The Divison PC Port Was Kept "In Check" With Consoles, Says Ubisoft

Ubisoft says that while it could make the PC version look nicer, it would be unfair to the console editions.

Today, an Ubisoft developer has come out and admitted what people have assumed to be the case about PC versions of multiplatform titles for a long time: consoles are holding them back. In a preview with Team Epiphany, a developer for The Division stated that while it is nice to have a dedicated PC development team this time around, the game still has to be kept in line with the console releases.

"One good thing about The Division is we've always considered the PC as a separate platform," said the developer. "We do have to keep it in check with the consoles; it would be kind of unfair to push it so far away from them. But it's been good having a dedicated PC build for this game."

That said, the PC version of the game will still come with quite a few exclusive features, including many more graphical options that take advantage of high-end PCs. Additionally, Xbox One and PS4 users will also be given a suite of graphical options (though not quite as substantive), allowing players to choose whether they want shinier graphics, or a higher frame rate.

What do you think about this? Should Ubisoft just let the developers of the PC port go wild and make the game as good as possible? Or is keeping it in line with the console releases the only fair thing for everyone?

Following multiple delays, The Division's release is now scheduled for March 8.

As a filthy console peasant I have no problem with this.Hell charging console owners more for the same game is enough of a dick move without charging more for an inferior version

So enforcing platform parity on top of the news that they've changed their TOS so that all mods of their games are their property. I mean, it's not like Ubisoft doesn't have a history of hating PC users, so all this does is confirm further confirm that hate.

Ubisoft is getting close to becoming the new EA but they aren't quite there yet. They'll need to kill a few more beloved franchises before they get there. They're certainly putting in the work though.

As a multi-console gamer, as in I have a gaming PC, PS4, Xbox One and WiiU (on top of older consoles), why do PC gamers keep buying Ubisoft games? Like seriously, I ask this, why?

They've made it perfectly clear they don't want YOUR money.

Edit: To elaborate- They've made it clear since Assassin's Creed: Unity that PC gamers will get the base version while PS4 and Xbox One gamers get the best of the best support. Eventually, modders will fix it, eventually. And that is bad- that means they can keep releasing trash and PC gamers who either don't care or have no taste will keep buying their games. And the cycle will repeat every time.

This sounds like a fairly normal port, no? Dedicated team doing the port, better graphics on PC but not to ridiculous levels. Not sure this is news. Parity with the console version means shit like same graphics as on console, 30FPS lock etc...

MetalDooley:
Hell charging console owners more for the same game

that's because there are royalty fees for developing console games, they pay nintendo/microsoft/sony for selling on their platform, hence the cost being higher.

is enough of a dick move without charging more for an inferior version

inferior version? it's due to the hardware being inferior in the first place, you bought inferior hardware (which is fine, that's your choice) but don't complain when your game is inferior to other/objectively more powerful platforms. It'd be like me getting mad that my android version isn't as good as your xbone/ps4/wiiU version.

OT: once I heard more about the game I wasn't interested in the first place, really didn't sound like my kind of game, plus I can't stand paying full price for these kinds of games, it'll die quicker than destiny and ubisoft will double their profits by making division 2 *slightly more pixels and boston edition*

Based on the OP, it seems like it's "upgraded version compared to the consoles, but not an ultra-deluxe edition."

Which makes sense to me, honestly. Still, it's Ubisoft. Odds are that this will be one of the lest controversial "problems" with this game.

EDIT: on the other hand, graphics option for consoles? What black magic is this!?!

Yeah, no. You have that PC crew make that bitch look as fine as possible. Screw making consoles players feel better about their purchase. They knew they purchased something that does not have the same running power as a PC, no point in hurting PC players because of that.

P.S. This is coming from someone who plays primarily on console and only bought a current gaming PC a month ago.

Umm, Steve why didn't you link the video team epiphany made as the source? 'Gaf didn't do shit for dick outside of giving you a forum thread to read. I know that it appearantly seems to be your job to cross post topics from a forum, but the least you could do is give credit to the people actually doing the work.

I mean your article is basically this: "Escapist: these guys made a video! Source: Neogaf ---> Neogaf: these guys made a video! link to Youtube"

Or are the cretins at neogaf considered a proper source (yeah right) while a youtube channel isn't?

I wonder when you're going to start making articles about the monthly NPD threads.

OT: How is it unfair to take full advantage of hardware potentially several times more powerful than consoles?

I guess that it does sound better than saying "we cheaped out on making bigger improvements".

MetalDooley:
As a filthy console peasant I have no problem with this.Hell charging console owners more for the same game is enough of a dick move without charging more for an inferior version

It's still unfair. People who play on 150 dollar laptops can't play the game as well as a PS4, yet they still pay 60 for it. They should downgrade the console versions so that people may play it on their shitty laptops or don't charge full price for it.

Otherwise their feelings might be hurt because the thing they bought isn't as strong as a thing that costs twice as much.

I don't think you thought through your sentiment at all.

Also, what are you on about with charging more for it? It costs 60 on PC last I checked.

