Capcom Explains Sagat's Absence in Street Fighter V

Street Fighter V

Sagat won't be in the new Street Fighter because there are "too many similar characters".

Street Fighter V made lots of Street Fighter fans very happy when it was announced last year. However, now that we know the full character roster, as well as the first wave of DLC characters, one subset of fans are quite disappointed: Sagat mains. Sagat has been a mainstay of the series, appearing in every main Street Fighter title since the original. However, he will not be in Street Fighter V, and now Capcom has explained why.

"It's because there are many characters that perform similarly," developer Yoshinori Ono told Famitsu. "For this launch and its next update, we wanted to have a good balance of characters. Since we didn't want to just blindly increase the number of characters, it was a bitter decision that had to be made."

But don't lose hope, Sagat fans, for while the muay thai expert won't appear in the game at launch, "I understand that there are also many who wish to see other characters besides Sagat, such as Blanka and more. There's a possibility that we may add more characters in some form later, so please look forward to that," said Ono.

He confirmed that there will be no additional characters released in 2016, aside from the six previously announced (Alex, Guile, Ibuki, Balrog, Juri and Urien).

Good, we all still have nightmares of Vanilla Sagat back in the first version of SF4.
That and I don't know what they could do with his moves in order to make them more interesting, I mean, he has 2 fireballs and there is next to no difference between them aside from the height at which he shoots it.

Yea we wouldn't want a bunch of characters with similar moves that aren't Ryu, Ken, Dan, Akuma, or Gouken

While I know what you mean, Sagat is actually a lot more of a Shoto clone then even Dan is.
The only thing that really sets him apart would be his Tiger Knee but even then, it can be compared to the Hurricane kick.
That and even Ryu has more differences in his fireballs then Sagat.

Dang it, Capcom, including someone who has been in every main entry is not "blindly increasing the number of characters." He's iconic; omitting him would be like omitting Luigi from Smash because he's too much like Dr. Mario.

P.S. Thanks

They could have just said ryu killed him or something, make a cool little story. Just not having him for no reason annoys me a little.

Nah, Ryu wouldn't do that.
Dan maybe.

Correction: Sagat did not appear in Street Fighter III. (Guess that goes for the article as well.)

He doesn't appear in SF5 because by now in the lore he retired from fighting presumably.

Read: 'we could implement him at launch, but will instead charge for him later as dlc.'

Nice work Capcom.

Good move decreasing the number of shoto style characters. SF5 has done a good job making Ken feel different from Ryu, and really Sagat's niche (fireball, uppercut, slow, long range) is much more suited to a new character than rehashing the same Ryu storyline we've had for 25 years.

From a marketing perspective, the face of the franchise is 90% Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li; those are the guys you want on the box art, you want them to be used on streams, and you want them to be special. If you want Ryu's super fireball to be awesome, you can't have 5 other characters with super fireballs. If you want Ken's uppercut and hurricane kick to be awesome, you can't give Sagat better versions.

WHERE IS ELENA?!

Pls Ono no one except you wants Blanka in the game

If anything Dr. Mario should not be in the game and merely be an Alt. Costume for Mario.

"Slower, heavier Mario" is hardly enough distinction for a new character, especially when it translates into "worse Mario". Its just like how people feel that Lucina and Chrom should've just been Alt. Skins for Marth, rather than making Lucina a separate, but shittier version of Marth.

Pretty much everyone seems to prefer his replacement; Laura.

For reasons unknown.

Now if you knew anything about SFV, you would know that all DLC can be purchased with in game currency. Meaning while you could pay real money to buy characters you could also use " fight money" to buy DLC.

Apart from Evil Ryu or Oni. They'd be okay.

Yeah if they wanted free publicity they should have made up a cool reason that like hes undergoing training and comes back as a boss later on.

They could have dropped Birdy because no one will play that retard. That is unless they give him some cheap ass moves that make him great in tournaments.

Why the hell is Alex DLC instead of being base game?
Seriously, the only reason to put Zangief in over him is to appease the people who grew up with SF: II, and who cares about those guys?

Hi yes is Q back? No? Shut up, and I'm keeping my money.

Really he's the only way I'll put money into Capcom's hands for a fighting game

Sakurai already said that Dr. Mario, Dark Pit, and Lucina (where the heck are you getting Chrom from; he's not playable at all) weren't even going to be in the game at all. Is "No Slot" really better than "Clone Slot"? 'cause frankly, I'd rather them give us a free character than just be a costume. When always promised full Quality no matter how much Quantity, more Quantity should be better than less Quantity, at least from a mathological standpoint.

People wanted Chrom, but wanted him to be an Alt. of Marth, just like they wanted Lucina to be an Alt. of Marth. Its illustrating the same problem.

They've could cut Lucina, Dr. Mario and Dark Pit, made them Alts. for Mario, Pit and Marth, then gone and added three new characters like Hector, Bayonetta, Django, Shantae, Ryu, Snake etc.

Instead they wasted 3 character slots on clones, two of which are notably inferior to the character they're cloned from.

I was one of the people who believed that, too.

But see, there's a difference between a bonus slot and a wasted slot. And again, Sakurai had already explained this.

When Crapcom (or other "this company sucks here, but usually Crapcom") has spare time before game development, in the past you'd find them making On Disc DLC of content they'd already finished and decided to lock away. That's what Nintendo did with those 3 characters. Except instead of charging us for them, they left them in the game as is.

Developing entirely new characters from whole cloth would have taken too long by that point in game development, unless they delayed the game. But they didn't feel like just sitting around when they could plug in more content. So they kept adding in little things, such as those 3 clones. I don't see why people don't enjoy free gifts when the alternative is no gift at all, since the gift giver didn't have enough time to prepare an additional super huge gift without being late for the gift giving entirely.

I'd have loved for them to have developed more full characters. I bet they could have found a way to put in the Ice Climbers on 3DS if they had more time to work on it. Wolf-Link (with Midna on his back) would have been an exciting character. King K Rool deserves more than just a costume. Dixie Kong or Kranky could easily represent. The "Ridley's Too Big" excuse can screw itself. Krystal (with her Staff) had great potential for her own being. They could have had more F-Zero representation.

But do I think that the content we did receive reflects a proper amount of effort made into the game, and is worth the price I paid for it, clones and all? Absolutely.

Besides, Bayonetta is on her way now. And Snake probably didn't return because of Konami. They could have used most of his Brawl assets and put him in easily if they were allowed, I bet.

Kinda exactly how I feel about Oro. You start dragging in characters from Alpha and 3, I want back the one arm killer.

Aerosteam:

That makes sense. The old tiger is getting a bit long in the tooth these days and he's learnt that revenge solves nothing.
