Sony confirms Playstation 5 coming in Holiday 2020.

https://twitter.com/PlayStation/status/1181544095950368768?s=19

All I can say is that this better be backwards compatible with PS4 games at least.

I remember hearing those rumors that not only will you be able to play your PS4 discs on it, but also PS1,2, and 3 discs as well.

AKA; the half-assed buggy prototype will be available for extra high price at the 2020 skin cancer festival, but patient and occasionally wise people should wait till a year or two later when everything's ironed out and it's far cheaper. Anyone who still feels the pull of FOMO, kill it...kill it fcking dead mate, it's a shallow thing only being used against you for shallow ends. Unless you have terminal illness, then embrace that shit real tight I spose.

Title pretty much says it all. Sony has posted an official announcement on its blog for when its new console, imaginatively named the PlayStation 5, will be released and it's holiday season 2020.

Wired has also posted an exclusive interview providing some details on a few of the new hardware features.

I suppose Microsoft might not be far behind with its own next-gen announcement.

edit: whoopsie, Samten8do beat me to it. Would a mod kindly merge the threads or something?

Bollocks, you beat me to it. Now I feel like a right tosser. You better be happy.

The Fuck is this post?

Just commenting on here before scampering off so you don't feel as bad about being a second too late ;) :p

They're a bit light on the details...

Honestly... do we need it? Current PS4 game looks pretty good, is a graphic update really going to be noticeable? The SSD will be nice, but otherwise... meh

You shouldn't believe or put stock in rumors.

The only thing that we can credibly say at this point is that the PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS4 software, anything older than that is pure wishful thinking.

https://www.wired.com/story/exclusive-sony-next-gen-console/

For example, the next-gen console will still accept physical media; it won't be a download-only machine. Because it's based in part on the PS4's architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console.

There's a little bit more detail here, tho still not a deluge.

4k graphics, 60+ FPS, I mean we can technically go beyond what is capable of PS4.

Apparently this new console will have super fast loading. If true, think of all the games that don't have to design their levels around the game needing time to load itself in. The recent God of War had a bunch of that, with slow climbing, squeeze-throughs, boulder gates etc. If the new console is that fast with loading, developers could avoid most of that shit.

The way I think of it is, people said the same thing of the PS4, but I know now after using it and playing its games for a few years that it's rough going back to the 3.

Pretty cool. The most exciting thing for me is that mass reduction in load times. Hope it's not just marketing speak. Also yaay for BC as I would hate a classic like Bloodborne to be relegated to obsolete hardware. Do wonder how far they can push graphics though before it becomes too cost intensive. Companies like Rockstar and Rocksteady already just released one game this gen. Disagree about the criticism of PS4 having 'bare bones' UI. It's simple and clean and I really wouldn't like it to be cluttered with garbage.

Cool, can't wait until Holiday 2021 when the system sellers are out.

Sorry, it might be worth blocking me as am not so good at making sense lately, with a bad habit of bringing others down, and am not sure it's going to get any better from now on. I'd advise others to do the same if they haven't already. I really shouldn't be posting here or anywhere else online as it is.

But why though?

This is not surprising in the slightest. I honestly doubt that I'll buy one at launch, I'll do what I usually do and wait a few years when it has games I want to play. Something like a Horizon: Zero Dawn sequel should be enough, but I doubt that is going to happen.

As in, for launch or at all? Horizon: Zero Dawn had pretty much a cliff hanger ending, I'm sure they're hard at work making a sequel for it.

This. Plus I never buy a console at launch. And even then after 2 or 3 years, a console can still mess up.

Pretty much.

Also which holiday? and Why are Americans allergic to actual dates?

So, Ghost of Tsushima probably will be a swan song then. Last of Us 2 early in the year, Ghost out in May-August shortly before the new system comes out.

I jumped on the PS4 a bit too early, I'll probably wait a spell for some new games to come out.

Oh wow, I've phrased that really badly. I meant that I doubt a Horizon: Zero Dawn sequel is likely to be a launch title for PS5.

Standard procedure: let early adopters do their hamster thing, then jump a couple of years in once the system's ironed out, the price tag goes down and there's a good library for it. I have a hefty backlog for my PS4 anyway.

Did it though? I only played it this year and I recall it ended pretty conclusively. Like I'm sure they can just whip out another one if they wanna but nothing about the story was screaming TO BE CONTINUED.

I thought it was a good post. I agree, wait until they come out with the Ps5 slim or whatever they call the second version.

Eh... It'll be probably like 2 years until there's a must-play game on it anyway. Just look at the start of this gen when every game released on both current and last gen systems. Also, the PS4 ain't close to the piece of shit the PS3/360 were so next-gen early releases shouldn't be massive downgrades on the PS4 like it was for PS3; the PS3 only had 512 MEGABYTEs of RAM.

I'm sure it'll be PS4 backward compatible since it's x86 architecture. PS3 is HIGHLY doubtful, I don't even think there's a solid emulator for PS3 yet, that architecture is hard has hell to emulate and PS5 ain't gonna be more powerful than today's PCs.

It ended conclusively but I recall there was like a post-credits scene setting up a potential sequel of course.

The story didn't, but the sales and critical reception did. Sony is not going to invest that much time and money in a new AAA IP that ends up being very successful and go 'You know what, once is enough'. Plus, the game lends itself well for expansion: New areas to visit, new tribes to interact with, new robot dinosaurs to fight.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that. I guess the scene was that bland.
I don't know if I'd call that a cliffhanger... to me that suggests a shocking revelation and/or a sudden plot complication. This is more of a sequel hook. Sort of just stamped there before delivery for good luck.

Well, that means they're going to be announcing some exclusives at E3. And I have to say, unless they blow my socks off, I'll probably be a late adopter on this one.

This is the only sequel I'm really hoping for and would get a bundle for. Well, maybe besides the next God of War, and another Horizon: Zero Dawn if it's going to have some significantly new ideas. Like how about developing or converting your own fleet of dinobots that can do all that pesky harvesting and crafting for you, and secure new territory by scanning and fighting off corrupted enemy groups and bandit camps? I'd also love being able to ride a Thunderjaw please.

Isn't it obvious? They naturally mean Whitsun.
