Nintendo Announces SNES Classic for This Fall, Has 21 Games ![]() Nintendo is going back to the nostalgia well this fall with the SNES Classic Edition, with 21 games, including the never-released Star Fox 2. It was rumored back in April that Nintendo was working on a new throwback console in the wake of its cancellation of the NES Classic. Of course, it was said to be the SNES Classic. Well, that rumor is spot on, as Nintendo has announced the SNES Classic Edition will be launching in late September. Doug Bowser (still the best name for a Nintendo executive in history), Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, said of the new unit, "While many people from around the world consider the Super NES to be one of the greatest video game systems ever made, many of our younger fans never had a chance to play it. With the Super NES Classic Edition, new fans will be introduced to some of the best Nintendo games of all time, while longtime fans can relive some of their favorite retro classics with family and friends." The retro console will include 21 games (listed below), the HDMI cable to hook it up to your TV, a charging cable, and two SNES controllers. Here's the game list:
If you're looking at that list and thinking that I made a mistake because I listed the never-released Star Fox 2 on there, I didn't. Nintendo says in the press release of the game, "Even for super fans who have played all of these games multiple times, the inclusion of the never-before-released Star Fox 2 game will offer them something entirely new to enjoy - if they can unlock it by proving their skills in the original Star Fox game. (Well, they only have to complete the first level - we didn't want to make it too hard!)" The SNES Classic will release on September 29, and will cost $80. Nintendo hasn't said if it plans to make more units this time around the nostalgia block, but if you want one, I'd advise getting it early. ![]()
Star Fox 2? Really? ...Now Im interested.
Given, I may use my PSP as a SNES machine, but I just can't let this go by. It doesn't run a few games very well, so this seems to be a cool thing to own. Especially Star Fox and the apparently legendary Star Fox 2. I'll just continue playing Chrono Trigger on the PSP.
....eh? Not a terrible lineup, but there's quite a few games from my childhood missing. There's No FF IV and VI, no UN Squadron, no Super Mario All Stars, no Turtles in Time, only the first Donkey Kong Country, and I didn't play this one on the SNES, but there's no effing Chrono Trigger. Still, some pretty good games. Legend of the Seven Stars was the freaking best, as is Super Metroid. I'd give this slightly above average overall. Not bad, but I'm not exactly rushing to get it.
They are missing so much that its not funny. I mean I am most surprised Chrono Trigger is not in this list.
Now I want an N64 Classic & a Game Cube Classic!
Final Fantasy 6 is there in the form of 3. They released 6 in the US as 3 because the US never got the original 2,3, and 5.
Are you 100% sure that that is Final Fantasy 3 as released on the American SNES? Because this is a pretty universal thing, not just for America, and using that old outdated name when no one calls it that anymore is, pardon my French, the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard in my life.
This is the real Final Fantasy 3: This is the Final Fantasy 3 that was relased in the SNES in the West:
...That wasn't what I asked. I asked if you knew for certain that this was FF III as it was known back in the 90s, because they haven't been using that outdated name for awhile. Because if they have gone back to it, that's fucking stupid.
I am certain, because the Original Real Final Fantasy 3 as I showed above never had an SNES remake or any 16 bit remake at all. Only that 3D remake that they did for the DS and onwards.
Well then, whoever decided that was a good name to use was a fucking moron.
And they will release a total of five of them, then discontinue it again!
Calling it now: they'll release 5-6 of the damn things, sales will not be up to Nintendo's standards and because of that, they'll go "guess nobody wants a new Star Fox or cares about the SNES." And will focus on selling NES only stuff and Star Fox is put in the basement with Kid Icarus and friends.
That's a good line up, all good games. It shows how good the SNES was for games where I could probably come up with another 21 good games beyond that. That being said it's directly in my nostalgia zone so that may be the rose tinted Glasses talking.
I think I will actually try to buy this. I missed out on the SNES, and actually havent played most of those games. People complaining about it "missing games" well, I mean, its $80, not way more. Im sure the VC cost of all those games together is more than $80. Plus again...Star Fox 2, a game never before released.
Not gonna lie, I'm seriously considering getting one of these, provided I can actually get my hands on one. SNES titles have generally aged far better than NES ones, and, while there's a smaller lineup this time around, it's still a damn impressive one. Plus, we'll finally be able to play a finished version of Star Fox 2. I just wish Donkey Kong Country 2 and Chrono Trigger were included. Also, they'd better make the controller cables longer than two feet this time around. Having said that, it's probably a moot point given that Nintendo won't make enough units to meet demand, and I'm not going to pay hundreds more to get it from scalpers.
Tempting, yes. Very much so. But here's the thing, will they properly stock the bloody thing this time and not have another shortage again? Because I have a feeling that's gonna happen again since Nintendo clearly hates money and doesn't know how to properly supply things.
Oh, I remember when those news were posted. In particular I remember that I speculated on what titles we could expect on the machine. Let's see if I was off the mark.
I guessed around half the titles would be from Nintendo. By my count 2/3 are from Nintendo, so my guess was incorrect.
So the NES gets 30 out of 712 and the SNES get's 21 out of 783? kinda weird but okay. My biggest question: HOW LONG WILL THE CONTROLLER CABLES BE???
I never realised that the The American version of the SNES was so ugly
This has me excited. Will it get an EU release? How will you do secret of mana 3 player?
Hmm... yeah, ok, I'm interested. Although the price is pretty high and it could use FF2 and Breath of Fire 2, but as it is, that is a pretty solid group of games.
Oh goodie. Another system they will produce in absurdkly limited quantities and then cancel production off.
No Donkey Kong, although Star Fox 2 made it. Too bad they will probably limit production again.
If they made it so there was a large catalogue of games and you could download the 21 games you wanted I probably would get one but seeing as the games it comes with I either have already or aren't that fussed about I'll probably give it a miss
Its a nostalgia collection, they use the names associated with that system an timeframe. Noticably they didn't list Earthbound as Mother 2 or Secret of Mana as Seiken Densetsu 2 either. Also Final Fantasy 3 (Japan) was NES/Famicom title, not on the Super variants.
Probably the same way you did in the 90's.
Sums up my thoughts. I'm just surprised we're getting Kirby's Dream Course. I always felt that game was criminally underrated.
Donkey Kong Country is listed as one of the games.
In fairness, there were thousands of SNES games and hundreds of really good ones. There would be a long list of missing classics no matter what.
Ill buy 10 and sell the for 300% markup like everyone else......gotta love capitalism
I will quote The Grand Tour, by way of comment: "I have launch control." "I don't care."
No Chrono Trigger No Smash TV I wouldn't buy that for a dollar.
Not enough games for my money. And why does it look so damn weird?
Question: Is this the Super Mario World from the All Stars version with the unique Luigi sprite? Cuz I want that one.
