Final Fantasy's Cloud Strife is The Next Smash Bros. DLC Fighter

Final Fantasy's most iconic hero Cloud Strife will be the next Super Smash Bros. DLC fighter.

Nintendo capped off its Nintendo Direct presentation this morning with a surprise announcement: Cloud Strife, the iconic Final Fantasy VII hero, will be the next DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros.

From the look that we got of him, it seems like Cloud will be a melee fighter-type character, in a similar vein to Ike and Marth. He uses a variety of his special attacks from the game, and appears to be able to summon other characters to help him out.

It also looks like Cloud will come with his own Final Fantasy-themed stage.

We're not sure when Cloud will be released, but we can probably expect him to cost the usual $5.99 per platform or $6.99 for both.

This was so far out of left field. A really neat addition to Smash, even if Cloud himself has barely appeared on Nintendo consoles. However, I think it is pretty fitting. Final Fantasy has a very strong history on Nintendo consoles, and Cloud is one of the faces of the series. So it makes enough sense.

I can finally the epic Link vs. Cloud battles I've always wanted! :D

Now for the final question, I still wonder who won the ballot? I guess we will find out in December.

Whoa...I did not see this coming O_O

Man, might have to get a Wii-U for X-Mas if they are literially spec'ing Smash Bros after stuff that appeared on Death Battle XD

touché Nintendo, I guess I should get to buying some DLC.
It will be nice to invite eight of my closest friends over and have a smash party again.

OT: I like it, he looks like he fits right in, especially against the Fire Emblem characters.

STILL NOT BAYONETTA >:(

For real, I was not expecting that. FF7R for NX now possibly? And if they make a Cloud Amiibo, Ninty and Squeenix could make a absolute shitton of money.

Whoa whoa whoa what this all about Final Fantasy 7 Remake coming to the next Nintendo Console?

Just speculation on my part, based on that it would seem slightly strange that Nintendo would have a character in Smash Bros that hasn't been on their console (well besides Theatrhythm). It's by no means confirmed, or even hinted at by Nintendo.

Well now Cloud is in Smash Bros he can finally have his Rematch against Link for beating him in Death Battle ;)

Smash Bros is slowly becoming one of those sprite comics made in like 2005.

Meh, I'm okay with this. Final Fantasy 7 is the only game in the series people seem to care about (though this pick might to placate fanboys wanting a FF7 remake... or maybe I'm just too cynical).

Still can't wait to see who won the ballots, though! December feels so far away...

Why..?
No. Seriously. Why?

This almost seems to be rewriting history. FFVII was moved away from N64 because the system used cartridges which couldn't hold the game. Having Cloud appear on a Nintendo console, when he has never been on a Nintendo console ever, seems really weird. I could have seen Terra, Locke, Shadow, Cecil, Kain, and probably a few dozen others, but not Cloud. It just doesn't make logical sense to me.

Who's next? Sly Cooper? Master Chief?

You know everyone has been saying it would come to Xbox One. However, I always found that to be pretty presumptuous. Final Fantasy 7 has no history on the Xbox console, and the franchise as a whole barely has one. I've always considered the FFVII Remake to most likely be a PS4/PC exclusive. However, this announcement does make me wonder if it might be PS4/PC/NX game.

You know what's hillarious about all this?
Sony tried to get Cloud for Play Station All Stars and failed.
Nintendo managed to do it and the remake isn't even coming out on their system!

I would have went with Tifa, because Smash does have a lot of sword wielders already. (Also, I'm a fan of attractive brunette girls who can suplex giant robots.)

Saltyk:

At the rate they're going, King Harkinian from the Unholy Triforce will probably appear in Smash NX.

Final Fantasy VII is my favorite Nintendo game.

...oh wait.

Cuz, you know, this is the character from Square Enix that we wanted in Smash. I certainly can't think of anyone else that would fit that bill. I have Geno idea who else could have been here.

Nintendo, Shantae or we riot in the mii plazas!

Nintendo HAS said that every smash fighter is getting an Amiibo.

CLOUD AMIIBO ASAP PLS.

What in the ever loving fuck. This pull is more random than Snake in Brawl.

CrazyGirl17:

The only thing that will placate people is the actual game when they release it 3 years from now (if Nomura can actually finish a game for once). This'll just instill false hope in people who now expect the remake to also be on the NX. (Not that that couldn't happen, but this sure as shit isn't a sign of anything like that.)

November 12, 2015, shall be remembered as the day FF7 fans the world over collectively creamed their jeans.

...Hm.

Look, I'm all for this news - it's great, it really is. Having Cloud in Smash feels like a big win, especially over All Stars. The Midgar stage looks absolutely bonkers and a heap of fun to play in, and overall I'm throwing money at the screen.

However, like a proctologist at 4:55 on a Friday, there's a lingering but. A big one.