(And I hope you aren't a proud xbone owner, 'cus you might feel slighted that that version of the game is somewhat worse visually than the PS4 one.)

So they have the ability to make the game better on PC, but they simply choose not to because it will put the console version to shame.

I can see this causing quite a ruckus, I had some passing interest in the game, but I think I will pass.

Now Ubisoft are treating us like the older child whom the parent tells to go easy on the younger, and let him even win a few. Ubisoft is a crappy developer. And parent.

So does that mean they're going to install Uplay on all consoles and force console users to sign up for it to play the game as well?

You know, to keep them in line with the PC release?

So, it's safe to assume the game will have shitty console UI, shitty console controls, zero optimisation. Pass.

Confirmed: Ubisoft thinks console gamers are crybabies who have their feelings hurt over the most inconsequential things.

Fuck you, Ubisoft. I stopped buying your shitty PC ports ages ago, and, more recently, your games in general. This news only strengthens that stance.

You don't make things "fair" by dragging everyone down to the same level.

Ass-hats.

I already regret pre-ordering the game, but I'll not be requesting a refund (mainly because I got it on the Humble Bundle, and I'm not going to take away from chairity).

Why do I regret buying the game?

This is absolutely amazing how *bleep* up the Division's netcode is. Almost all stats (excluding currencies and health) are calculated and stored on the client, and server just accepts it without any checking. You can have unlimited ammo in a mag, super-speed (this, actually causes players to go invisible also), any desired critical chance, no recoil, unlimited medkits and nades and so on and on.
And this is not just lack of anticheat, it is global networking architecture *bleep*up. I highly doubt that this will be fixed any time soon after release. You probably might wanna stay away from PVP area while this problem is present.

If this is in fact true, The Division on the PC, at least in the early days, will be full of cheaters. That will suck.

Ha.
Ha.Ha.Ha.
Ha.Ha.Ha.Ha.
Ha.Ha.Ha.Ha.Ha.
Ha.Ha.Ha.Ha.Ha.Ha.

O, Ubisoft, never change.
You really want to beat EA in being EA, don't cha?

Still, I've refused to buy any Ubisoft/EA game new because of this kind of crap.

Yea, unless they really change around, Far Cry 4 will be the last game of theirs I purchase, and I bought that a while ago.

Oh no those poor console peasants, how could they possibly carry on while a superior port exists. Fuck you Ubisoft, I would have respected you more if you'd just said you were to lazy to put more effort in to the PC port. At least make it so that modders can reverse your bullshit you ass-hats.

Vigormortis:
Confirmed: Ubisoft thinks console gamers are crybabies who have their feelings hurt over the most inconsequential things.

Are they wrong? Check the very first reply to this topic.

On topic, I read the interview what I took from it was that the resources you get developing in PC can cause added features that would change the game so much that the PC and console versions would actually be different games. Like H1Z1, the consoles, unable to keep up to PC had to have their own watered down, dude-bro, Call of Zombie version, leaving out all the survival aspects. Perhaps that was what was meant, at least I hope so, cause I love Ubisoft games.

As someone that played in the beta(woo Humble Bundle) the PC version is actually really solid from what I saw. Lots of graphic, gameplay and input customization, so it's definitely not a half-baked port. It's disappointing to see the graphics pulled down to avoid the touchier of the console players from whining, but of what I played in the beta, the game was incredibly fun and ran great. It even ran on my machine pretty well which was actually UNDER minimum requirements at the time.

I'd definitely hazard against picking up any Ubi game sight unseen, they've lost too much trust for that. But if the game is good, then there's no reason to not get it(unless, of course, you personally feel strongly about issues like this, which is totally fair).

So yeah, definitely disappointing, but given that most AAA publishers give top billing to consoles for no particular reason, it's hardly a surprise that console priority acts like concrete shoes for PC ports. I'm just content with the fact that the port that IS there is actually rather solid. If we're real lucky, we'll get an HD texture pack like what they've been doing with Crysis and a few other games.

Aaaaaand any interest I had in this game is gone. As well as your company. You have just permanently lost a customer ubisoft, go fuck yourself. If you have the time and resources to push a platform to do its best, then DO IT. It will help you in the long run, unlike what you're doing now where you deliberatly gimp one platform

so as to not overshadow the consoles and end up bleeding customers from a massive portion of your market. Seriously Ubisoft, all this will do is drive people away.

So ubisoft is literally telling us that consoles are holding gaming back. I mean, thats nothing new, but i didnt expect to hear it from the horses mouth.

Thats not what TOS says though. the link you gave says that if you take Ubisoft game files and use them for mods, including if you modify those files, they still belong to Ubisoft. This does not apply to, for example, if you created your own character model and used it as a mod in the game.

Your second link includes a developer comment without context. the proper context is this: The code that you are seeing checks for the type of console it is on and applies appropriate shader according to that. Since this is the PC version, this code will never be executed since the prior check would determine its PC and ignore the console shaders code, hence "who cares" what that code is set to.

Ubisoft is guilty of a lot of things, these are not what you claim though.

