreciate Ueda's work (which aren't that many), not going for mainstream hype.

I won't count my blessings till I see someone playing a showfloor demo, but as of as it is I am a hundred times more hopeful now then I was 6 months ago.

I'm actually psyched for the game, even if I won't be playing it any time soon because fuck the PS3, yeah?
