The Nostalrius Team Wants Elysium to Stop Using its Vanilla WoW Code and Character Data

nostalrius-320

There's a strange announcement from the private vanilla WoW community, as the Nostalrius team is pulling their code and character data from Elysium.

Back in December, the Nostalrius vanilla WoW servers relaunched under the banner of the Elysium Project. This came about because Blizzard had issued a cease and desist to the Nostalrius team back in April. After a high profile petition and much attention from the community, Blizzard actually met with the team and acknowledged the interest in so-called "legacy servers."

But when Blizzard failed to mention official legacy servers at Blizzcon, the Nostalrius team announced that it would be bringing the servers back by giving the code to the Elysium project and making character transfers available. Now, just one month after their return, the Nostalrius team is calling on Elysium to pull the plug.

In a post on the the official Nostalrius forums, the team says,

"Contrary to our expectations, our decision to release our source code and character database to Elysium actually made our 2 goals harder to achieve, implying a thought decision to make."

The appeal to Elysium came shortly thereafter, as Nostalrius administrator Viper wrote,

"We ask Elysium to join this effort for Legacy realms by stopping to use data that we provided. We know they aim at official legacy realms as we do. We have already stopped the account transfer process from our side as a first step. Nostalrius community is no longer about private servers, it is about official legacy realms."

The appeal is couched in terms that make it apparent that the Nostalrius team feels that the existence of its server makes it less likely that official legacy servers will happen, and that their community wasn't satisfied with the move.

"Today, only 10% of the former Nostalrius players have generated a token to join Elysium, and we believe that we failed to satisfy this community entirely, as at the same time legacy fans acquired a reputation of "pirates" on the official WoW community."

The team says that is has already disabled transfers for existing accounts, so if you haven't transferred your character, you won't be able to. Despite the apology that's included in the post, the reaction to it in the Nostalrius forum has been almost completely negative. Here is just one example:

"Are you for real right now? Is it just character data or you mean the source code? You say you care about legacy servers, yet you imply we just have to life with the fact, assuming Elysium believes this non-sense, that we'll once again lose our characters we worked on for well over a year now?

How does taking away our characters again on a private server have anything to do with legacy servers? If anything, the bigger Elysium grows, the more attention it will bring. Attention is what you need, thats what you managed to get with Nostalrius, and what got you a meeting at Blizzard right? Attention is the only way Blizzard is ever gonna take legacy servers serious."

The community is obviously not happy with the decision, and it's unclear what prompted the move. There's been no response from the Elysium Project, and in fact its website is currently offline, with a cached version being displayed.

We'll keep an ear to the ground for more information, but for now, there looks to be a rift of sorts in the legacy server community.

Give it up, fellas. Blizzards IP, Blizzards rules. Crying that you'll keep breaking the rules until Blizzard changes the rules to what you want is the literal definition of childish.

It isn't surprising that the community has a split. And to be perfectly honest, you can expect nothing else from any online community. Derision, toxicity, insults, trolling.

isnt it obvious whats going on?
blizz told nostalrius to stop distributing their code, like they probably agreed to when shuting down their own server, or blizz will sue them out of existence for good.
blizzard just doesnt think its viable for them to actually provide this service themselves, that doesnt mean they should just accept anyone else hosting their game

Except Blizzard isn't offering that game. In any way. It's not offering vanilla WoW and it's impossible to play legally. Even though you bought that game. Even though you legally obtained a right to play it, you can't play it anymore.

Legally speaking, they're perfectly right. Morally speaking, this is shit. Practically speaking, this is also shit. Sure, compared to WoW's current numbers, it may be very little players that want to play this. But the cost of upkeep is almost nothing for the giant that is ActiBlizzard.

Dear Editors, you suck at doing actual research. Elysium had a response to Nost on Jan 14th at 9:40 am.

https://forum.elysium-project.org/topic/32701-our-official-response-to-nostalrius-%E2%80%94-elysium-will-prevail/

Dear community,

It is with sadness that we must act under such circumstances. However, rest assured that our loyalties remain with the community in all things..

Our actions

Over the course of the next several weeks we will discontinue use of the Nostalrius core. By then, we will have completed Anathema, which will be equal to or superior to the Nostalrius core. We assure you that you will not feel any difference in the cores except for a potential increase in quality. We have been continuously updating the Anathema core side-by-side with the Nostalrius core.

All characters that have existed in the game world since Elysium's launch until now will be maintained and all Nostalrius specific data will be wiped. Nostalrius realms will be renamed to Anathema PvP and Darrowshire PvE. A 30-minute maintenance will occur at 8:00 PM server time to apply the rename and the removal of unclaimed characters.

All future Nostalrius related data will be denied. The new realms will not be affected, and Elysium will not disclose any Nostalrius' data such as the databases and core.

Nostalrius handed us the torch, we have no intention of putting it out.

Insight

We are using this opportunity to communicate the first numbers of the project:
52% of Nostalrius active accounts transferred over 16 days(token generator uptime)
155% increase of active accounts compared to Nostalrius.
50% of total accounts were active in the last 7 days
17,000 players simultaneously online on re-launch
30,500 players simultaneously online over 4 realms
62 volunteers

Numbers speak for themselves: the community is growing as Legacy WoW keeps generating more and more interest. We believe that our movement should remain loud and we will do what is in our power to preserve it. We believe that our players must have a home. We will keep providing this community until Blizzard announces official Legacy World of Warcraft content and provide a tangible timeline for their release.

WoW Community

Part of the World of Warcraft community as a whole (not just private servers) feel that we are pirates and have shady practices. However, no matter what filter they attempt to put over their perception of us, we only have one motivation: To restore and grow passion to a game that we love, and that many thought to be gone forever. We want to abide by the game's creators by any means we are able in order to show good will, which is why we are taking these steps. However, despite this stance, shutting down is not an option until real action is taken on their part to create Legacy servers.

The environment within the game is wonderful, and is one of the key points to why we are so passionate about it. Fun, polite, social, and yet we find a completely different environment on social media. Some members of the community take it upon themselves to slander other organizations who are trying to reach the same goal as us. They also attack Blizzard, the very entity that we wish to be embraced by in the creation of Legacy servers. So we ask you to be the "bigger man". Show the world that we are a community and support each other. Nothing will be accomplished through show of strength or base insults. Discuss and explain your interests in ways that upbuild instead of tear down. While criticism is good, it is constructive criticism that is the key to success. The community is big enough for us to coexist but it would be better to exist united. We hope moderators of such discussions, (whether it be social media, a guild, or another server project) and enthusiasts will take this message at heart.

This is the community we need to be.

We hope you all will not see this as a blow to our progress, but as an opportunity to show the world our resilience. While our predecessor has been fatally wounded, we gain a second wind.

We will not let you down.

As to the idea that Blizz still has any actual say about this vanilla server:

Server is based out of Ukraine and is fully supported by donations by the player base. As long as it is funded it will stay up no matter what legal attempts Blizzard makes. Current costs are about $1200 per month based off the request for support post:

https://forum.elysium-project.org/topic/24450-financial-report-hardware-costs/

Counting all 4 servers there was a population of over 30k concurrent users. Plenty of people who can donate, many who already have.

I guess if Bliz isn't able to do it then a group of unpaid volunteers will just have to pick up the slack and bring back the fun of vanilla.
