Kerrigan Voice Actor Dropped From StarCraft 2

Glynnis Talken, the original voice of Sarah Kerrigan in StarCraft, has confirmed that she will not be returning to StarCraft 2.

Blizzard announced in November 2008 that the roles of Kerrigan and Jim Raynor were "up for grabs," according to a BlizzPlanet report, despite both Talken and Robert Clotworthy, the voice of Raynor, expressing interest in returning. In fact, Talken had reportedly approached Blizzard at a previous San Diego Comic Con and was hired to reprise the role; she provided voice work for the initial StarCraft 2 promo trailers at BlizzCon and her IMDB page also lists StarCraft 2 as her most recent role.

That would appear to be erroneous, however, as she has confirmed with StarCraft Legacy that Blizzard has declined to bring her back for StarCraft 2. "Blizzard just gave me my Dear John phone call," she said. "Basically, it was 'We can still be friends - we just don't want to see you anymore.' Ha ha! Ah well...that's showbiz."

Talken has a long history of voice acting with Blizzard, with roles in Diablo, Diablo 2, StarCraft and the Brood War expansion, Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne and World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. Clotworthy's work with Blizzard is so far limited to the StarCraft franchise but he has considerable other voiceover experience in the game industry, appearing in games like EverQuest 2, Tekken 5, Kingdom Hearts 2, Lair and others. There's been no word yet whether he'll return to the game or not, but at this point it doesn't look very likely.

So....why the hell would Blizzard do that?

You know, I was thinking the same thing. Kerrigan is so iconic. . . it just seems strange.

I gotta say first the original voice of Arthas didn't take the WoW voice acting job because Blizzard offered less money when he did Warcraft 3 and now this. I gotta say this is so sad considering you need good voice actors if you really want to sell the game on speech to enhance the mood and also to keep consistancy.

Kerrigan was a great character and like Ayame it is sad to see a great character go from a decent voice actor to a horrible voice actor to make the character sound like a valley girl or something even more insane like....a woman who tries to pull of an english accent in gamestop training videos.

That's up for speculation. Maybe they asked too much ?
I just hope the topic doesn't get flooded with "I hate Blizzard. Won't buy SC2" comments.

I'll probably still buy SC2, but it'll be disappointing not to hear her voice again, the person replacing her will probably sound nothing like her, on the bright side, that means it will sound hilariously bad or even more awesome.

I wonder where they go to look for voice actors anyways? I never really figured out how to get in to that business.

Royalties.

Same thing that happened to the actor voicing Niko in GTA4 :(

Noooooooo...!

First they change Raynor's voice actor, then they split the game into three separate games, and now they drop Kerrigan's voice actor? What the hell is Blizzard doing?

Probably because the CEO of the company they merged with is a carpetbagging ass who only cares about money and sequels.

Because they're three brain cells shy of being Retarded.

A shame. She was a great voice. I hope that whoever they get to replace her can fill those shoes, but they're mighty big :/

Is that a requirement on the application for Blizz?

sad... just sad

Arthas...Raynor...Kerrigan...next is DECKARD CAIN!! BEWARE!!!! FOR THE END OF TIME IS HERE! Not even the Doctor can save us this time! :(

Well it's a good thing Games aren't made of just voice acting alone then isn't it?

Seriously, As much as I appreciate the argument that the game has fully established character with certain attitude, personalities and voices, so screwing with that formula is going to fuck people off.

but when people consider possibly the greatest injustice in gaming then I think it's gone just a little too far.

Sure I understand you're all trying desperately to cling on to that authentic starcraft mood/feeling that you had while playing the original.

But You're forgetting, it ISN'T the original Boohoo, Kerrigan's voice will sound different!

I guess it's really not that bad considering it could have been much worse news.

Like: "The new installment of Starcraft will not be featuring Space Marines, instead they will be Pikmin."

Or evn worse for you people: "Yeah, that whole Starcraft two thing? Sorry, we've decided to make a sequel to WoW now, I know, who'd have thought eh?"

Seriously, As much as i try to udnerstand the problem here, it's not that bad.

Stay a while, and listen...

Hmmm, odd indeed, at this rate my grandchildren will be playing Starcraft 2...

Lamesauce. I liked the voices of Kerrigan and Raynor. They should have brought them back.

Blizzard being a dick to its fans and franchise? [sarcasm] Stop the presses! [/sarcasm]

Terrible, terrible, news!

They're not gonna be happy until they butcher this damn sequel are they? I've read blizzard talking about wanting to "re-imagine" the characters. What are they George Lucas now? Can we expect them to remake SC1 with Wookies and imperial walkers? [/sarcasm]

A petition has been started. Its our only hope now.