Funny thing, The Witcher 3 Creative director pretty much said the same thing in an interview 2 weeks before the game launch. Noone seemed to care.....

So, basically, its GTA5 broken by design multiplayer all over again? It is impossible to stop cheaters in such design cases, which is why Rockstar was unable to do anything about them. I guess the game failed before it even got off the ground.

It's funny that in trying to avoid touchy console players, they instead pissed off touchy PC gamers, but yes, sad to see so much misinformation in this thread. People proclaiming they are done with Ubisoft because they aren't catering to the top 1% of PC gamers that have machines powerful enough to justify the kinds of changes the devs are talking about in this video. Even as someone with a high end PC myself, the amount of tears being shed over this "well no shit" comment is just embarrassing.

Which is disappointing, because the Division is probably Ubisoft's best PC port in a long time, but because the dev spoke casaully instead of running everything through an empty corporate PR speak filter, people get pissed off for something that we all knew AAA companies have been doing for as long as they've been making multi-platform games.

Beyond the potential cheating issue aceman 67 mentions above, the Division plays really well on a variety of hardware, from low end to high end, and it looks noticeably better on PC, but apparently admitting that it was made for consoles first is some kind of terrible sin now. This whole thing seems like people jumping to conclusions because Ubisoft has fucked up with PC ports in the past, so everyone is looking for the next Unity or Watch Dogs to burn on the pyre.

Ehh, I guess it doesn't matter to me much, the game will still sell millions of copies across all systems, and unless they totally fuck up in stopping cheaters, the PC version is a pretty good third person loot shooter.

It isn't explained very well at all, I mean PC gamers are not asking for EXTRA content, just that the content that exists looks and run as good as the hardware can support it.
For example, the art assets are created at the best and maximum fidelity possible, the originals or master copy of the assets and then down sampled and compressed to fit the needs of the programmers. Now if the art assets are made to fit a Xbone then just handed to the PC crew to use, that is wrong and worth complaining about as the PC can handle better art compression and deal with higher fidelity art, if the PC crew had access to the master copy of the assets and was able to cater them to the PC specific then its what should happen.

If the FPS is locked at say 30 because the PS4 can't output higher FPS reliably, and then the PC version is locked at 30 to keep 'parity' then again, that is wrong.

The admission simply isn't clear on what aspects have been adjusted to create parity, so PC gamers complaining or console gamers telling PC gamers to stop complaining is worthless... in fact the article is click bait, and sorry to say, worthless as well.

... not a issue for me, Ubicrap titles are auto no purchase no matter how good the game is because even when the game is good, Ubicrap manage to screw customers over some way or another (Anno ? DRM locking due to changes in GFX cards ? Online only crap ?).

back then, i had some interest in this game but now i really lost it. reducing the pc version for the console sake is very poor and beyond stupid for a decision.
i think siege is the last ubi title i will purchase. hell, even angry joe had 3 ubi titles as the most disappointing games of 2015. i guess ubi wants to get the worst company awards since EA got them twice in a row.

Yeah... I'm actually surprised that Ubisoft continues to make PC games. They may as well just stop. They continue to release poor PC ports over and over, too.

In general, I don't think that people should support Ubisoft; they really are a horrible company. If anyone was as bad or worse than EA (not a simple task), it'd be Ubisoft.

However, I am surprised that they're willing to finally admit what many companies refuse to: that the PC versions are held back because of consoles. Props to them for that (they still suck, though).

MetalDooley:

The only ones getting an inferior version are the PC users.
Console users are getting the best version they COULD get, meanwhile Ubisoft is INTENTIONALLY making the PC version worse than it could be for literally no reason at all but to spare the feelings of some seriously insecure brand-thralls.

Translation:
Better graphics = less money.
Same graphics = same money.
Same money > less money.
Same money. Yaay

I was sort of interested to for a good while, but I'm not suffering uPlay AND an inferior port.

Kindly fuck a cactus Ubisoft.

"One good thing about The Division is we've always considered the PC as a separate platform," said the developer. "We do have to keep it in check with the consoles; it would be kind of unfair to push it so far away from them. But it's been good having a dedicated PC build for this game."

This is essentially Ubi-speak for "We acknowledge that the PC platform is it's own unique platform, but we're not gonna treat it like one because it's too much work and we don't like those PC scum anyway." If EA had said this the torches and pitchforks would already be halfway up their arse by now so I hope the community responds in kind.

Treat the a platform like shit and essentially make less people buy your game. Nice marketing plan, Ubisoft.

So now you both have UPlay to cope with and no prettier graphics in return? But you shall charge PC gamers the same price you charge for the console versions even though UPlay makes it inferior in every regard.

Ubisoft, why do you even exist?

Wow.. It looks like you guys are reading a totally different article than I am.

They are not telling me anything different than and sane person doesn't already know. Games look better on the PC. Games can be configured way better on a PC. Consoles are very limiting.

Why is this Ubi's fault again?

How would it be a good idea to limit the PC to the specs of a console? Why is it bad form to make a game the best it can be on all formats? Is it their fault consoles don't have the processing power of a PC?
