Gamestop classifies itself as "essential retail" and won't close the stores.

First off, I hope everyone is staying safe amidst the covid-19 outbreak. I really hope this ends soon.

Now on with the main point, and the reason why you click on this discussion; Yes, you read that right. Gamestop is saying games are just as important as stuff like food, medicine, medical supplies, etc.

TL;DR
Yeah games make everyone's lives better at home. If the local authorities come in to shut it down, just show them this document, K THX.

Okay fine, they are greedy mofos trying to advantage of this horrible global pandemic. The least they can do is making the stores safe, right?

Nope, they are making both the customers and the employees very vulnerable to the virus. They supposedly supplied the stores with hand sanitizers and other sanitization supplies, but there are reports of none of them being seen. One of the Gamestop employees actually came up and shed light on what's going on over at Reddit.

The OP in the post pretty much said all there needs to be said; The corporate gives zero fucks about well-beings of the employees, customers, and the general public. All they care is to increase the bottom line.

I thought EA and Bethesda were bad, but I'd say what GameStop is doing is downright criminal

I want to say I'd boycott them over this, but honestly, I haven't stepped foot in one for years(and honestly can't remember the last time I purchased anything at one....at least a decade) so there's not much more I can do at this point.

And yeah, I suspect this "Have the cops call corporate" isn't gonna fly. I doubt any employee really wants to risk arrest over this shit either. If in their shoes, my first inclination if/when the cops showed up to enforce a lockdown, would be "Please, speak to my manager/supervisor".

Though apparently a lot of the Store Managers are also working from home so they can stay safe, but it's okay for their employees to get sick.

glorious capitalism! the UK has an equivalent called GAME that is being just as bad in every single way Gstop indulges in. am mostly certain most of their income is from parents who don't know any better, trying to buy presents, and kids who don't know any better. i avoid those places like the plague as it is. anyway, wasn't Reggie boy supposed to save it or some shit?

The entire executive board should be arrested for this. The employees might as well quit. GameStop won't survive this pandemic, economically. They are barely in business as it is, so the employees are out of a job anyway. At the very least they don't have to risk getting infected and infecting others.

Because of this, I'm not gonna pick up RE3 at GS. I'll just go to Best Buy and pay in full.

Have they actually offered up some kind of justification for why they are essential retail? I mean, I've never been in a Gamestop on account of living in the wrong country, but we have a local equivalent called Game Mania, and I can't for the life of me think why they'd be "essential". Also, ours did close their stores.

What quality of cocaine are these idiots snorting that they think they're essential traders? Was there a nintendo brand pasta or an EA sourced steak section in their stores I'm not aware of?

Of course they're essential. If people couldn't get their Doom and Animal Crossing physical copies today, cuz they can't be assed for getting a digital copy instead, imagine the riots!

If weed retailers can be open in California of all places, so can gamestop lmao.

The day doctors prescribe "videogames" as treatment, I'll agree with you.

Hahaha......NO!

This store is absolutely retarded. And people have been part of the problem for still buying from there. Get your games from Target, Walmart, and Amazon. Community is garbage.

Year for me. I really only went in to get a Pokemon who's code was exclusive to them. I think I spent like a pity $14 on that mini-expansion to Uncharted 4. With Amazon and digital there is legit no reason for me to step in one.

Do these stores dispense medical pot? Pretty sure it's just recreational. You should still be able to get medical pot from a doctor.

They sell Mice, Keyboards and webcams. Thus they help you "work from home" and are thus essential.

If they'd tried to play up the "We're helping people keep sane while shut up in their homes until god knows when" they might have gotten a little more sympathy.

Granted, the fact the managers were working from home, apparently, and the "Do not comply with police shutdown" was apparently ordered via phone call(because emails can be leaked) doesn't help.

I kinda regret not trying to short sell gamestop a week ago now.

>>"Do not comply with police shutdown"

This should sink the company all by it'self.

So far, a majority of the Gamestops in my home state of Michigan have closed their doors for the time being. So apparently, the "DO NOT comply with police/government" did not stick.

Pennsylvania apparently just said "cool, you realize we give you a business licence right. so you don't have that anymore"

My guess is they quickly got cold feet once authorities actually started calling them on their bluff, like in Pennsylvania, where the governor suspended their operating permit. Heard the same thing happened in California and New York.