I would ask that you all sign it, pass it on to friends, post it on forums, etc

Unfortunately, because they are mostly comprised of easy-to-click agreement without any real detail, most online petitions are pretty much impotent. I wish you all the luck in the world, but rarely do online petitions do anything to change developers' minds. Actual written letters, blogs, and long discussion threads, on the other hand, have a bit better chance.

Voice actors are sometimes hired out through studios that have "pools" of them working under the same banner. Some of them work solo, but many work under the same company so as to increase likelihood of being hired as a package for a company with multiple needs.

I'm sad to see the original Kerrigan voice to be gone. Starcraft 2 will obviously be fine - after all, a voice or two in the grand scheme of things is hardly important to the game's success. The appeal just gets diminished a bit. Those decrying Bliazard and doomcasting the end of the world due to this though - those are the same people who will have forgotten this "injustice" in a week's time.

I must say Blizzard is acting rather dickish with the latest in their franchise.

They're throwing away all the great talent that was responsible for their success in the first place.

Just when they were regaining my love, they had to go and fuck it all again.

Let me play the devil advocate:

I would surmize it is because by this point Kerrigan is so mutated she bears no resemblance to a human. Don't be suprised if she's a giant centipede or something.

Because we don't have the technology to synthetically alter voices. Right.

Someones being a negative nancy... your assuming she'll have a voice, or a speaking role.

I dunno. When I bought Star Craft and eventually Brood Wars, I played the campaigns so seldom that I can hardly remember her voice in the first place. I played multiplayer and vs CPU skirmishes more than anything. I dunno, playing the game for the game itself seemed a more viable use of my playing time than listening to the people talk repeatedly. Play the campaign once, get to multiplayer. Multiplayer lacked Kerrigan. I hardly heard her voice, for me, she will not be missed (assuming I even buy SC2, since I hold no interest in the game at this point honestly.)

I always thought Kerrigan had a kind of sexy voice. I'm kinda of disappointed to see a RL pic of her. As for why she isn't reprising her role in SC2, it would have to be financially motivated. If she is a veteran with Blizzard, should would be asking for appropriate remuneration. It would be much cheaper to get someone who might be less experienced.

Will this affect my reaction to playing the game. No. Probably not. After playing Dawn of War 2, I have pretty high expectations for SC2 now though.

Trying to make as much money as they can?
When an actor or actress is in a game or movie, and that production does REALLY well. They expect to make more money for the second installment, it's only logical. So if Blizzard gets someone who they don't have to pay that extra cash to then they save money. Simiarly, if you have to buy THREE games instead of one they make more money. Or should I say, if you HAVE to buy three games . . . because any game can have an expansion pack, but not everyone will buy it. But if the entire game is split into three then sales are probably more guarenteed for the 2nd and 3rd installments.

A different guy said:

What? Should she be wearing a red low cut dress to her voice recording session? Get her hair done up at salon before she goes in? Have a make-up artist working with her full time? Voice actors are paid for their voice, not their looks. Similarly telemarketers and adult chat lines are paid for their voice too. I mean hell, movie productions have doubles for actors all the time. Sometimes there might be a close-up of someone grabbing a cup of coffee for example, and rather than have the actor they have some "hand model" do it because the actor's hands are too damn ugly. Different people have different talents.

That being said the voice actor for Kerrigan looks average. Though her paycheck for even the usual gig is probably a lot higher than anyone who visits this forum that's for sure.

I understand that they're trying to make a quick buck off the name, I should have added to my post earlier instead of just have a vague "What the hell are they doing". It is a shame really, and sad to see them try to turn StarCraft into a cash cow like WoW, although not surprising.

Well how much love went into their two main franchises anyway? From what I heard, they were originally just rip offs of Warhammer and Warhammer40K when Blizzard couldn't get the actual rights from Games Workshop. The dude in the SC2 trailer couldn't look more like a 40K Space Marine if he tried.

Honestly, I never even knew Warhammer existed until the PC games came out. I know it has been around for a long time as a table top game, and I wont deny that a lot of the ideas in WarCraft/StarCraft weren't exactly original. That's obvious just by looking at some of the units that were inspired from movies/books/games.

Maybe Blizzard really didn't put as much love into the games as I had always believed, but it definitely got a lot of love from its fan base it is now metaphorically slapping in the face.

I prefer to think the Queen Bitch of the Universe would do a tad more than gurgle and hiss at me.

I think they've said quite a few times before that they wanted to have other actors for the roles, because the writer (or whoever it was) imagined them as having other voices originally.

I doubt a slight pay increase for a few actors does much to their budget, especially since sales projections must be decidedly high.

She speaks in the trailers, and all her concept art shows her as still mostly human.
