PS4 is now the second best selling console of all time

Next to the PS2.

Not bad, but I wonder how close it will get since it still should have about four years left in its life cycle going by past generations' trends.

It deserves it. I can't think of a system in recent memory that had a better pool of raw gaming experiences, both exclusives and thrid party games. Well...I guess since the Ps2 actually.

It's nice to see Sony bounce back off the disappointing Ps3 which fell behind the Xbox 360.

Though I will admit as fun as it is to mock about the Xbox One, it's a shame that Microsoft just shit their pants this generation. I have no fucking clue what happened with them.

Nintendo is off in NintendoLand as usual. But at least the Switch is shaping up to be a solid system one generation behind as per usual for Nintendo.

I'm just here to see how the Nintendo folk 2 people try to spin this as a failure.

PS3 outsold the 360, just not for the first 3/4ths of its lifetime. It caught up and surpassed it near the end. People just remember the first few years of it where it was getting crushed and assume it kept going that way.

Yup. In terms of home consoles, the PS3 ranks as the 5th best-selling one, surpassed only by every other PlayStation console (#1 PS2, #2 PS4, #3 PS1) and the Wii in the 4th spot.

I'm not going to touch that, I just wanted to note how weird it is that Nintendo has less censorship than Sony right now. I am genuinely curious as to the sales figures for games available on both consoles.

I figure if somebody has both consoles, they'll pick up the Switch version.
That's what I do, and I don't give a fig about how many underage pantyshots they remove. That said, given the sales numbers for the type of games people cry "censorship" over, Sony's not out a heck of a lot.

One person is folk now?

Having three out of four home consoles sell over a hundred million units, they must be doing something right, good on them.

Although the PS4 being somewhat on the same track as the PS2 is impressive on its own, what's more impressive is that the price point of the PS4 has been quite a bit higher than the PS2's during its lifetime.

Around its sixth anniversary, you could pick up a PS2 for around $130, making it almost eligible for being called an impulse purchase.
The PS4 is rolling towards its sixth anniversary and it will still cost you around $300 when it's not on sale.

And that is with the Xbox360's 1 year head start in terms of sales, go figure.

You ain't the only one. I mentioned this in a thread months ago, but arrogant Sony is back again. Though an arrogant Nintendo, Microsoft, or whoever in the gaming industry is also bad for everyone.

With that said, the sales figures don't surprise me.

Good point. The cheapest PS4 I've ever seen was $230-$240, and that was due to being either refurbished or pre-owned. Odds are Sony knows this, because people are willing to pay any price. The same applies to Microsoft.

dunno about Sony and MS software sales but Nintendo seems to be doing pretty good with both hardware sales and software sales right now.

Yeah the only reason I got an Xbox over a ps4 was because it's what my friends have, and that's become a running joke about the system this gen. It was obvious early on that ps4 was going to have a better exclusive library.

It will be intresting to see if Sony's hubris strikes again like it did last gen, Microsoft seems to be getting serious about offering actual competition. I hope next gen is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to exclusives on either console.

Yes, but one - only one - truly seeks it out.

I'm sorry, I really don't know how big of a deal this is.

I mean, the competition wasn't even there this cycle.

Xbox One forfeited the title BEFORE we even got our hands on the system. As cool as Phil Spencer appears, they didn't have a game changing moment until Xbox Game Pass announced it would have First Party Games for the first time on Jan 2018. Before that, Game Pass was just a bad way of trying to appear like they had backwards compatibility than they did. That was a year ago that Xbox did something that really brought any kind of value to the Xbox.

They had almost zero first party games, there's no vr, there were no exclusive deals like with Street Fighter 5. There was absolutely no reason to pick an Xbox over a PS4 other than brand loyalty.

If this happened in a world where Xbox was dropping as many hits and features as ps4? Yeah, we have something to discuss. But we're at a time that video games are no longer just for amusement. The average person can make money off of this. And you need to be where all of the hits will be. And that's just been the PS4.

Sea of Thieves? Well, you all have computers, don't you? :)

And add to the fact that the PS5 is supposed to have actual backwards compatibility, I see sales falling off soon, if not already.

PS5 will get you the new shinies and you can play the old shinies as well.

I'm wondering what kind of tech Sony's going to try and corner the market with. What's it's gimmick?

Like, the PS1 was a decent CD player, the PS2 competed with DVD players, the PS3 was downright cheaper than stand alone BluRay players and the PS4 had the advantage of Microsoft completely FUBARing their own product and Nintendo deciding to do its own thing.

I think the big thing for Ps5 is going to be about loading and install times. I read that somewhere. They want 4k/30fps with install times that let you play the game the same day you put the disc into the system.

This is it. People have been messing their pants over the Spiderman load test.

But wait. We got more!

Add to that, the rumors that the PS5 is going to be backwards compatible with at least the PS4, and a wireless vr headseat

All that and specs? Sony has come out swinging.

Oh, cool. The obligatory d*ck measurement contest in the shape of sales figures. How much I miss it. /s

EDIT: Sorry, I still didn't have my coffee this morning.

If this is where the new battlefield lays, I'm happy to see it. I may actually go for a new console this time instead of remaining pc only (even if it hurts so bad to miss out on Bloodborne for so long).

Yahtzee and I don't always see eye to eye but one thing I've always agreed with is the argument that consoles are awesome because they're pick up and play - or used to be at least. I used to hate pcs because of how hard it was back in 3.1 and before to even get a game working, thats why I eventually bought my first playstation. Over time they load and install times grew for consoles, and compatibility bullshit reduced for pcs and there stopped being a good reason to pick a console over a pc. Its nice to see that shift back a bit.

Don't worry.
It's ok when Sony boys do it.

And I still don't have one for my own because I am holding off for the PS5 being Backwards Compatible.

I really want to play Bloodborne though.
