Ghostbusters Director Calls Out "Assholes in Geek Culture"

ghostbusters 2

Paul Fieg says the criticism of his upcoming Ghostbusters reboot is from "assholes in geek culture".

Ever since the Ghostbusters reboot was announced, it has been under attack. Ghostbusters is a very special part of geek culture, and reboot direct Paul Fieg has received the brunt of these criticisms. Well, he's sick of it, and he has called out all of the "assholes in geek culture" for attacking his movie.

"Geek culture is home to some of the biggest assholes I've ever met in my life," Feig told the New York Daily News. "I don't care what shape or size or color or anything they are," Feig said, responding to criticism that SNL star Leslie Jones' character merely plays into Hollywood's mad black woman clicha. "I live or die on what things are funny and whether or not people will be entertained by them."

He claims that the all-female cast is a mere co-incidence: the funniest people he knows just happen to be women, which is why he has cast them in the movie.

"(Melissa McCarthy) is just this hilarious woman who is so funny," he said. "I don't care WHAT she looks like. As long as she's funny and is a professional. She's hilarious."

Recently, pundits started a campaign to downvote the new movie's trailer into oblivion. At time of writing, its sitting at 200,000 "likes" and over 700,000 "dislikes.

I like milissa mccarthy probably a little bit too much compared to the next guy, but when the hell did she become so popular? I mean before the string of McCarthy comedies, all i knew her from was gilmore girls.

"Look at that nest of angry hornets, what would happen if I started bugging the hornets? Why are the hornets stinging me now? It must just be the asshole hornets."

Maybe don't sell your movie as a heartless cash grab then you won't feel the sting.

It's true that the geek community can be quite toxic at times (just like everything else on the internet), but the trailer also failed to endear your movie to us. In which case I suggest you fire your marketing department.

Please don't insult our intelligence, Mr. Director Man. Bad enough you're making a shitty movie.

Fieg, Fieg, Fieg...

You're just making a bad movie. Deal with it (though it appears you can't).

To be fair we don't know its a shitty movie, we just know it has a shitty trailer.

Sorry, I'm calling total BS on this right here.

Given the original reveal of the film, plus the marketing, plus the way the trailer has been handled, plus the marketing push to present any criticism whatsoever of this movie as 'because sexism'...claiming that it was a co-incidence comes across as completely dishonest.

I'd have more respect for the guy if he'd just own the decision. I've never been impressed by what I've seen of any of his directing work (bits and pieces mostly, I just can't bring myself to sit through the entirety of one of his films) and based on the dialogue from the trailer it seems he's a terrible writer (in fact the only thing I was impressed with about the trailer was how well several of the actresses involved did with such poor material). But I'd have at least some respect for the fact he could make a decision on something, own that decision and go 'so what?' to people. From this its like he's trying to weasel out of any criticism.

Way to win over audience that don't understand why a classic film needs a reboot/remake.
If Fieg wasn't so desperate for money he never would have gone near this project.

I think I will choose to skip this... and any other film Fieg ever makes.

Well this discussion is certainly going to end well and definitely won't reopen old wounds YET AGAIN. Thank you Mr. Fieg, this is JUST what we needed more of around here.

/s

For the record, the humor in the trailer would have fallen flat for me regardless of the type of actors or actresses involved. I hope you weren't serious on that whole "live or die by what things are funny" bit, Mr. Fieg. This is certainly not worth losing one's life over.

So I wanna call him a huge jerk that's generalizing an entire culture based on the poor reception to some dumb movie trailer, but....

Recently, pundits started a campaign to downvote the new movie's trailer into oblivion. At time of writing, its sitting at 200,000 "likes" and over 700,000 "dislikes.

...I wish we wouldn't make ourselves so gahdamn hard to defend....

He's obviously reacting based on his feelings and lashing out because he's created what looks to be a massive failure. There's no honesty in what he says, he has jack shit to back him up and he'll forever be remembered as the guy who destroyed Ghostbusters.

Enjoy yourself Fieg, you've made your own bed on this one.

Also it's a good example of what happens when you mess with the hobbyist/geek/nerd/gamer communities. We're probably the worst treated demographic in history and it's extremely rare that we ever get actual apologies. Yeah, we can be toxic and petty but it doesn't take much to get on our good side either. Hopefully the industries will learn that and stop calling us names.
Hell, they can keep doing it for all I care, because if it keeps up and we have more developers, directors and journalists trying to shame and bully us, they'll learn how devastatingly effective we can be at destroying their PR and income.

Pretty soon, the political influences we keep seeing in our hobbies will be called out for what they are - outrage cultists trying to shame and browbeat anyone who disagrees with them.
I don't think there was a plot or conspiracy or anything like it, it's just the pendulum peaking at the far left about to smack back the other way.

