UPDATED - Bioshock 2 Rumors Debunked

More details about the upcoming Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams have surfaced thanks to the upcoming issue of Game Informer, including: two-player co-op, a surprising lack of Big Daddies, and the identity of the protagonist - oh, and Russians.

Game Informer subscription holders have been posting the article details in a thread on the 2K Games forum - and predictably, the news is being met with equal parts suspicion and dismay that Bioshock 2 will not be exactly the same as Bioshock.

Of course, to be fair, some of the changes are pretty massive. Here's what we know thus far, if the reports are to be believed: Sea of Dreams takes place seven years after the end of the first game, putting players in the shoes of private investigator Jack Abbott. When Abbott's daughter is snatched from his New York beach house by the Big Sister - the game's primary antagonist - Abbott gives chase, getting his boat wrecked and finding himself in Rapture.

Abbott won't be the only person in Rapture this time around, either - according to the article, the underwater city has been discovered by none other than the Soviets, who hope to use Plasmid technology to gain an edge over the Americans in the Cold War. Abbott will also encounter genetically spliced animals - a mutated rhinoceros in the Rapture zoo as well as an underwater boss fight against a giant squid.

Perhaps most perplexing is the apparent disappearance of the first game's iconic Big Daddies. If reports are to be believed, there's only one Big Sister in the entire game, which would leave the shattered city of Rapture rather Mr-and-Mrs. Bubbles-less. Of course, this doesn't mean 2K couldn't be keeping a surprise reveal up their sleeves...

We'll know for sure whether these reports are accurate (and considering they seem to be verified by multiple sources, that's probably the case) shortly once we get our hands on the issue of Game Informer in question.

UPDATE: 2K community manager Elizabeth has debunked said rumors in a post on the forums. Guess we'll learn all about Sea of Dreams for real when the actual issue hits shelves. One can't help but wonder if the multiple-source reporting was a case of a coordinated hoax, or just the spread of memetic information across the gamersphere?

So the rumors that Bioshock 2 will feature Soviets isn't a joke....?

Hmmm I hope they can make this idea work...without any other info, Soviets in Rapture makes it seem like it was a homage to the Vodka the makers were drinking as they wrote the plot down

Hmmm...collectivists in an Objectivist underwater city, what could go wrong?

In some ways I'm disappointed, but in other ways, this is some of the best game-related news this year. I will miss the Daddies and Rosies, it won't be the same without them. But a new plot, hoo-fuckin-ray! I love it when they can do sequels on the concept, not the character. The protagonist and his reasons for being in Rapture sound plausible enough, the addition of Red Army soldiers would add more of a "shooter" aspect to this FPS, and the hint that we may actually get to play "outside", or at least, see some sea life.

Keep this game DRM free, and not require Steam (odd request for a Steampunk game I know, but I mean Valve's crap loader, not vaporized water), and this will be the first new PC game I've purchased since Crysis.

Spliced animals?

:O

WOAH this sounds good!

Although I still think a prequel would have been better.

This is starting to sound much better than the prequal idea, i love the new website too.
Leaving the Big daddies out was a good idea too, around half way though bioshock they no longer seemed to matter, you would carefully prepare for your fight and then win first time.
And from a story stand point they arent needed either.

Well that throws a wrench into the works. Should be interesting to see what kind of a dynamic the Soviets have in relation to the main character and to the world they're in.

I like it. Maintain the family themes from the first game, stick with Levine's patented "Two dueling political ideologies" that drives all of his work, and gimme some co-op. Sounds like a winner to me.

Well this news both excites me and makes me rather skeptical. Some of the new elements to it sound like they are good but everything does when written on paper. No more big daddies makes me sad but I can understand why they would do that plus the big sister looks sick! Hope to hear more about this soon...

Also, that picture looks like a Big Daddy Sackboy! Ha!

Maybe Stalin Vs The Martians made the devs go back and reskin some splicers overnight :P

Thinking about it outside forces adapting to Life in Rapture and changing some areas (If that is indeed their intention) sounds very interesting

Just wait until the final BIG STALIN ON A SQUID BATTLE

I will be pissed off if they leave big daddies out all together, they helped give the original a great deal of its charm.

