Gaming Hardware/concepts fails of 2010s

 Pages 1 2 NEXT

With Google Stadia failing in a spectacular way, I thought it would be fun to talk about all the failed gaming hardwares of 2010s. This can be anything from a failed gaming console to complimentary piece of hardware that failed as well.

Playstation Move
Remember how Nintendo Wii introducted motion controls with its controls? No one saw anything like this, and I remember everything gravitating towards its concept. Sony and Microsoft thought "Why don't we cash in on this?" And tried their take on motion controls. While Microsoft at least tried to stay original, Sony copied almost 1:1 with Playstation Move. When it first came out, it was known for being more precise than wii, and had high potential.

And that's where we see the big fail with Move; untapped potential. Other than Wii sports-like minigames, Move did not have enough games that supported it. Any game that could be played with Move was much better on dualshock 3.

I guess you could argue that from the ashes of Move rose PSVR, which is the only good thing that came out of it.

Kinect

On yes, we all know about this piece of shit. The idea was noble; no controllers needed, just use your voice command and body motions. But the kinect-required games were mostly for kids, and the games that were made for adults made you look like an jackass. IT first came out for xbox 360, but it was forced on xbox one. "Xbox one won't without kinect!" said certain ex-head of xbox. Kinect on XB1 was supposed to be more precise and powerful than the 360 version, but I don't know if that ever held truth.

Ouya

Some lady thought that the people were moving away from TV gaming (this was near the ned of ps3/xbox360 era, just before xb1/ps4), and made an android-base console. It was also supposed to feature 200 free to try games. That concept went up in smoke, and people found out that the games on ouya were cheap knock offs of mobile games. They project also had various other problems, such as Kickstarter backers not getting priority of getting the console, the controller having the price that of half of the console, and buttons routinely sticking.

Soulja boy console

No words. Just... WTF?

How about the wii U? Maybe wasn't the massive fail that was the Ouya, but definitely a step down from the wii. I heard the switch already outsold the wii U.

Can we throw in occulus/VR yet, or do we need to wait a few more years for that?

Motion control failling wasn't much of a surprise, everyone jump on the bandwagon thinking the wii open the way to a new market, but it was just a gimmick that caught on. Outside of wii sports, nobody really seem to give a crap about the motion control in general.

As you pointed out, at least the Move outlasted them and did something useful. Speaking of the Playstation and Sony, the Playstation Classic . It is by far the worst mini/classic console ever released. You get the PAL region 50hz version for half of the games no matter which region you live in, the game selection is meh, and you only get 20 games.

According to Nintendo's own data from september last year, the Wii U sold ~13.5 million units. Switch was sitting at at least ~41,6 mil, tho holiday sales no doubt increased that. Unless sales just grind to a halt, the Switch will likely overtake the SNES (~49 mil).

So the Wii U didn't just get outsold. It got outsold three times over.

Ouya

Also, they thought this would be a good idea for a commercial:

the Switch also already outsold the Xbox One as well.

pretty sure that makes the Xbox One a failure too.

Here are some other stuff I forgot to add

Xbox Play Anywhere

The idea was nice, but it kinda was counterintuitive to what XB1 needed; exclusivity. Why play a game on weaker console when you could play them on a gaming PC? Not to mention, barely any games on XB1 supported this, and even when they did players were forced to use Microsoft store. And everyone's comfortable with Steam.

Rise of "Free updates"

If the game already comes with some content, I have no problems with this. However, more and more I am seeing this as an excuse to release a game in a bare-bone content state. At least with episodic games, you can kinda expect what to arrive in the future. I honestly think we were better off in the days of season pass and paid dlcs

Aww did someone say mean things about daddy Nintendo? It's a good thing you're here; I don't know how that little corporation worth hundreds of millions of dollars would survive without it's big, strong defender!

Also as of this article from Dec 9, you're simply flat-out wrong. If you have updated numbers, we can talk. Somehow, I doubt the Switch has sold 80 million more units in the past 1.5 months which would actually put it in the same category as how the Switch has tripled Wii U sales though.

Do you know what makes the Wii U a failure and not the Xbone?

The fact that on your own linked page, it doesn't even show the Wii U as being in either current gen or last gen.
The PS Vita is even there!!!!!

did i say the wii u wasn't a failure in this thread?

You asked if the Xbone was. It's not because it's on the chart.