Apparently having everyone call your movie a shameless, heartless, unfunny cash-grab based off the trailer that was crapped out to us is one of Mr. Fieg's triggers. :3

Some would say you can't judge a movie by it's trailer, and I certainly agree with that notion. The problem is that giving a movie the benefit of the doubt only works half the time. The other half of the time you get Batman v Superman: crap trailer for a crap movie. :P

And you know what the scary part is?

Oh, Mr. Feig... The disingenuousness of claiming his crass femsploitation of a beloved (despite that sequel) entertainment brand is merely "coincidental", after how many weeks of shameless cross-promotion with the tawdriest of the gender-grudge mongers the Internet has to offer, is way more hilarious than any movie he might hope to make. In all my years, I don't think I've ever seen a more soullessly cynical campaign of wedge marketing. Pretty much the whole rationale of this harsh (re)booting is "Familiar logo taken over by Girl Power! Are YOU going to risk the consequences of withholding support from the Right Side of History?"

This of course is a function of the synergy purveyors of Product like Feig are building with the dominant "geek culture" Commentariat. People deciding what they like for themselves is a hopelessly inefficient model for making a profit from the Industry point of view. The solution is to turn cultural products into "social causes", with the ensuing social pressures conveniently helping direct consumer behavior. The producers empower the "critics" by inserting their talking points into their products, and in return the "critics" enforce the support of the audience by sanctions such as stigmatizing the recalcitrant with shameful labels. There's quite a bit of leverage for wrangling the masses in this scheme, as long as everyone in on it is on the same page.

Mr. Feig does have an accidental point, though. There sure are a whole lot of fairly gaping recta involved in the "geek culture" racket these days. I hesitate to call them "carpetbaggers" because of some residual positive connotations with the Union victory in that whole Civil War episode, but it does seem like a pertinent concept.

Ohhh dear.

I mean, he's not wrong. "Geek culture" does indeed house some of the most bitter and petty bastards on the planet.

However, he really should have qualified that a bit. Because it comes across as "If you dislike my movie you're an arsehole" which is never a good look.

Steven Bogos:

He claims that the all-female cast is a mere co-incidence: the funniest people he knows just happen to be women, which is why he has cast them in the movie.

Well, I don't want to call him a liar, since I don't know for sure, but... I kind of feel like the selling point was "it's women!" I don't like Ghostbusters that much, and thus I didn't really pay much attention to this movie, but that's all I really heard about it. "It's women!"

What's unrealistic about 7 out of 9 people hating that trailer? It was an absolute flop as far as trailers are concerned. I question highly the veracity of this "campaign to downvote" the trailer, when it's a pretty shitty trailer on its own.

"I live or die on what things are funny" well, you better get that tombstone worked on since genderbending aside, the script for this is STILL terrible.

I've never seen somebody giftwrap himself so neatly for ravenous trolls before.

The worst part about all this is that his shitty justifications are just going to be fodder for somebody else's shitty justifications, and it's going to be used against people who don't even have anything to do with this, and don't deserve the bullshit that's being thrown at them. It'll perhaps be many more years before another attempt, much less genuine, will be made by the mainstream to create a movie primarily featuring women that doesn't fall into shitty stereotypes and crappy marketing, much less have a chance because morons like this guy are given projects that the studio doesn't care about.

Well, he's certainly not wrong.

It says a lot that geek culture can be accurately described as "a nest of angry hornets".

Well, he isn't right either...

That trailer wasn't funny. I would think if the movie was funny, the trailer would at least have me chuckle once. Or if they play off of the ghostbusting angle, make me want to see it for that. But it failed on both fronts for me. I agree with the others in this thread about the bit with all female cast being coincidence. Yea right.

Does geek culture have assholes, yeah. So does every other hobbyist culture. Sports, gearhead, and biker culture must be made of saints according to Fieg and some in this thread. Even classical music culture has assholes but are probably more often referred to as pompous asses in those circles. If you have ever had an opinion someone else found annoying, congratulations, you are probably considered an asshole to them.

The trailer sucked bad. Many people agree. They must all be assholes. /s

Pundit campaign for downvotes? Have they seen the trailer? It sucks! Recut it and people will probably like it! I liked the fan recut featured by the author of this article two months ago.

I dont post much anymore, but my only problem is with Melissa Mccarthy. Dont get me wrong, if this movie ends up being good, I'll be the first to say it, its just that every McCarthy movie I've seen so far has been un-watchable garbage...the best lessons we can learn come from history.

I don't know. If you work in a toy store, and people are looking for Ghostbusters toys, and all you have are the new ones, they get very disappointed. Part of that may be because the movies not even out yet, who knows.

I'm not looking forward to it myself. Ghostbusters was a big part of my childhood, loved them to death. But the time to make a sequel was 15-20 years ago. Even then I'm not sure it would've worked. The first one was fantastic, and it stands the test of time. But re-watching the second one a few years ago... I'm not sure even that one should've been made. It was extremely cheesy, overly late 80's, and it seemed more like marketing for the soundtrack and the toys. Which I can't fault them for, it was popular. Just not sure it needed to be made.