I think co-op for bioshock is the best idea they have come up with so far. As for soviets, I guess we will see how well the story goes when it comes out.

One thing I'm hoping for in this game is for it to demonstrate the gradual effects of ADAM on people. By the sounds of it, Abbot shouldn't have been exposed to it before so his growing dependence could be incorporated into the gameplay. Perhaps a section where he can't find any and nearly becomes a splicer at some point too.

Not too sure about the co-op mode though.

So we've gone from, "Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?" to HAI GUYZ LOOK MUTANT ZOO LOL

My hopes fade.

the plot really really sounds good to me, should be as unique as the first :D

Sounds good to me actually,

Probably won't be as brilliant as the first one, but it sounds like a good story and I'll be all over this.

I wonder if the big sister will be Tennenbaum

come on man. spoiler alert it...

VEPEROD MORSKIA PEXOTA! SCMERT JACK ABBOTT! DA ZDRASVOOYET BOENNO MORSKOE FLOT! URAHHHHH!!!!

Sorry, I really like the Soviets. I study the Soviet Navy quite a bit. So, now I'm doubly interested in this game.

Good point. Done.

So wait, if there is only going to be one little sister that means no adem!!! Which means no, well we all know what that means // I loved the art style of the first game so since it is set only 7 years later it wont have changed much // I just hope they wont get rid of the creepy statue splicers, they where always fun

-M

Damn, no more Big Daddy fights. I'm going to miss watching them duke it out.

Bioshock drew you into the game with questions about Personal Freedom and Responsibility and now you're just going to gun down Soviet military? Way to rape Bioshock's corpse.

In Soviet Union, plasmid splices you! *shame* Sorry, someone had to.

Anyways, I don't particularly mind the absence of Big Daddies, as they weren't what I liked most about Bioshock. If they make #2 as thematically interesting as the first one, I'll be happy with it.

Don't be quick to judge it is still likely to pose such questions in Bioshock just from the Soviets point of View.

This sounds like they are taking the human element out of the game. Bioshock was good because you felt for the character and you can see how far Rapture fell. When you going to fight spliced animals its not going to be the same.

No more Mr Bubbles? :'(

Still looking forward to the game more than any other though.

Yeah. Hopefully they can make it work.

But I'm so fucking sick of Russians/Nazis being like the only enemy in 90% of the games. What the fuck people? Make something up yourself, yeeeesh.

And I hope that they'll at least have something to replace Big Daddies. Something big, metallic and awesome.

Normally, I would agree, but this choice totally fits within the plot of the first game. Rapture was a haven against the Cold War commies and the capitalist Americans.

Steampunk WhaleTanks? Giant humpback whales with armor plating and a turret on their backs...

It makes sense. Now that they have critiqued free market capitalism, it makes sense the communism would be the next target.

What confuses me is how people are just 'discovering' Rapture.

Surely in it's construction a media buzz would have ensued what with construction companies building underwater and whatnot.
And also it looked, from splicer deaths alone, like Rapture used to be quite heavily populated. How could people get there if it was a secret at all?

Maybe the Soviets will be going around trying to 'collectivize' the ADAM away from the splicers.

Here is the important question: Is Ken Levine still lead writer / creative director? Further, are 2k marin and 2k boston still intact as the team behind it?

If anyone could shed some light on that, I would be grateful.

interesting. hope the story will be as good as the first game was. having no big daddies maks sense as you kill a hell of a lot of them in the first game and they isnt an indefinate supply i suppose

I might not know that much about the story, since I've only played Bioshock at friends' place and read it's wiki pages throughout, a while ago, however. =p

But I think there was some kind of secret organization of the wealthiest and most powerful. The whole building process still seems rather unlikely though. Even if they silenced the builders, all the resources they would have to have to build an underwater city would be obvious.

Oh, and isn't the only entrance to Rapture by a bathysphere that's hidden on that island where the lighthouse was?