Phoenixmgs:

the PS1, PS2, NES and Game Boy aren't on the chart either. Does that mean those are failures too and xbox one isn't?

that wasn't the point you made in your last reply. now you're just moving goal post's.

The charts show the sales numbers for last-gen and current-gen, why would they have the NES or PS1 on them? Do you not get charts? The fact that the Wii U, definitely either a last-gen or current-gen console, isn't on either chart shows how much it failed.

again, did i ever say the Wii U wasn't a failure?

and how does the Wii U being more of a failure than the Xbox One and PS Vita make the Vita and Xbox One any less of the failures they are?

the Wii isn't a last gen or current gen console.

do you not get how console generations work?

Nintendo obviously doesn't; the Wii is definitely in the PS3/360 gen (aka last-gen), the Wii U could be either current or last, and the Switch is either current-gen or next-gen or a new handheld.

Yoshi178:

God dammit Yoshi, I had an entire post put together to defend you cause this dogpile of an argument this thread has become was stupid, but then you added that second sentence in an edit after I refreshed to make sure I had everything ready and your bias tilted towards the blatantly misguided.

Fuck's sake...

Because finishing 2nd to last is less of a failure than finishing last.....

I literally couldn't care less about sales figures. I've said many times the only thing that matters is if the thing you like sold enough to merit more of it being made. Outside of that sales numbers only show how much money one company made over the other.

I just thought it was funny the Wii U wasn't on any of the charts.

I was gonna, yep, cause a comment or two were tilting towards the excessive and not exactly deserved. But again, you made that edit to your post, and calling the Xbox One a failure is... super fucking stupid and I just... scrapped the whole thing

given that the switch has been on the market for not even half the amount of time that Xbox One has been on the market, the fact that Switch has already outsold the Xbox One, which everyone considered a big success is pretty funny. lol

Yes, but just because the Switch has outsold it, 40 million sales of a console is not the mark of a failure. And I was gonna bring attention to that point cause your initial comment seemed a little bit out of spite for the Xbox One.

But then your edit to your post by saying "and how does the Wii U being more of a failure than the Xbox One and PS Vita make the Vita and Xbox One make them any less of the failures they are?" was just... like... really? Really dude?

I had a little spark of "maybe it wasn't that bad" but then you made it that bad. Hence me getting rid of my initial defence. So... pffbt. Bleh

You know what WAS a failure by comparison? The Wii U, at 13.5 million.

Yeah, never mind, this thread direction was deserved >_> I don't even have a Xbox One, don't exactly have a horse in that race either. Just all became a pissing contest. Was gonna try and back you up a bit but ya screwed that up. I'm out

Damnit Yoshi, why do you keep saying ridiculous things that only make your own team look bad? By that logic, over half of Nintendo's home consoles are failures while Sony is 4 for 4, batting 1.000. Sony always wins, baby!!!

But seriously, I really couldn't care less whether my preferred brand sales more than another. I just couldn't not see the huge logical misstep in a Nintendo fan having the opinion that selling in the 40 millions is a failure.

Elvis Starburst:

You can choose to believe it or not. I did say earlier that a post or two was rather excessive towards you. I intended to point them out and try to redirect the thread direction a little. But it all became a pissing contest between users while I was typing my response and now I'm more or less done with the whole thing

Avnger:

Aww did someone say mean things about daddy Nintendo?

Uhrm, that's an oddly hostile response. It wasn't him that brought up "being outsold by the Switch" as a particular mark of failure; it's valid to point out how that's not really an applicable or reasonable standard.

Can we rip into the XBone's terrible, embarrassing launch instead of having a pointless argument? That sounds much more fun.

Remember how they said they weren't going to allow pre-owned games and then immediately backtracked when everyone told them to fuck off?

Agreed. The most awesome moment in the gaming audience. A giant f.u to anti-consumerism & a lesson no one should forget.

The switch hasn't just "outsold" the Wii U though. The Wii U has had it's total lifetimes sales tripled by all three of the current gen consoles. Hell, one has to go back to 1998 and the Dreamcast (the console that notoriously sunk Sega as a platform manufacturer) to find a home console that sold as poorly. It literally has sales numbers closer to the NES Classic and Super NES Classic ROM-bundle machines than the next highest selling console (the Gamecube which is also acknowledged as having a lackluster performance yet still sold almost twice as many consoles). To compare the Wii U's sales to the Xbone's is laughable at best. One of them (according to Yoshi's link) has sold five million fewer units than the Switch; the other has sold thirty-five million fewer with an extra year of time.
