Bethesda Releases Fallout 4 Gameplay Launch Trailer

Finally, for the first trailer they've ever released, they used the female character and voice for some shots.

Well it's about time.

I also highly doubt that their story/writing team is smart and/or good enough to pull either of those off properly.

Zhukov:
And despite myself, despite every cynical bone in my body screeching in protest... I still kinda want to buy it.

Fuck you Bethesda. If only your games were as good as people say they are/

I feel the exact same way. On the upside, even a bad Bethesda game can be good for a fair bit of entertainment!

If it weren't for those I would've thought that you can only play as male characters. Atleast, I thought that was happening for this game.

Still. I'm personally not really hyped. Will buy it 2 years down the line when the game's most broken stuff is patched.
Did the same with Skyrim and that was the best descision I took.

This sums up my feelings pretty well. Bethesda games are never 'great'. Their graphics are ALWAYS outdated at release, their animations are always janky as fuck, and their stories are always flimsy excuses. But damn their sandboxes are nice

I mean name another franchise that the average player spents like 300+ hours playing with all that going on

Hmm, a heavy handed racism subtext and a cartoonishly evil villain who rants about "Mankind's worst enemy is... itself".

Good to know Bethesda's still hiring 14 years olds to write their terrible stories.

I won't be getting this until someone mods out the fucking player character voices though.

Aaaaand most of the Youtube comments are about female character's ass. Stay classy.

I bet they heard our criticism of F3's pussy BoS, so now they are THE EVILEST THING EVER. No grey in your palette, huh Bethesda?

Karadalis:

Ahyes.. it was obsidian.

Allways mix those two up. But yeah obsidian also has alot of experience when it comes to RPGs and better writers. The reason the character was such a blank slate in NV i think was because obsidian wanted to return the aspect of the player deciding who and what their character was, just like in fallout 1 and 2. That leaves the character rather empty in the context of the game world but also doesnt conflict with any pre set characterisitcs.

For example in fallout 4 we know you will be either a father or mother in a loving relationship... kinda hard to imagine someone like that joining arms with organisations like the slave traders or caesars legion (not that they will play any role in fallout 4 anyways but they make a good example) Whats worse is that your character will be a "pre apocalypse civilized" person... who has absolutely zero experience on how live really works in the wasteland.

This is why i presonaly dislike it when game developers slap these things onto "our" characters, either you let me freely create my character or you give me a fully fleshed out character that you created beforehand.. this half and half aproach really doesnt work for me.

Well, even members of Caesars Legion have wives and loved ones. Even slavers. Don't know if that makes them worse people or not when you note what they do. :/

Major_Tom:
I bet they heard our criticism of F3's pussy BoS, so now they are THE EVILEST THING EVER. No grey in your palette, huh Bethesda?

Nope, the BoS still play the role of lawfully good paladins in this game. The big bads are a new group called "The Institute".

Oh. The "malignant growth" sounded like a supervillain speech, and the PC shot down a Vertibird so I assumed... nevermind.

Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngh.

5 more days.

Almost here. Sweet Baby Jesus, the hype is real.

What have you done to me, Bethesda?

I don't even care that the lip-syncing looks like something out of Oblivion.

You've got me.
I'm ready.
I want it.
Take me, Bethesda.
Right here.
On this table.
Fuck the eggs.
DO IT.

they shut the stream down, but I was watching it for awhile. I gotta say, i'll never go to that site again. the chat was the most vile, disgusting display of humans on the internet that i'd ever seen. just seriously trash people... what inspires people to act that way? ugh. I gotta de-internet for awhile...

[actual gameplay leaks]

"Quickly, lets abuse laws to remove completely legal videos of gameplay and instead release our highly edited
"gameplay" video that does not represent the game at all"

Well done bethesda, well done. Also is it possible to write more cheesy trailer naration?

BloatedGuppy:
Those characters models though. We're gonna party like it's 2009.

the entire game looks like we are going to party like its 2009. Seriously though, this looks like an extensive mod to 3, not like a new game.

noobiemcfoob:
I will never understand the vitriol that gets thrown towards Bethesda in these threads. You know every game doesn't have to be tailored to your wants. If you don't like what the game is doing, then voice that opinion by not buying it and quit whining about every detail of a game plenty of people are well aboard the hype-train for. There's nothing cool, ironic or informed about criticizing something someone else loves.

or you know people could voice thier opinion in a forum thread that exists for people to voice their opinion.

Barbas:

Also, that leak article being in violation of federal regulations was disturbing.

I agree, it is disturbing that a company can abuse federal regulations to pull completely legal gameplay footage.

Headsprouter:
I notice now just how form-fitting those vault suits are. Wonder why...

it was pretty much form fitting in fallout 3 as well though. wanted to find an image but the first 20 pages of google are nothing but cosplayers in form fitting suits....

No you can fight the brotherhood in the game, and I've had the end spoiled for me, while not the level of zealotry the BoS displays in new Vegas or earlier fallouts, FO4s brotherhood definitely aren't the shiny good guys from FO3 and can be morally justifiably fought against if you side with the other factions in the game. You get the chance to fuck their shit up if you want to, they just aren't as morally grey as the west coast chapters, who are basically colossal douchebags on the verge of being exterminated by the NCR.