But really, the Ghostbusters game from 2009 was the Ghostbusters 3 I needed. Hit all the right spots. I need to play that again. Sure it had flaws, but it was still pretty damn fun.

Steven Bogos:
"(Melissa McCarthy) is just this hilarious woman who is so funny," he said. "I don't care WHAT she looks like. As long as she's funny and is a professional. She's hilarious."

There's a fair bit of irony here, because do you know who does care what she looks like? She does. She puts her weight at the center of her comedy so often that it frequently feels like that's all she's got.

P.S. Thanks

Sure. It has nothing to do with the fact the trailer looks humorless, flat, dry and overall paints the movie as looking boring as sin.

My thoughts on Fieg's statement? One of two things:

1) This, as well as the abysmal "girl power" pandering trailer, are all elaborate marketing techniques to advertise the movie and get people talking about it. Even if the responses are overwhelmingly negative, there's no denying that Ghostbusters is on lots of peoples' minds now, many of which are due entirely to the word-of-mouth vitriol. This negative publicity WILL translate into more ticket sales than without. Analysts will capitalize on anything if they smell blood in the water; throwing in a little bait can attract quite the horde.

2) He's a narcissist; a tortured poet with no sense of humor who happens to have all the powerful connections to get his hands on a popular franchise, which he thinks he will improve by overhauling it into an inferior slapstick neo-liberal clownshow with a transparent coat of propaganda varnish.

I wonder which one it is - either way, the movie will probably be successful enough to encourage this kind of continued practice.

He claims that the all-female cast is a mere co-incidence: the funniest people he knows just happen to be women, which is why he has cast them in the movie.

In that case he either has a terrible sense of humor or he doesn't know very many people, because nothing in that trailer was funny and having done a quick bit of googling on the comedy styles of the actresses I can see why.

It doesn't help that the CGI shown in the trailer looks like something from a late 2000s B movie, the dialogue is cringe worthy at best, the visual direction seems to be all over the place and the entire marketing campaign up until this point has done nothing to sell me on the movie.

But of course, none of this matters, because the Youtube dislike button is now possessed by the ghost of Misogyny Past and clicking on it will transform a person into a being who can only express their distaste or approval of a product in whether it indulges their new, festering hatred of anything that lacks a Y chromosome. Quick, someone send a proton gun to Youtube HQ to exorcise the servers!

TL.DR. There's a lot wrong with this trailer and blaming it on the minority of western, internet users who harbor bigoted feelings towards women is distraction from the flaws of the trailer, and worse, distraction from actual acts of bigotry and hatred.

Well, I just looked at his imdb page for the other stuff he's done, and yeah...it's mostly shit. So I think, based on his track record alone, this will be shit too.

Lufia Erim:

Gilmore Girls was also the last time I found her funny. My question is how she became so popular. Nobody seems to really like these movies she's done.

RaikuFA:

The way you framed this, it sounds less like the problem is assholes and more than nerd culture is, by default, angry. If nerd culture is such that it can be provoked like a bunch of angry animals, then there's a problem. Especially since all the hornets needed to be angered was to announce a movie starring women.

Do you really want to go there? Because if that's what nerd culture is, then I think Objectionable might be on the mark here.

Objectable:
And you know what the scary part is?

I don't even know what geek culture is supposed to mean. What shared culture do we actually have?

Zhukov:
Ohhh dear.

I mean, he's not wrong. "Geek culture" does indeed house some of the most bitter and petty bastards on the planet.

However, he really should have qualified that a bit. Because it comes across as "If you dislike my movie you're an arsehole" which is never a good look.

Worse. He's just invited the fury of #notallgeeks.

Yeah Paul, there sure are a boat load of assholes in the geek community... What exactly does that have to do with your Ghostbusters remake/reboot looking like right garbage? It's not simply the assholes hating this piece of shit, Feig, even the majority of the popular "nice guy" critics are shitting on it (under the disclaimer ofcourse that they have nothing against women). But maybe try not to take it too personal -- it's mostly Sony Pictures we're blaming for this one.

So it's the geek culture? Yeah, it totally doesn't have a thing to do with the fact that you can see from the trailer what a giant piece of shit this movie's going to be. I'm not even a hardcore Ghostbusters fan and it's that obvious.

Something Amyss:
Gilmore Girls was also the last time I found her funny. My question is how she became so popular. Nobody seems to really like these movies she's done.

Never forget that we inhabit a world upon which Paul Blart: Mall Cop made serious bank.

Although personally I thought The Heat was okay, so maybe I'm part of the problem.

Steven Bogos:
Well, he's sick of it, and he has called out all of the "assholes in geek culture" for attacking his movie.

Incorrect. He's sick of people attacking him. As he says in the linked article:

Paul Feig:
Especially after being attacked by them for months because of this 'Ghostbusters' project.