Gamestop claims they: "closed stores in PA to comply with the state's mandate to ensure the safety of our customers and associates, not because we lost our permit license.".

well it seems like EB Games is currently staying open in Australia with reduced hours.

the OP in this thread is a bit misleading. from what i understand, Gamestop and EB Games reason for calling themselves "essential" retail is because aside from selling games, they also sell work from home type equipment such as webcams, keyboards and audio equipment. which even OP's Kotaku article mentions.

now obviously that isn't the main stuff they sell and a pretty poor reason to call themselves "essential" type retail. but at least they're using that "work from home equipment" angle as their reason for staying open instead of saying that videogames are essential. as we all know they're not.

At the same time i don't believe the Australian Government is being as tight about the lockdown as what Trump is being like with in the USA.

what confuse's me the most is why things like wedcams or even keyboards are even "essential" type equipment in the first place. you don't need latest and greatest tech to be able to work from home. hell i'm on a shitty bottom of the range laptop. and even without webams and audio equipment, you can still message people through things like facebook messenger, skype and e-mail. keyboards for desktop PC's would be the only real thing that is required to work from home, and even then, shitloads of other place's sell keyboards besides EB Games. why is EB so essential?

oh well at least it seems like i'll still get my Persona 5 R and Final Fantasy Remake pre-orders will release on time unless EB Games Australia also gets shut down in the next week just like Gamestop was shutdown in America.

Funny thing about that. I pre-ordered RE3 from JB-Hi Fi. I tried to convert it to a delivery order (I was going to pick it up originally) but they can't, as the order doesn't technically exist yet or something. Right now, I'm just hoping JB stays open long enough for me to pick it up, otherwise, I could miss it.

Only silver lining is that I used a JB gift card that I got for Christmas to cover the cost, so I technically haven't lost the money from my own account if it happens.

at the moment my pre-order list consists of Persona 5 R, Final Fantasy Remake, No More Heroes 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles Definititive edition which are the only things with confirmed 2020 release dates.

will be interesting to see how Nintendo handles announcing release dats in their Next Nintendo Direct which has been rumored to be happening on March 26 (27th in Australia)

gd on mister Pennsylvania for putting foot down with a firm hand into the face of this ugly avarice. nothing quite like a universal crisis for bringing out ppls true colours

Hopefully they burn to the ground.

I haven't been in a Gamestop in Years(for a number of reasons, their treatment of employees being one of the biggies) but from what I remember they sell gaming keyboards and mice and such, not the kind of thing you use for "work from home" and far overpriced for anything but gaming. Not to mention it's a fraction of their stock anyway.

Also, at least as of right now, the US isn't on Lockdown and Trump hasn't issued any orders to that effect. Quite a few US states, particularly the populous ones like California and New York, have issued their own Stay at Home orders but there's no federal lockdown in place.

Partially because it would likely be unenforceable by logistics alone and partially because Trump only cares about this because it's fucking over the economy and his likely reelection chances. He was acting like it would just go away on it's own just a few weeks ago, "like a miracle" and he's already talking about trying to go back to normal in a week or so, like this is suddenly going to be better by then.

Ha! Legal loopholes, the corporations' favorite trick to circumvent the law.

USA has a higher amount of effected people by the virus. but the Australian government is still being extremely cautious at the moment and making us all go into lockdown. so far a few things like supermarkets and take away fast food stores like mcdonalds remain open but that's about it.

i still have to go to work because i work in an outsourced call centre in the debt section for one of government areas so i still have to walk around the street and catch public transport at the moment. at the moment in my debt sectio we're helping people by modifying their payment plans and even going so far as doing payment deferrals for people

just hoping that people obey the lockdown rules so they don't eventually shut down public transport as well.

If you can or if you got the connections get some neutral disinfectant. That stuff works wonders, unless you're century our office already has it. I also recommend 90% alcohol too.

I work at an apartment complex. We're trying to ration gloves & masks, but of my own volition, I decided to get some spare gloves for my co-workers. I was able to get them at a dollar store in my neighborhood. They had a whole bunch. They weren't a buck either. Apparently my supervisors are going to pay me back. I give this advice to everyone else on the thread too. Y'all stay safe and stay clean.

Just got my copy of Persona 5 R.

My EB has released it early because they don't know how long the place will stay open

Might want to call your local store first before going out @Hawki. Have no idea if this is happening at all Australian EB's or not.

As far as which stores they're going to close, it will most likely be the non prestigious stores.

Probably. Even so, they still have another 5500 stores left after that. It's a deep drain with lots of circling left in it. Shit is gonna suck for the decent folks they got working for them.