Oh, also, in case it wasn't obvious, there are end game spoilers being spammed on social media and 4chan right now. Best not to go there if you don't want the entire story spoiled. Some are fake but some are also very real.

WANT. WANT. WANT. WANT. WANT.

Fucking university exam on the release day!

So, they did improve them? See, when you're a cynical bastard who always assumes the worst, you can only get pleasantly surprised. Thanks, but I don't go there anyway.

That's funny considering searching vault suit instantly got me this.

And I didn't even say they weren't. But to be fair comparing Fallout 3/NV's female vault suits to 4's is like comparing regular Samus to Zero suit Samus. :L

It's even true for the male ones!

thats a very tiny image, i was looking for a bigger one. my search was for "fallout 3 vault dweller suit".

Well maybe my memory is failing me because i remember a very tight looking suit on my character, but i played it some years ago so maybe i forgot.

'Epic Story' Finding your wife and child isn't epic and I don't want to do it. *Goes back to New Vegas*

I don't think the trailer even mentioned finding your family. Also, you could say "delivering a package isn't epic" about New Vegas.

Except thats not what its about, yes you can choose to do that, but in the beginning your purpose is left to you.

No, although I love New Vegas I have to agree that the story is specifically about "Hey, that guy shot you. Why don't you go chase him down?" How does "chase that guy" differ from "find your dad" from FO3? NV does let you do many other things, but that's no different than FO 3, or 2, or 1... or Skyrim. And as NLS mentioned the whole "dad looking for family" hasn't been confirmed yet and neither has the backstory of whomever the protagonist is. So far the "he's the dad" thing is a theory. And a "leaked" video posted here on the escapist and then removed may have had evidence to the contrary.

One does not go to The Escapist forums to find people commenting positively about much of anything nor when commenting negatively very often having sensible reasons for doing so. The Escapist forums are filled to the prim with negativity about everything, particularly about video games, especially so called "criticism" that most of the time is either outright false such as whining about the absolutely beautiful graphics or massively exaggerated like constant assumptions that the game will be a buggy mess without cause right out of the gate as is the case here. Go to a website like SugarBombed if you want to see a place where people are actually reasonably positive about Bethesda games and video games in general.

The story in every Bethesda game has always been near nonexistent. It's always boiled down to "here's the setting, here's the set pieces, here's why your character is here, now go nuts". The point of every Bethesda game has always been the player doing things and giving their character reasons for doing them, Fallout 4 will be no exception. The only difference with Fallout 4 is that Bethesda is putting in some actual effort at creating and presenting stories that are good on their own, rather than depend upon the player to have the imagination to make use of the setting and set pieces offered properly to create a good story out of Bethesda's in their own heads as they are supposed to do since with all the hatred and meh that Bethesda's stories get the player base apparently consistently misses the point of Bethesda games.

Actually is a back burning thing, you are never explicitly told to do so. Persuing that field even in dialog is mostly optional and it isn't required for a good many quests that you do in the main story and even when you do, you are allowed your own reason for doing so not railroaded into a certain set reason why you did something

Isn't that the plot of the original Wasteland (which Fallout draws heavy inspiration from)? Isn't that plot further continued in Wasteland 2?

What is it with artificial life replacing mankind after we drop the bomb? Don't we have enough problems with giant insects/arachnids that we have to add AI's with delusions of grandeur?

It very well might be. I played a bit of Wasteland 2, but it was very shallow and devoid of atmosphere for me personally. I have enough trouble dealing with the "Chosen One" PC in Fallout 2, let alone the crap for 3 and 4 where the entire thing is basically LOOK YOU'RE RELATED TO PEOPLE FEEL EMOTIONS PLZ

No, it's railroading. There's clues at every single stop along the way that you would have to intentionally avoid to miss, meaning you would have to know it was there to miss it. And if instead of track down Benny you decide you would rather just rather head north and hit the casinos... YOU WILL BE MURDERED BY CAZADORS AND DEATHCLAWS. Your choices end up being follow Benny, or DIE. Really the only choices you have is how many sidetracks you will follow before confronting Benny at the strip.

Stumbling off the beaten path and being murdered by powerful enemies is a FO1/2 thing that was heavily requested by fans.

Taking the longer route does not require you to stop at every checkpoint along the way. The "safe" route is designed to let your character see a large portion of the Mojave before getting to New Vegas, not railroad you through the main quest. You don't have to interact with Manny Vargas in Novac. You can certainly bypass Boulder City and the Khans encounter. You get a quest update the first time you enter the Strip... and that's it. You never have to go into the Lucky 38 if you don't want to. You can enter the Tops and never interact with Benny. If anything, the criticism should be "stop holding my freaking hand. I KNOW WHAT I AM DOING" not "STOP RAILROADING ALREADY". All of these design choices are so you don't lose the main quest.

Finally, if you have played the game a few times, it is entirely possible to travel north from Goodsprings and not get murderized.

Basically what this guy said precisely. Thanks man for covering that! So I read a few reviews and it appears the main quest was exactly what I was thinking it was. :I I so wish Obsidian was handling this not Bethesda
