After Poor Suicide Squad Reviews, Fan Creates Petition to Shut Down Rotten Tomatoes

rotten-tomatoes-320

In the wake of a slew of negative reviews of Suicide Squad, a fan has created a petition to shut down review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

The reviews of upcoming DC film Suicide Squad are not encouraging. It's currently sitting at 33% on the site's Tomatometer, which places it squarely in "Certified Rotten" territory.

As you can imagine, fans of the movie are not happy about the reviews, and a large number of them have glommed onto a petition that popped up on Change.org. Started by "Abdullah Coldwater," the petition seeks to shut down Rotten Tomatoes entirely. Why? Well, the petition says,

"We need this site to be shut down because It's Critics always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews, Like

1- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016
2- Suicide Squad 2016

and that Affects people's opinion even if it's a really great movies"

Over 11,000 people have signed the petition so far. Poor spelling and grammar aside, it seems a bit odd to have this many people (the majority of whom, incidentally, haven't seen the movie yet) clamoring for the shutdown of a site that didn't even write the reviews in question. All that removing Rotten Tomatoes would do is make gathering the reviews a little more difficult.

It remains to be seen what the general public thinks about Suicide Squad, as it won't hit theaters until this Friday. If you do go see it, let us know what you think in the forums!

Stupid fanboys at their finest. As if shutting down a website gathering reviews from all around would make the movie suddenly better...

..................and just who do they intend to submit this petition to that would have the authority to shut the site down?

Gotta love impotent rage.

"They just take 90 minutes watch your movie then use 5 minutes leave bad review on RottenTomatoes add some downvotes to the film, next they sit and watch and laugh. Booyaaaaa, that's all they have to do."

Talk about Pussy Galore.

That'd be the Rotten Tomatoes that Warner Brothers - who also own DC - also part-own?

Man, this whole thing is a whirlwind of stupidity.

That gif sums up my feelings exactly.

How the fuck do these people brush their teeth without accidentally drowning in the sink?

Oh man, this is all a beautiful disaster and I love it.

Also, here's a real image of the guy behind this nonsense -

Well that's embarrassing for me. I'm off to have a romantic bath with the toaster.

Mmm, wet toast. Haven't had that in awhile.

Where was this when Dark Knight Rises was getting bad reviews?

And the blow out in the comments were so huge that Rotten Tomatoes shut down thge comments.

Some people shouldn't have access to the internet. Or need to grow a brain. Or both.

I believe the insult you're looking for is "And this is why some people shouldn't be allowed to breed."

Ok assuming if it does somehow get through (no idea how), it doesn't stop bad reviews from being made. What's next a petition for the critic to stop saying bads thing against DC films?

I'm going to float the conspiracy that this is all the machinations of Tara Strong, who was weirdly super into Hot Topic Harley.

Also funny how all the blame is on the reviewers instead of WB, who were at peak-bat at a time where comic movies got huge and delivered nothing but crap to theatres*.

*I haven't seen Killing Joke and that got a limited release, but I don't trust the reviews because that story is violently opposed to the tastes of the mainstream audience and critics

All the DC fanboys who are unsatisfied with the poor reviews or who believe Marvel fanboys are actively sabotaging need to calm down a notch or two.

Bad reviews is actually the best that can happen to the DC movies right now, because that might perhaps give them an incentive to actually make good movies, instead of just continue pushing out bad movies because "the reviews weren't so bad".

Touche.

Wouldn't it be easier to start a petition to force DC/WB to actually make good movies instead? Or to rephrase that, wouldn't a peition asking for such make a lot more sense(as far as petitions make sense to begin with)?

It's petty, but not completely unwarranted in my opinion.

I feel that Rottentomatoes should be like Metacritic and have a separate section for User reviews. Because a lot of the time, I see a major discrepency between the two, and it usually means the movie is okay.

For example, let's take Warcraft and BvS. These movies had pretty bad critic reviews, but a LOT of good user reviews. This probably comes down to the fact that the critics aren't really fans of the source material and are more just watching the movies because they have to, without really "getting" anything that's going on. Whereas the users who go out to watch these movies are more than likely going to be fans of the source material already, and can provide a more accurate insight for other fans (probably you included).