How did you guys miss that, not only has the arcade version of Dissidia spoiled beginning roster, two new summons and the Road to Narshe as stages, but it's also been given a release date of 26th of November? How? This game is big - the killer app of the PSP is getting an arcade update that's had characters teased from everything from Y'Sholta (sp?) from FF14 to freaking Razma from FF Tactics. And it's based on the PS4 hardware, so the odds of it being released stateside are pretty good given time to bulk up the roster!

I'm not angry... just kinda disappointed that you're all over the common news, while the truly interesting stuff is just forgotten.

As for Cloud, this really was so far out of left field that he wasn't even considered in most of the polls.

I personally think it's a good addition, I'd be more upset if he was the only one getting in, but there's at least 2 more fighters being announced in December.

Also his moveset and the Midgar stage, I don't know about you guys but it actually seemed kind of fun.

Objectable:

Okay, that made me laugh. It's like Smash Bros already slapped them once and them they decided to slap 'em again for good measure. The only way this could more hilarious is if they put Dante from Devil May Cry in it.

Anyway, it amazes once again at how the guys at Namco and Nintendo are so stringent with getting every detail about the character right. This is genuinely what I would think of with an HD version of Cloud. The outfit, the hair, even his personality seems to be based more on the ACTUAL Cloud (i.e. the morose, but not mopey version from FFVII Nomura and Square have completely forgotten about) than the version people THINK existed. Even the presentation does well with bringing back PS1 style menus and the Midgar stage definitely feels like FFVII's most iconic locale.

Really, it would have been better if it were just a chocobo.

Not that I'm complaining, and I haven't played FFVII or SSB since Melee but..."what?"

Fucking Cloud... Really?!?

That is neither Geno nor any character from VI. You know, the actual Nintendo characters.

... You do start to wonder sometimes don't you?
With all these 3rd party characters showing up in Smash Bros...

I mean, Sonic wasn't that weird. (witness Nintendo outright helping fund a Sonic game not too long after),
Snake was a bit bizarre, given very few MGS games have been on Nintendo systems.

But... These days... Ryu? Pac Man, Mega Man...

Still, Final Fantasy was Nintendo exclusive once upon a time... Just... Doesn't make a huge amount of sense to choose the one character in the series that most explicitly represents the end of that era...

Although I guess the fact that the Crystal Chronicles games kept being released suggested the relationship between Square Enix and Nintendo can't have been that terrible...

And really, that's what counts in the end for stuff like this.
Can the companies that own the characters agree to allow this?

The history of the characters does have some effect, no doubt, but that's almost certainly a far bigger factor...

Pac Man actually had a reason to be in the game, as Namco helped make Smash 4.

... Huh. Did not know that.
Though, I can't say I'm all that surprised.

Anyone remember the 'triforce alliance' back in the days of the gamecube?
F-Zero GX is the major result of that. (along with an arcade version of F-Zero)

the 'Triforce', in that (aside from being a zelda reference) refers to it being an alliance between Nintendo, Sega, and Namco

So... They have history.
Come to think of it, back when the N64 was a thing that was still being referred to as 'project reality', there were renders of a silver pacman being used in promotional material...
>_>

And yet, he was on a Nintendo console, kinda... If you count the GBA in 2004 as well as the game he made a "cameo" in, of course...

OT: So, no Tifa's fist? Oh well...

Other than that, that amiibo figurine's gonna be selling like fucking hot cakes in 2016(?)!

My 10 year old would have creamed his pants over this.

I'd give my left nut to see Geno return in a meaningful way :(

Wait wait wait...who's that other character in photo 5?

Also, cool, no problem here with Cloud making it in.

Well...with Final Fantasy Explorers coming in AND having a mechanic where you can play (sort of) as many of the protags from previous FF titles, that explains his inclusion.

Well, they DID confirm DRAGON QUEST 7 coming to the 3DS, so who knows?

Not a Final Fantsy fan, at all, but this is still friggin' sweet.
Now to wait for Bayonetta, Rayman, Snake and Adam Jensen.

Sky's the limit now! ;)

November 12, 2015, shall be remembered as the day FF7 fans the world over collectively creamed their jeans.

What? No? Why would Ps1 RPG fans be creaming their pants over a character being introduced into a brawl game on a non-Sony console. I seriously doubt there's much crossover between FF7 fans and smash brothers fans. The style of games are worlds apart.

Also I picture FF7 fans more as shorts wearers.

It kind of makes sense. Ever since FFVII debuted, Cloud has been the man that basically kicked Nintendo's ass.
Now he's here to literally kick Nintendo's ass.

Though if you had asked me, I would have been sure Squeenix would have given them Erdrick instead. Dragon Quest is still great, it could use a big push with the new games coming to America, and Erdrick has NES cred.

Smash Bros. has DLC now? Too bad, even Nintendo finally caught the downloadable content plague. Looks like this will be the last Smash Bros to have more characters than the previous one, after all it's more profitable to sell people the game and hold off all the interesting new content for DLC. And 6 bucks per character?! That's crazy expensive, if you buy all 5 DLC characters that's half the price of the game!
