StarCraft: Remastered Has a Release Date and a Price

Blizzard has announced the official release date for StarCraft: Remastered, as well as the pricing, which might surprise you.

Blizzard confirmed back in March that it was, as rumored, working on a remaster of StarCraft. Now Blizzard has revealed to last two things everyone was waiting to hear: the remaster's release date and price.

The new version of the game, which will sport 4K graphics, improved audio, redone mission intros, and support for Blizzard friends and matchmaking, is now available for pre-order. Pre-ordering will net you a few bonuses, including three unique building skins - the Char Hive, the Command Center, and the Aiur Nexus. You'll also get some digital bonuses that include the Alexei Stukov co-op Commander and three unique portraits.

Don't forget that StarCraft: Remastered is fully compatible with the original version of StarCraft, which you can now play for free.

StarCraft: Remastered will launch on August 14, 2017, and will run you $14.99. If you want to pre-order, you can do that now over at the Blizzard shop.

Hard pass. I enjoy SC2 enough as it is, especially Co-Op mode.

T-the campaign modes, tho!

Fifteen bucks is... ugh. Fine.

As crazy as it sounds, I might get into the multiplayer with this one. I've played quite a bit of Starcraft 2, and it just wasn't nostalgic enough.

Of course everyone's gonna kick my ass but that always happens in matchmaking systems unless you're top tier.

Also humans are hard programmed to be much more likely to remember and be affected by our losses instead of our wins, by almost a 5 to 1 ratio. So if you have a close to 50% win rate it's going to feel like you're losing all your games, even though that's untrue. Thanks Biology!

Now if they re-made the campaigns in Starcraft 2, that I'd buy.

I heard they aren't changing the gameplay at all. If stacks still can't be larger than 8 or whatever, no sale, ever.

Yeah. It wouldn't even have to be any more updated than LotV. Same goes with a remake.... Alright, I'd rather buy a remake than a remaster. The art of the older games isn't varied enough for me to varant a buy just to see the same things high-res.

I concur with all of this. Just remake the campaign in SC2 itself in a sort of "mission pack". They could even keep the 10-15$ price range, and I'd be more interested.

There are mods that have pretty much done this.

This was going to be my question too, can we get stacks greater than 8?

Nothing is changing in gameplay at all. So much so that gameplay is compatible between the original and the remake. Most of the fanbase of BW would not even touch it if they changed even a single iota of the gameplay. It is a very fragile house of cards that would fall apart if anything was changed.

Also, you can select 12 units in BW. You can't multi-select structures. No smart casting, etc.

As wizzy said, a group of enterprising modders have already basically recreated the entirety of Starcraft and Brood War (with working cutscenes) in Starcraft II. It's called Mass Recall.

I will play it.

I just hope that even if they don't change the gameplay, they do improve pathing so Goliaths and Dragoons can go where you tell them, instead of wandering all over the map when you try to tell them to move a few spaces away.

They're not. I think the only change they're making is a glitch that prevented the Valkyrie from firing in certain situations (or something like that - barely used Valkyries anyway).

$15 is actually not that awful of a price. I was expecting them to go much higher with it, but it looks like someone with some brains set the price-point this time. Also, their complete release of the original for free is a move I don't feel they get enough props for.

I mean, I get where you come from, but just that simple change alone for force them to redo the game entirely, because those limitations helped determine balance against the A.I. (even though they had no such limitations).

And I kind of doubt that they remade the entire game to balance out things like expanded stacks, although that would be nice, and is what I hope they do with the WCIII remake in the works.

In the end, just be glad that this isn't Warcraft 1. ;) Nostalgia can only go so far, and those stacks are enough to make you pull your hair out, no matter how much you remember loving that game.

I can understand why Blizzard would be reluctant to make changes in multiplayer, but I'm less inclined to believe that argument when it comes to singleplayer.

In a way, I'd actually prefer remakes of WC1/2 and Diablo 1, since you can't get them legally now, whereas SC1/D2/WC3 can still be downloaded from battle.net. Admittedly there's no real incentive for Blizzard to do that - no-one's asking for a WC1 remake, and any re-release of WC1 might as well be free given how archaic it is. Still, there is the argument of posterity, and I think there's still fun to be had in WC1 and D2.

And come to think of it, how come Lost Vikings 1 is available for download, but not 2? Rights issues?
