In its first trailer, Resident Evil: Raccoon City looks something like SOCOM with added zombie head stomping.
Capcom officially confirmed SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals: Confrontation developer Slant Six's Resident Evil: Raccoon City after details leaked out earlier this week. Along with this confirmation comes Raccoon City's first trailer, a decent look at the title despite a headache-inducing presentation of gameplay scenes inserted between logo flashes.
Resident Evil: Raccoon City is a team-based shooter where players battle through events occurring during Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 solo or in up to 4-player co-op. Unlike previous Resident Evil titles, players take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier, i.e. one of the "bad guys," looking to eliminate all evidence of the T-virus outbreak including all survivors and other forces in the area such as Resident Evil 4's Leon S. Kennedy. Capcom says it'll allow fans to "rewrite the history" of the Raccoon City outbreak.
In addition, Raccoon City will feature various online multiplayer modes with three different sides: the previously mentioned Umbrella Security Services, the United States Special Ops, and a team of zombies/bio-organic weapons (B.O.W's). As far as I can tell, the trailer mostly shows off the single player/co-op mode.
Raccoon City's environments look dark and grungy. There's definitely a SOCOM-ish feeling to some of the gameplay moments, which could be interesting in a Resident Evil title. Excluding Resident Evil 5, players are normally forced to go it alone in the series, and when the ammo and herbs run out you can pretty much get screwed without adequate knife skills. Now we could potentially play with up to 3 other rifle-wielding, herb-carrying friends, which is a nice change.
Resident Evil: Raccoon City hasn't been dated, but it'll be released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
