Nintendo Announces DLC Pass for Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo has announced a $20 DLC Pass for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

In a YouTube video today, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma announced an expansion pass for upcoming The Legend of Zelda title, Breath of the Wild. The expansion pass will be available on launch day, March 3, will include new content rolled out at two different points during the upcoming year, and will cost players $19.99.

The "Expansion Pack Bonus" will be available on launch day, and will include three new treasure chests in the Great Plateau. These chests will include "useful items" and "exclusive in-game clothing" - a shirt with a Nintendo Switch logo that Link can wear.

DLC Pack arrives in Summer 2017 and adds a new Cave of Trials challenge, new Hard Mode, and an additional map feature. DLC Pack 2, releasing in Holiday 2017, will include a "new original story," new dungeon, and new challenges.

The DLC packs cannot be purchased separately. The expansion pass is available for Wii U and Switch versions of the games.

Having to buy Hard Mode?

That one seems new to me as far as terrbile DLC practices go.

I don't know what the Cave of Trials is, it was probably explained in one of the many Videos I can't watch due to my terrible internet, but overall, this doesn't sound like a good value, especially this thing with having to buy Hard Mode and having to buy a in-game fanboy shirt...just really rubs me the wrong way.

If you did not get the memo back when the horse armor came out.
Time to find a better hobby, its only going to go down hill from here.

Nintendo. Are you really just piling all the worst practices and ideas in video gaming into one console at this point because i can tell you. Much more and even Pokemon won't be able to move units.

Huh, interesting. The 1st dlc is basically stuff that should be free but you can't get it separate from spending 20 bucks on new story content. Wonder whats next from the big N. Maybe making us pay for extra lives in mario GTA edition.

In this case, the worry is that it's for a Zelda game, which is a totally single player experience and a long held belief that Nintendo actually ships totally finished games on disc. Kind of spits on the narrative a bit.

Well I guess we are officially fucked. Nintendo was the last bastion of getting entire games right out of the box, so much for that shit. Incoming Mario Odyssey season passes, Splatoon 2, etc and so forth.

Also probably means that this Zelda game wont be nearly as good as people hope.

I can only hope "difficulty mode" is short-hand for a "master quest"-esque game mode, and whomever made the announcement was an idiot. Other than that, at least they seem to not have gone down the "cut up the game to make day-one dlc" route, yet...

So here's my question for everyone, was Mario Kart 8 not a complete game because it had DLC? What about Fire Emblem? ( granted thats possibly a bad example given Fates business model) Smash Bros?

Least it's not as bad as Metro Last Light locking Ranger Hardcore (the way the game was meant to be played) behind DLC (or advertising it as a preorder bonus).

I notice a lot of complaints regarding the difficulty - but no one seems to see the additional maps and challenges added in on the same pack. If anything, this will likely be a "Super Hard" mode, since Hero Mode (The Hard difficulty) has been included in every Zelda game since ~2011.

Also - don't forget that the second DLC pack is full expansion.
This isn't something that should be shocking to people. Nintendo has been dabbling in DLC for years now, and this type of content seems similar to what one would see in a lot of games today.

Having to buy a season pass/ DLC pack for hard mode, really? The season pass only has 1 bit of story DLC (i.e. the only kind of DLC most people will actually want) in it as well. Nintendo's going feet first into the scummy DLC market other AAA publishers have used for a while, can't wait to see people try and defend this one just because it's Nintendo.

Every company starts somewhere with the down slide. The thing is, once they start on the slide, it only gets worse. Add this with their hilariously awful paid online service and their slow trickle of DLC and Season Passes, and the future looks pretty bad. REALLY bad. Seriously, Nintendo was the last company I ever expected Day 1 DLC from. Day 1 DLC is and always WILL be the worst practice besides the Pre-Order BS. Day 1 DLC just means they cut things apart that can easily part of the main game at release.

Being complicit in the crappy business practices because it isn't "that bad" is part of the problem. Being vocal both in speech AND with your money is the only way to prevent things from getting worse. People need to stop being okay with being bent over backwards by game companies.

Nintendo is only doing this out of desperation. They see the stupid sheep on the other consoles paying millions for addons and they have to get in on it or fade away quietly.

Nintendo is treading water big time now. Nobody wants good games anymore, and Nintendo can't figure out why, so they are just copying tried and true methods, like duping idiots into buying stuff that should already be in the game.

But don't you DARE judge them for it, because the other big publishers have done it with great success at the expense of the consumer, Nintendo would be stupid to not follow suit.

Well, that just means that $20 Pass already lacks value since the first of the three involved with it is completely useless.

The second is some Trial Dungeon and a difficulty mode... Difficulty Modes as DLC is the absolute worst thing ever and is every single time it shows up. I can't even count that, so that is some extra money being wasted here. Then you have a new map feature... Goody? Doesn't sound very exciting. I doubt the Trial thing is going to be worth it since it will not really add a whole lot of actual content. However, that is just me and some people may actually like it, so it has some value.

The third DLC actually sounds interesting and adds actual content to the game and is worth actual money completely.

So for $20 they are trying to market three DLC packs when really there is only one and some trial dungeon and a bunch of nonsense. Not really exciting in the end and not worth $20.

Everyone starts somewhere and Nintendo, being one of the most paranoid game companies and one of the strictest ever with content ID can EASILY go down the Ubisoft route full steam ahead, and maybe even surpass Ubisoft in that department. Better to nip this in the bud before it has the chance to get worse.

How is one DLC coming out 3 months after release, and the other 6+ months after release, cut content? Jarvik, from ME3, was cut content. If anything, this is most definitely not cut content because of 1, the time frame of release and 2, the date of the game going gold (couple weeks ago). If this DLC was announced over a month ago, with a release date of within 1 month of the game coming out, your cut content argument would be better.

If memory serves, there was an optional cave in Twilight Princess in which you had to beat increasingly tough bunches of monsters on each floor to progress. And at the end, you probably got some kind of reward (I don't think I made it all the way). This is likely much the same kind of thing.

What I'm curious about is what exactly is a "new map feature".

I don't necessarily think it's safe to assume anything that's not explicitly stated, such as a "Hard Mode" already present in the base game. "This is Hard Mode. It's new!" See how that works?

Ballsy to talk shit about other peoples reading ability when you yourself fail to grasp that "New Hard Mode" can mean "It's new because there's no hard mode in the base game".

What is included with the hard mode? Are enemies harder hitting, or are they actually changing enemy layouts, dungeon layouts, resource allocation, how is the balance, is it hard but fair, or is it not even that hard at all? Details needed to determine whether this is worth the extra monies. With the idea of Nintendo finally joining the club for season passes, I'm not a fan of the season pass in general, it's paying for something in advance with no gaurentee of quality, and it's digital so buying ahead of time is pointless anyway because there's not need to worry about the store front running out of product, but I've nothing against paid DLC. Expansion packs were the paid DLC of the old days, and I doubt anyone would say Frozen Throne, Brood Wars, or Half-Life Opposing Forces were bad. Well done extra content is nice, and anyone saying that it means the game is not complete, it's no more incomplete than any game that is in a series. Yes, some paid DLC is bullshit, look at the DLC Nintendo hid behind Amiibos with extra dungeons or new maps in games, or horse armor, but the idea alone isn't a bad one, and I'd rather wait to see what the content is to determine whether it this will be bad or not. If you don't want to pay that price for the extra content, just wait until they release the bundle with all the content together.

Maybe it's more like hard mode for the first zelda game.

Feels weird calling them dlc packs 1 and 2 when you can't buy them separately. All I'm interested in is the extra story content.
