Report: An Alien: Isolation Sequel May be in The Works

A report from the Official PlayStation Magazine is suggesting that Creative Assembly is working on a new Alien game.

Alien: Isolation was one of the sleeper hits of 2014. Following the critically-panned Colonial Marines in 2013, Isolation surprised pretty much everyone by delivering an experience that was frightening, fun, and faithful to the Aliens franchise. Now, according to the rumor mill, a sequel is already being planned, and may even start production this year.

In next month's issue of Official PlayStation Magazine, it's claimed that the studio may be starting up a new Alien game. "Our sources tell us that after work is finished on Halo Wars 2, a new Alien game may start development over at Alien Isolation dev Creative Assembly," writes the magazine.

Additionally, the West-Sussex based developer has recently expanded its operations with the acquisition of the shuttered Crytek Black Sea studio in light of its work on the Total War series.

In an interview with AVP Galaxy some time ago, Game Designer Gary Napprethe said "The plot for a sequel is a daily topic in the studio sometimes. People have their own ideas for where it should go, our writers have some solid concepts and yes, we do have a great opportunity to continue her story."

I sure hope so. I was waiting for ANY form of DLC to continue from that massive cliffhanger at the end while the game got one survival mappack after another.
Guess it's going to be a full on sequel instead.

I am pleased with this, although I worry Sega might try something to try and generate sales growth for the sequel.

Horror games sell quite modestly compared to other genres, even very good ones, I really hope Sega don't repeat the mistakes of Capcom and EA chasing bigger numbers.

Also, official VR support this time, it'll keep dry cleaners busy for months.

im really looking forward to a sequel and seeing where it goes. i wont be buying the seasons pass learnt my lesson the first time with the silly survivor maps.

wonder if they will bring back the atmosphere that kept me limited to a few hours play at a time

Haven't played Isolation yet but...

"Squeeee!"

Yes, no-one can hear you scream in space, but they can hear you squee.

Now this screams that they intend to go full Alien movies with these games. -_- I dunno, I found Alien: Isolation kinda meh to be honest. It was another horror game where you got chased by unbeatable monster until story events either barred it or eventually removed it completely from gameplay except the difference being it was themed around the Alien's movies whilst using them as it's story background. It kinda fell apart though when the Alien's AI started to bug out and it did stupid things like continuously running into a table, seeing you straight on but continues to act like you're not there or teleporting to and dragging you out of lockers that are three rooms away from it.

Alien: Isolation was good for what it was and definitely better than marines and AvP in terms of tone, gameplay and execution but I don't know if it's story really needs a sequel.

I mean the whole point of the game was getting closure which she did... oh and avoiding some aliens.

Not getting my hopes up.

If it does come out, I don't want it to continue the story of Amanda. I'd rather they just reboot Alien in video game form and come up with their own Ellen Ripley. I mean, most movie adaptations don't tie into the source material, they build their stories from scratch. But if it has to be a sequel, I'd like something after Aliens, with an original protagonist.

It would take Konami levels of incompetence to not see the potential sales of a sequel. Don't foul up the game and print money. This is an easy one, just dedicate appropriate development time and trust that it will pay off.

It was published by Sega, not Konami. Sega and Creative Assembly make more money with their RTS games. They feel safer doing that. Alien: Isolation didn't sell as well as they hoped.

if they keep it like that, i will get it. very rarely that a game scared me. not even amnesia could scare me one bit. i was rather bored out of my mind. but isolation, now this had me going since you never knew when and where it will appear.

Sequels of established 'good games' may stand a better chance for higher sales, it doesn't have the disadvantage of people hesitating after Colonial Marines and the original material has a wide fanbase. Who knows, with creative marketing, it could be a big one for them. At the very least, profitable even if it doesn't match expectations.

*shrugs*

Compared to new IP ideas getting their shot at a sequel, this seems a lot more solid but that's just my interpretation.

Glad to hear it, as that ending--while true to Alien-style story--was very clearly sequel bait. I would not mind continuing the story, although I'm not sure how they would do it.

Perhaps, and I know this is probably a bad idea, but perhaps these guys would maybe give us a Colonial Marines game the way it's supposed to be as well. Yeah, you've got your machine gun now, but what if it took entire clips to kill one Xeno? Then you won't be ramboing it, you'll be running and only fighting when you have no choice.
Or keep the single, helpless survivor aspect going. Either way works.

I still want the first to be available in Japan on PC. Apparently it's not available here at all. I would need to import disks from either the US or Europe which looks expensive.

From what I understand, Alien: Isolation missed its' sales projection by a large margin and was on the verge of not breaking even. As a fan I desperately want the sequel, because A:I was one of the best games of 2014 and perhaps the best horror game I ever played. But if someone asked me to invest in the sequel? Yeah, not so sure about that. Maybe a sequel will sell better, riding on the great word of mouth of A:I and with some distance in time from A:CM, but it is not a given. Horror games are in a tough spot in the modern market, with a dedicated niche audience but almost no appeal to anyone outside of that core.

EDIT: Eurogamer seems to think that the rumor is false.

Having recently completed the first one, am curious to see where they decide to go from there. The sound design was superb through headphones. Especially near the end with impressive, for lack of a better phrase; space noises.
They could do well to change up the formula a little, lest it be 'more of the same' and the ending run got ridiculous with how many times it teased you with escape, only to pull it away from you or drag you into another room like a cat playing with a frightened baby mouse. Am almost certain they could've broke a world record with how often they pulled that shit.
Nevertheless, am still interested.

Lets just hope they don't try and release it simultaneously with the next Alien movie. Shadow of Mordor was great, but it could have been so much better if they hadn't rushed the ending to get it out in time for The Hobbit. And we all know what happened with Star Wars: Battlefield.
