Battleborn Gets a Mobile Companion, Battleborn Tap

"Tap your way to victory."

Gearbox launched its newest game, Battleborn, today, but it didn't arrive alone. Today Battleborn Tap was also announced - a mobile companion game that is now available for iOS and Android.

"Starting today, players can join the fight to save the last star in the universe on their mobile devices, while earning exclusive rewards for Battleborn on PS4/Xbox One/PC," a press release reads. "In Battleborn Tap, players command their squad of heroes on the field of battle, as they TAP their way to victory over waves of enemies and menacing bosses."

Players will take on "waves of enemies and menacing bosses," with the ability to unlock unspecified "exclusive rewards" for Battleborn across all platforms, earn in-game achievements in order to collect special rewards, and unlock, hire, and command heroes. And if you link a SHiFT account you will receive the gold Orendi skin, redeemable across all platforms for the main Battleborn game.

"Grow and customize those heroes by collecting and spending gold shards to upgrade your heroes' skills and abilities to give your squad the best fighting chance against increasingly difficult waves of enemies. Find and equip gear just like in the console version of Battleborn to help boost your heroes' stats and make them even more powerful."

I can guess this could be a cash grab sort of game in one way or another?

If it is legit free to play what so ever (no real money purchase in the game at all) then I might be interested to download it.

did a little investigative journalism (downloaded the app on my phone...) and it does indeed have microtransactions.

Okay, i've spent some time with the game and have some things to say.

Firstly, if you've ever played any of the hero clicker type games, this will immediately feel familiar. essentially a reskin of those games using cartoonified Battleborn assets.

The major concern people will have is the microtransactions, but i'm happy to report that the premium currency is never made to feel critical and is given freely enough that you could conceivably not even notice that they're for sale. now, this is only after an hour(ish) of observation and gameplay, later game could get more exploitative, but so far i see no such indications.

oh, and it does that thing that is increasingly popular where you never HAVE to watch ads, but can choose to for a random drop of currency, premium currency and various power ups.

So is the game survivable without the real money purchase?

That is something I am willing to let it slide (I mean it is a free purchase afterall so I expect some form of real money purchase somewhere but not in the form of holding the game hostage) unlike Dungeon Keeper.

You can from the looks of it. I'm rather concerned that it is a background process, so even closing the app keeps the game going, which isn't fun for the battery.