And then there are movies like Ghostbusters, which saw decent critic reviews, and abysmal user reviews. Probably due to critics looking at the movie with a more neutral viewpoint, away from any backlash or controversy. Whereas users have been on the hate bandwagon for Ghostbusters ever since its conception.

Do I think that Rottentomatoes should go? No. Is the petition petty? Yes. But could Rottentomatoes be improved? Definitely.

EDIT: Someone corrected me that RT has user scores. Shows how much I visit the website.

Never underestimate idiots in large numbers. Why anyone would want to show how sensitive they are always surprises me. I reckon Rotten Tomatoes sucks too, but I just ignore them into oblivion (I'd probably agree with them on Suicide Squad though).

Guys guys guys, lets all just admit this is absolutely hilarious!

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!

I demand a petition to cancel the petition to shut-down the Rotten Tomatoes website!

Parents...this is why you should supervise your kids use of the tinterwebs! It doesn't forget stupid shit like this, it will haunt them forever into the their embarrassed adulthood. Do you want that for your kids? Well maybe, if you're one of those that want them to suffer in a way of getting back at your own failures. Anyhow;

I sometimes think these people just need to find a way of chilling, whether it be spiritually (in the more biological sense of meditation etc), chemically or shamanist...ically? Anything to remove those sticks from their arses and calm down. I have seen and experienced the differences that take hold and the potential for character growth should not be underestimated.

That is 11k people who don't believe in free speech or critique. The road they want us all to go down, my word.

A thought: If all this energy went into the desire to have a "Fred Roger's Day" instead, we'd all have another day off of work by now

Oh, no! Critics have bad things to say about a movie I like! It must be BIAS!
It couldn't possibly be that the films are aesthetically ugly and morally repugnant when they aren't just poor quality overall.

Reminds me of when the guy who put a death threat on the people who REPORTED on a delay of no man's sky. Way to shoot the messenger, guys.

To be fair, Ghost busters also got a better score then it should too.

From a neutral standpoint, I think these people are being incredibly petty.
From the standpoint of a DC fan, I think these people are fucking morons for defending Warner Bros and their shitty adaptations. Next time make a petition demanding some better movies from WB.

It already does.

BvS [...] had pretty bad critic reviews, but a LOT of good user reviews.

Gonna need a rain check on that - at best the reaction from audiences was lukewarm, and worst it was seen as a putrid stain on the legacy of their favorite characters and stories.

I hope you're not claiming BvS actually respects the source material it is based on and doesn't just completely bastardize it. Regardless of that, a movie should stand on its own merits to be good - if you need to brush up on the backstory of the film to actually understand it - let alone enjoy it - then your film is not doing adequate job of explaining itself. That was the major gripe critics and non-fans had with the Warcraft film - its weak plot and exposition made it a mess and a slog to get through. No amount of "I understood that reference" will make up for that.

Holy hell where do I sign? Forcing them to make good movies instead of crap via petition sounds amazing! Granted I'll spend no time whatsoever considering how on Earth a petition could force someone to make a not shit movie, or to close down a website because I've decided, fuck em, but that won't stop ME from putting forth the almost 0 effort of signing a digital petition! Rabble, rabble!

Gotta love how change.org is often used as an anger outlet and a circle jerking site.

DC needs to stop playing catch up to marvel. If you make a good Superman movie, Batman movie, Wonder Woman movie, or anything else, people will flood the theaters to see it because they're iconic characters. And they'll keep coming back for more if you do a good job.

Personally I hope the DCCU bombs harder than Mighty No. 9 after this crap.

Some people take these things a little too seriously. I mean come on, DC has been getting less than stellar feedback on everything since the Dark Knight trilogy ended. Is this really a shock?

if it's not out yet, why do they even have reviews of it?

It seems like the easiest way to solve many of rottentomatoes perceived issues would be to simply not post any reviews until the official release date.

Posting earlier than that just seems so....clickbaity.
