Western Digital Announces its First Portable SSD ![]() Western Digital's has announced its first portable SSD, combining high speeds with plenty of storage. If you're one of those folks who loves external storage but also wants blazing fast speeds, today brought a really interesting announcement from hard drive manufacturer Western Digital. The company will soon be introducing its first ever portable SSD. The new portable drive will be part of the My Passport product line, and will be compatible with USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C ports. It will pack in a USB Type-C to Type-C cable, and for those of you who don't have access to Type-C yet, there's also an adapter for USB Type-A ports. The drives will offer up to 515 MB/s transfer rates. Sven Rathjen, vice president of marketing, Client Solutions, Western Digital, is quoted in press release as saying, "Our fastest portable drive yet, the My Passport SSD is a powerful solution for people who need to move content quickly and easily wherever life takes them." The My Passport SSD will offer 256-bit AES hardware encryption and password protection. If you happen to drop it, it's 6.5 foot drop-tested for shock resistance to withstand 1500G of force. It's plenty small, measuring 3.5 inches long, 1.8 inches wide, and a mere .39 inches tall. The new drives will be available this quarter in three sizes: 256GB ($99.99), 512GB ($199.99), and 1TB ($399.99). | |
I'm not super knowledgeable about computer parts, but from what I understand... Aren't flashdrives solid-state memory? Sooo isn't a 256GB flashdrive not also a portable 'SSD'? Or rather, isn't this just a big, expensive, and faster flashdrive? | |
Flashdrives and SSDs use different tech. That's why the SSD is faster. Much, much faster. | |
They are, but they are different kinds of solid state memory. Flash drives tend to be ass at speed and access in comparison to SSDs. It's kind of like comparing a moped to a Harley. | |
